Butler For Cooks Deal Being Hashed Out Between NE-NO

About Cooks:

Has not missed a game the last 2 seasons. Back to back productive years of over 1100 yards. Can play inside and outside. Has pretty good speed but not a true burner. Few players can catch him if he gets behind them though. His quickness and hands are both very solid. Can be a bit soft and wants the ball (he will get it here if he plays in the slot).

Looking at his highlights you see a lot of his outside work but he is very solid in the slot as well. He would come in here and his skill set would work well with Brady. Below are his stats and highlights.

Brandin Cooks

Obviously we can't expect he Brady bump with this guy cause Brees certainly is no slouch. However I will say as much as I like Edelman as this point if Cooks comes here I expect him to be the #1 WR. I know that is a bold statement but on the whole he has more talent than Edelman. Edelman is a bit more quick though.

PS: though I did say he is a bit soft the benefit of that is he keeps himself healthy. So a give and take there.

hate to see Butler go, but Cooks is really, really good.

We're talking about one of the best young CB's in the league and a legit Superbowl hero. This team has another Lombardi in its office right now because of Malcolm Butler. A lot of fans are going to take awhile to digest this news, I know I am.
We are also extremely close to having 1 less Lombardi in the office right now because of offense was completely non-existent for 3 qtrs in this past superbowl.

If the falcons take 3 knees and kick a field goal to go up two scores this whole conversation is different

um, sounds like there's a good chance butler wouldn't sign his tender......so they moved on and signed gillmore

that IS the patriot way, folks.....do what the team needs you to do, or we'll move on.....at this point the patriots wanted butler at his contracted price, and wanted him to sign his tender.....sounds like he and his people didn't like that concept, so next man in

this is exactly what you've been seeing for 15 years now.....shouldn't be a surprise

Do we have a better chance of winning number 6 next year with Gilmore and Butler or over the next two years with Gilmore and Cooks? I guess that's the question.

Butler/Gilmore is the superior duo, but the issue is whether Butler would actually play on that $3.9M RFA tender this upcoming season. Otherwise you'd have to sign him to an equally as big contract as Gilmore. That would involve a ridiculous amount of money invested into the secondary.

Also one other thought. The Pats going after cooks tells me they are convinced they will need to score points and a fair amount to win this year. I think they look at the scheudle and perhaps came to that conclusion that it is unlikely with their D maybe on the whole taking a small step back they will be able to reliably hold some of these good QBs down.

I have a hard time believing he'd hold out the whole season. That really hurts your value

This is stated as speculation based on speculation/rumor from outside sources.

Not sure why this gives the thought any more credence than it already had. It's basically the same as a reply to the original thread started on the rumors.

I'm of the opinion that Belichick doesn't operate with leaks very often. I find it hard to believe this info is getting out. Maybe it's coming from NO's side. But I also find it hard to believe Butler has much leverage here. He has made about $2mill in the NFL to date? That's obviously great money for you and me but not a pro athlete. He's about to double that this year on current terms. I can't imagine he'd sit out and play hard ball when he's a year from being a UFA.

Don't like it....Why do we need more WRs? We need more CBs.

They will improve this defense. Trust me. I am still hoping hightower comes back. This draft will be loaded with pass rushers.

lesson no. 1. Don't fall in love with the veterans

As much as I like Butler, Cooks is not just "some WR"
When i think of great wide outs cooks doesn't come to mind, in fact i didn't know the name. I knew who mike floyd was/is, but cooks ...it didn't ring a bell.

Pats key O players
Gronk - multiple major injuries
JE - multiple injuries and 30
DA role player 32 years old
Lewis 1 year removed from a major injury
Hogan and MM and Allen are still young.

On the D we have a much younger and healthier situation.

Poeple wonder why the pats are looking to add a weapon to the O.

this article is very disingenous. nowhere in it does it state a trade is being "finalized.".

Cooks is a free agent next year i believe, so your going to have to pay him.

Yeah but at this point it feels like a "when" and not "if". I put the over/under at 3pm to make it official.
