Butler's agent in search for 1st rounder + big contract

If he wanted security he and his agent would sign Pats offer last offseason. I believe it was reasonable like most Pats offers are. He would have lots of money in the bank now, he would be on the team that made him and put him in the best position to succeed . and he would be in a position to sign another big deal in a few years.

I think he should have. I would have. Yes you leave millions on the table. But the difference between 40 or 50 isn't huge. You still are set for life. Agents do it that way cause they know on the whole you are more likely to make max money waiting even if in the single case here and there your client gets injured before he gets to FA.

How do people feel about the situation: Is it repairable?

With Butler as CB1 we were top 10 in yards and 17.7 PPG as well in both seasons. The defense hadn't performed this well in nearly a decade.

No doubt with Butler/Gilmore at CB that our defense could have their best year since 2003 (maybe even better). Make it work.

You know the thing is we talk about Butler's agent screwing this up. Maybe and maybe not but he won't lose in the end cause it is about supply and demand and the supply of legit #1 CBs is low.
If he makes it to his payday healthy and productive.

If I were the Pats just to end this I would sign him to a 2 year 21M contract.

Be like. "We are going to franchise you after this year, so lets get you paid fairly well now and work it out after 2 years with a contract stipulation we will not franchise you after the 2nd year".

I think he would go for that if put in those terms. It is more secure and paying him 10.5M a year will make him happier than 4M.

I wonder if that is workable. Make 15M of it guaranteed as a sweetener and we have him under a very good contract for 2 years and no bad feelings plus he is paid only 3-4M less than what he is worth and even more than Talib. I think he can play happily under that.

There's no point in doing that. We can have him at $4mill if he wants to play football this year. Why on earth give him $17mill and no tag guarantee the next year, just for the he'll of it?

There's no point in giving up the power of having him for $4mill, unless you're signing him to a long term deal.

Take him on the tender, then franchise him. It's a part of the business. We get another year or two out of him, and/or get compensation for him. He gets his money. Win for both sides.

His agent screwed the pooch. I don't fault Malcolm but that's what he gets for dealing with someone with less experience than him. You learn the business the hard way. I would love it if he could get his money here, but that doesn't seem likely. You don't play hardball in your last year before UFA. The time to make concessions was last year. Give a little to get a little. Right now, the Patriots have no incentive to do anything but get standout play for $4mill.

MB will be ok I'm sure. But what level of ok? The agents job is to get you top dollar as many times as possible. Sometimes it doesn't happen like that (look at Bennett this year). One little mistake in timing or hard-headedness can cost these guys millions. MB could be playing under a decent contract with the Pats for this year and next and cash in again after 2018. Now he may only get one big payday.

uh oh... the "we should franchise Garoppolo" people are NOT going to like that idea.

Butler's being traded folks

Yup. I get if from butlers prospective. Gilmore hasn't played a down for this team and just swooped in and took the $ butler thought he deserved. The saints are a logical landing spot for him and I'm not gonna complain if we land their 1st rounder in return

Why would any player go with an inexperienced agent? Seems to me that's the #1 decision a pro-player needs to make & he's got lots of guys in that locker room, not to mention friends in the league that could recommend top agencies?

I'm okay with waiting him out to signing the tender and risk losing him for nothing. Let's get Lombardi #6. If we don't need the tag for Jimmy we can always tag him next season.

Regardless of how this turns out - even if there is an ugly ending - I am a fan of Butler on the field. His effort & production was key. Not only in the SB vs Seattle, but since.

He might regret his agent's advice. I'm starting to think that he may be overmatched here. And, as much as I enjoy Butler the player, he may not be the most worldly in the league.

An interesting turn for sure.

the fact that BB did not even let Butler play cover 2 on Julio Jones in the SB and then went out and spent 14 million on a new CB tells teams he is not a top 5 CB.

he is on the same level as Logan Ryan a good starting CB and should get 10 million per so he will have a hard time finding a team to give 14 million and a first round pick in one of the deepest Drafts for DB. RB and DT in a long time

Lol good luck. Get the Saints in on this, we'd love their 11th overall pick.
They would probably negotiate our former pick at #32 and a second rounder......

Signing Gilmore and paying him $40m GTD while leaving him out there earning peanuts was always going to create resentment, he's never playing for the Pats at the tender number if he doesn't get traded he'll hold out until mid season until the deadline where he still gets a credited season.

And then he's only one small injury away from being 28 and stuck in the same predicament a year later. Then forcing him to either hold out again the next season, and be around 29 by the time he hits free agency. He will never get a big contact then, not at 29.

He already did screw it. Not screwing it would mean he has a team that is willing to take Butler on his terms before messing with BB like that.

Searching for teams on DAY 4 of FA would suggest some malpractice in evaluations and self-evaluations.

Of course it can still end ok for Butler. Gamblers get lucky too..
