Pats interested in Saints WR Brandin Cooks

Malcolm Mitchell is back, he just had a great 2nd half of the Super Bowl, which has been overlooked. Edelman and Hogan are back. Amendola could very well restructure. All of the above made big plays in the 4th quarter and overtime of the best comeback win in history. The best tight end in league history will return.

And there are people suggesting that the Patriots trade a 1st round pick for a wide receiver who whines. Every single year people bang the drum for wide receivers, because those are recognizable names from fantasy football, and they look nice on their Madden teams. Every offseason this happens.

Trade Jimmy G to the highest bidder, re-up Hightower, load the best defense in the league up with more defenders, and order more rings. Don't trade a 1st for a wide receiver.

If you don't see why people who usually make fun of the typical Fitzgerald, Marshall threads are intrigued by Cooks then you don't remember BB raving about Cooks during joint practices or you don't realize the good fit.

I am the last person here who wants splashy trades but I can see the logic in giving up a pick to a proven receiver with 2 years of cost control (5m avg over 2 years) rather than spending an early pick on a pure projection who could turn out a total bust. Especialy with everyone getting a year older.

I think that for a franchise QB like Brees, it's going to be hard to say he's "done" there after his current contract. As far as I can tell, Brees is like Brady -- older but still effective. The same arguments against rolling from Brady to Jimmy G here would apply in NOLA. Again, you'd need to be able to convince Jimmy G that this was his team in the very near future to get him to extend in NOLA, which is the same problem he has here. If I'm Jimmy G's agent, I make it clear that we would prefer a different trade. And if I'm NO, I don't touch this trade because I don't want to undermine Brees while the team might have something to play for.

A couple years ago, I really would have doubted this story. It seems very odd that we would give up our 1st for what has simply been a luxury position for us all these years. But BB may have decided that it's time to start spending a little heavier on the offense in general so that Tom doesn't need to carry it on his 40 year old back. Just a thought, still taking this with a grain of salt

Disagree BB loves Cooks and just saw how Julio Jones almost single handedly won a superbowl
Cooks can be that kind of weapon with the ball in his hands almost Percy Harvin flexibility as far as catching screens going outs and hand offs reverses and tops.

Wow. Brandin Cooks + Percy Harvin + Julio Jones = 0 Super Bowl Rings.

'Ooh, maybe this guy can be the Michael Jordan of football'.

Julio Jones COULD NOT "almost single-handedly" win the Super Bowl. This ain't the NBA.

Seriously, how can someone watch the past 17 years of the New England Patriots dynasty and NOT understand?

Question: Here's something to ponder: Why in the world would the Saints publicly out the Patriots in their "negotiations" when BB and Payton are such close friends?

Answer for those not getting it yet: Because it was a SHOW that BB allowed his buddy to put on so he can jack up the price for Cooks to other teams.

BB would cut Payton's balls off if this was a real negotiation and he ran to the press to reject an offer from BB.

C'mon folks, think.

When was the last time you heard about a pats offer before it was done deal?

I seriously doubt the original story that any such offer was ever made. (See earlier post about wrs and 1st rnd)

Exactly. There are alot of folks out there who are quickly taking this at face value without taking a moment to breathe and think about it.

The last HC to publicly crow about rejecting an offer or getting the best of BB in an negotiation was that Major Dad lookalike HC of the Viking years ago.

I think he's dead now or something.....

Always interested in your imput, but this isn't about how good or bad Cook is as a player. It's about the value of the POSITION. Cook would be a wonderful LUXURY for the Pats, who would certainly add to an offense that is going to be one of league's top 5 regardless. You know that. How many more wins will it provide?

That is the mantra that drives this team. On the other hand, I believe the impact of a quality DT, DE, LB or even CB prospect would have a greater long term impact on the team's success than ANY WR we brought in. It's just the nature of the offense and the fact the QB is Tom Brady.

Your team's offense has been effective regardless of who is catching the ball. That is the product of Peyton's offensive structure and Drew Brees' effectiveness. You should know better than most that your season might have been more impacted by another good defensive prospect last season than Cook if you had gone that way a few seasons ago. It's all about the wins and losses.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Pats offense would certainly be more exciting and explosive if Cooks were here, but would it result in more wins. OR would bringing in an explosive rookie on the defensive side of the ball have a greater long term impact.

Besides, while Cooks would be a relative bargain at 2 years for about $5MM/yr, there is no way BB is going to pay him whatever top WR's get ($13-15 I'm guessing) after that. So at best you have a 2 year rental as opposed to a defensive prospect at a position of much greater need that you control for 5 years. Granted there is a risk all draft picks bring, but a risk worth taking.

DISCLAIMER - It should be noted that I have always believed that WR's are the position that is the MOST easily replaceable, and their value and importance has always been over hyped by fans and the media. Winning the superbowl with the WR we won it with only proves the point. That's not to say our WR's sucked, but rather quality WR's who can help you win don't need to be first rounders. There are so many of them, they can be found all over the draft and beyond. So this belief obviously affects my thinking

Thanks nice break down. Really enjoyed the read and I think your breakdown is very smart. Yes I think cooks gets you at least 7-3 piots a game because he can shorten the field for ed or gronk or he wants the ball. Thank you ,Cooks at a #32 is a bargin,
Im thinking your under under estimating cooks. I do agree BB will let him go, but I do see him as very , posivtey great player for a short time that is no able to be covered.

I can understand and respect your point but who said Payton is the one who leaked it and it wasnt some other pion in the Saints organization that has loose
Lips?

So you have your receiving corps busting their ass off, being underpaid, trusting the culture of this locker room and them you bring and outsider to make more money and seat in the drivers seat? That doesn't work in any working environment, BB is not stupid to do that, specially with other Free agents on the line to get their pay day.

1. When has a move like this ever leaked out of our organization?

2. When has our coach made a move like this in the past?

This is either a pant load or it's being leaked by the Saints to drive up the price.

I am comfortable in thinking that there is no merit to any of this.

We are a bit funny when we overvalue picks that are "promises" rather than players who have shown something.

I'm not sure he is worth the 32, but I can understand the logic of getting a player BB feels great about, even considering it may only be for two years.

I find that in this day of the "ultra-hyped draft" we sometimes forget that while first rounders do end up being great players at a decent enough clip - the NEP often end up winning with the Flowers, Butlers, Whites of the world so often that maybe we need to rethink how crucial the #32 pick is in the grand scheme.

Further, BB used to always hit on the first round. Or, at least, rarely had a bust. In recent years, the first player NE chooses in the draft has hardly been a superstar. I still love BB the GM, but it furthers the argument that maybe taking the proven player is not as risky as some might suggest.

(But - having said this - YES it is very odd to hear about this "report" in the media)

Sean Payton runs that organization. He is the HC savior in NO. How long has he been the HC there?

It still makes total sense to you that these "negotiations" are being so played out publicly with these ongoing tweets? :D

If this trade actually happens, I would be the first to apologize to you, but.......

C'mon, Chris.

I understand but theres no telling if someone could have a big mouth Payton is good but he isnt BB

This is hilarious.

Yes, the "story" has been leaked for over 24 hours and yet BB still progresses with it?

BB would have cut this off at the knees the moment a leak of negotiations leaked to the press.

He also won't be offering the Patriots to do "Hard Knocks" anytime soon either......

.

I'd rather they be trading for players that trend to having their 40yo old QB throw fewer passes not more.

NE does not have the offensive line to commit to the run. And it takes multiple years to develop one. We also have RB by committee which rarely translates to a great running game. As long as Brady plays, we are going to play to our strength and pass first. I would like a better run game, but I think it will remain just situational.

BB will do what he thinks is needed to improve the team, and I do not think a leak from the Saints would necessarily ashcan a deal (not that he would not be pissed).
