Patriots trade for WR Brandin Cooks (NO BUTLER INVOLVED). Gave up 1st & 3rd rounder for Cooks + 4th

Hi Manx, I'm not as familiar with this upcoming draft as you are, but with our loaded roster now, do you think a 4th, 5th or 6th rounder in this year's draft will be able to make our team or contribute? I'm thinking our top needs would be DL, LB and maybe a lead RB.

They might not make the final 53, but we have to get to 90 men in the first place. But then, how many holes on the 53 are there? None really in the receiving corps or secondary, we can get by with the OL as it's constituted and we're fine on the interior DL. RB, LB and DE and maybe backup SS are really the only positions that it could be argued NEED to be addressed with some urgency but even there, if Hightower and Blount come back, we can put out a comparable 53 to last year.

I will lose my damn mind if the pats trade butler for the 32nd pick in the draft.

I know that's all speculation but there's no ****ing way bill would do that

Looks like the pats are gonna stay home on draft day 1. Lol.

The team has finally gotten legitimate deep speed to replace what they lost when Moss left, and you're *****ing?

For crying out loud.....
but to what end. How much more is he going to "spread the defense" than Hogan did? How many more yards can he add to the 293 Brady already averaged last season, and finally how many more points.

See my post on pg 15, I try to explain it better there (though I'm not sure I did as well as I would have liked)

BTW- not hating on the player just the cost to get him, the cost to maintain his presence beyond 2 years, and the perception he can get the offense to another level.

Well now the thread is on page 11 and likely will be at 15 by the time I finish this post.

I didn't like the trade on page one and like it less now that it is still possible that Butler will be part of it. But even if he ends up here, I still don't like it. Cooks is a luxury we simply don't need, and certainly not at the cost of our top 2 draft picks, and NOT at the eventual cost (after 2 years) he will become.

Think about it this way. With the current WR corps and Gronk missing all but 3 of his games Brady still averaged just over 292 yds per game. Over a 16 game season that projects to over 4700yd for the year. His best year was 5200 and he only approached 5000 yds 2 other times (4800 in 2007, 4770 in 2015). So I ask you exactly how much better is Cooks going to make Brady.

I'm worried that this trade isn't about adding MORE actual yards on offense because for every catch Cooks makes it is more likely he is taking away receptions from someone else rather than adding to the bottom line. When you are at 95% of your best, the room to improve becomes marginal.

So will Cooks make the offense more explosive? Sure. Will he make it harder to defend? It would seem so. But will he add to the real bottom line scoring and more importantly winning games enough to make it worth the 2 players who might have filled needs on the DL or LB.

Sorry, but I guess this will make all the WR lovers happy, but I still see the position as being the most easily replaceable one (outside of FB) on offense. I know we have to get younger at the position and create a succession for DA and Edelman, but in just 2 years when Edelman is likely done, this kid is going to be asking for 16+MM to stick around. That is NOT a great succession plan. This kid is just a binky, only this time it's Bill's binky, so here he is.

About the only thing that makes sense to me right now is trading JG and geting those picks back. If not, then it's a good thing we've "won FA" because we sure as hell not going to win the draft. Also to me at least we really need to re-sign Floyd now because we now need more size on the outside.

So enjoy your celebration. I'll be here still trying to grasp exactly what you are celebrating about.

EDIT: I nailed it, page 15 :D

There is a fine line between success and failure in the NFL. The Texans competed but their QB sucked. Atlanta competed hard but ran out of gas. Those 2 games exposed some limitations that could be exploited next year. This move gives people a whole new set of problems to face against us.

Cooks, Edleman, Hogan, Mitchell, Amendola, not a bad wide receiver unit.....I'm guessing we are not bringing Floyd back now

Want to make it better? After Amendola takes the restructure, look at what they're paying them.

If you add the cap hits for this year of

Edelman
Gronkowski
Cooks
Hogan
and Mitchell

it's about 2 million more than Antonio Brown's APY on his new contract.

Sit back and think about that for a few minutes...

Well, golly gee ..... go figure.

For those who wanted someone who could take the top off opposing defenses, Cooks is that guy; and then some. Few, if any, defense is going to be able to man-up on Cooks. This will be great news for Gronk ... if he can stay healthy to benefit.

Opposing DC's on the Pats schedule are probably going to start having sleepless nights immediately.

In regards to the 4th round pick in return from NO, maybe I'm missing something, but if the Pats know they'll lose a 4th due to the scam gate by the NFL, why wouldn't they ask NO to send over a 5th round pick so they at least get a real pick instead of losing the pick they received?
Because while they lose that pick (#118), they get to keep their own 4th rounder (#137) which would be higher than a New Orleans 5th rounder..(est #150 ish)

We're going Back To Back in my Drake voice! This feels like the 2003 and 2004 seasons all over again! I guess Kraft and BB are like let's go all out for Brady in the golden years of one of the best athletes of all time! Welp if we can resign Hightower and Butler!

But they're NOT going all-out. The guys they're adding, other than Gilmore, are cost-controlled.

Allen = cheap
Cooks = cheap
Ealy = very cheap!

There's no cap hell in the Patriots' future at this point.

I suspect they traded their 32 only because they know they will get something from Browns soon. That's the only thing that makes sense.

Gearing up for Jimmy's game. Hope you guys are ready.

How about for NO's #1?

JE11 is FA after this year and DA is 32.

That is why this trade was made.

Always be a year early and never a year late

Would you lose it if we got the #11 for butler?

I wonder exactly what Atlanta expose. Are you forgetting we put almost 600 yds of offense on them DESPITE sucking in the first half. And all Houston exposed is we might need some OL help. How did this trade help us with that?
