Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

The Pats won this trade on paper for sure. I wouldn't be shocked if Allen is as good or even slightly better next year than Bennett was. He is an excellent player, wish him the best.

This is a fantastic move by bb. I think Allen's blocking is better than Bennett and he can be serviceable as a receiver. But he should shine in the red zone as well.

This move virtually assures us of not drafting the clown tight end from Miami that tons of people were mocking to is at #32.

Now we can focus on resigning branch, and drafting two de/olb's,two defensive backs and an ilb with our first five picks.

You had me up to the last paragraph.

BB obviously scouted Allen many moons ago to make this deal. When healthy Allen is as good as they come he works well in the Two TE sets as his TD numbers proves. He's been plagued by the injury bug but so as his QB Andrew Luck. The TE position is very important to the Patriots Offense and if Allen can regain his solid form Brady will let us know. Also we know our Achilles heel at the position one can't be too careful. I don't think the Pats are done at the position because they can still get a decent Rookie later on in the Draft who wont face the immediate pressure to perform.

Considering the interest in Cooks, might there be a pattern here?

I hope he makes an actual article out of this because twitter inherently limits the context you can give on a list like that.

Yes, but still interesting.

Absolutely, I just wanna know more about the context of this. What is the league average among WR/TE ? Where were our players last year ? Where were the playoff teams last year ?

70%+ sounds like a substantial number but I need something to compare this to..

At very little expense in draft stock, Belichick has replaced Bennett with Allen. Allen is likely a lesser receiver, as good a blocker or better, younger, and cheaper to own. Plus we'll be spared Bennett's mouthy narcissism going forward.

You make a series of unspectacular but solid, team-building moves like this over the years, and before you know it, you're the league's best franchise. The baubles at the top of the draft are too expensive and more risky than thrillseeking fans would like to think. Dull stuff like this wins the day.

Bingo.

Also @PatriotsPimp136 you should read Reiss' piece on how they put together the trade:

Myriad of trades helped put Patriots in position to acquire Dwayne Allen

Reiss makes it sound like they agreed on a 5th rounder but to maintain the total number of picks they have they rather gave the Colts the fourth round pick and get sixth back to stay flexible.

That's what people mean when they say that the Patriots are playing chess when others are playing checkers.

BTW, according to that article by Reiss IND actually did end up getting NE's own 4th-rounder (#137 after you count post-3rd round comp picks) since SEA's pick (as the higher one) will be stolen by Roger.

I wonder what the wording on that is. Not that it matters much but it would interesting to know when exactly Roger steals the pick.

It's officially stolen during the 4th round of the draft when the team before NE is put on the clock and then NE skipped and the team after NE is put on the clock.

But really, it's already stolen since NE can't do anything at all with the pick right now unless they acquire a higher 4th round pick.

using draft picks they way they do, the pats acquire players without having to pay out signing bonuses to them and maintain the ability to jettison these players without a cap hit.....last summer, there were more than a few here that weren't convinced bennett was even going to make the team.

point being is that if allen falls flat on his face, the total risk is what, 45 spots in the draft? with the way the pats target people, there's a chance that the player they would take at 137 will be there at their new draft spot anyway.

Allen is a decent TE to boot.......and allows the team to focus on other needs

This is a steal. Allen is better than Bennett and a very underrated TE. Amazing signing

I know nothing about Dwayne Allen but it seems everyone is happy and excited with this trade. I guess the best part is we didn't break the bank.

Like this move. So, who wins out as our primarilly blocking 3rd TE? You know we'll carry 3 TEs.

Maybe Lengel? Or Michael Williams

THIS
This is why I'm still not "over it"

So would you rather have Rhett Ellison?
