The worst 5 qb in NE Patriots history ?

CB would be an interesting one... Chris Canty would be my pick there.

Duane starks should be under consideration as well

Both. And you forgot "while".

Let's not go overboard on the "Eason quarterbacking the team to the Super Bowl" meme. He played ok. He had a ton of help by his running game, defense and especially turnovers. I think the Pats forced 15 in those 3 games. That's nuts.

Regards,
Chris
Not arguing with or denying any of that.
Just saying that calling him "the worst," "by far" is out of line and not consistent with his performance.

He didn't take them to the SB. He started that year, went 2-3, got benched, Grogan came in, won 5 straight, broke his leg, Eason came back in and went 3-3 down the stretch. The stupidest thing Ray Berry ever did was refuse to put Grogan back in during the playoffs when he was healthy again.

But no, Eason did not /lead/ them to anything. Christ, his starting left tackle openly said he wore a dress.
John Hannah was a guard and said Eason should wear a dress.

Oddly enough, the trade for Joe Kapp and the press conference which followed is my earliest Patriots memory. Being 10, I was convinced the Pats were destined to win it all.

Even more oddly, my second earliest Patriots memory is when we drafted Jim Plunkett #1 the very next year. Being 11, I was again convinced the Patriots would win it all :) I wish I could have maintained that etenal optimism to this day.

But my actual nomination for worst Pats QB is Rich Gannon. He was so bad they traded him without even giving him a chance at QB!
That's not what happened with Gannon. He was considered to be a very good athlete coming out of college and most teams were interested in him as a conversion to a different position. His agent sent letters to all NFL teams saying not to draft him unless they wanted him as a QB prospect. The Pats drafted him anyway. It isn't clear if they disregarded the agent's letter or if the message didn't make it to the decision makers. When he got to the Pats, he was traded to Minnesota and began as a backup for them.

In 1985-86, Eason started and won three Playoff Games that "took the Pats" to the SB. He threw five TD's and no picks in those games, which the Pats won by a cumulative score of 84--48; his QB rating was well over 115.

Berry put Grogan in to start the SB (in which I fully understand the Pats were over-matched by a team on a mission). He threw for 177 yards and two picks, not winning this or any of the four Playoff Games that he started. As I recall, Eason was sent in to finish the game when it was out of hand.

The only other QB in Pats history to start and win three playoff games in one season is "you know who."

Unless the lineman who made that comment had the last name of Hannah, I really don't give a flying **** what he thought.

As I said, I'm not putting tony Eason into Canton or even Patriot Place.

But "the worst?" "by far?" No way if you look at what he actually did.

Guys earn the right to Respect when they play for our team, put up a winning record and do respectably in the playoffs.

I'm giving Respect to Tony Eason. I suspect the guys in the Pats locker room today, who know how hard it is to win in the post-season, would do so as well.
It was Hannah that said he should wear a dress

It was Hannah that said he should wear a dress
OK. I checked that and verified it.
So, yeah, I have to respect whatever Hannah said, but it still doesn't make Tony Eason "the worst" Pats QB "by far."
Also, Hannah was probably the most competitive guy to play for the Pats until Brady came along. I'm sure he meant it, but I'm also sure he said it in the heat of the moment.

No, he didn't put Grogan in to start the SB. Eason started and Grogan replaced him after it was clear Eason was crapping his pants.

Eason had a lot of talent. And no heart.

Among my fave Eason games was at Anaheim, throwing the winning TD to Fryar (after Stanley deflected it up in the air) in '86. That was lots of fun.

damn--no recollection of this dude:

Jeff Carlson

1992

18-49 for 232yds 1td 3int in 3 games for the NEP

that's sucktastic
A bit of trivia that will interest at least two forum members:
  • Carlson was the last Patriot quarterback to play in a game with Pat Patriot on his helmet as part of the standard uniform (i.e., excluding throwbacks that Brady (2002) and Bledsoe (1994) wore).

And some trivia that would interest forum members that arrived and departed in the 2013 off-season:
  • Carlson was the only left handed quarterback to appear in a regular season game for the Patriots.

This is on YouTube in its entirety. Bad quality, though.

Whatever.

No one on the Pats "crapped their pants" that day. They were run over by a freight train in the form of what was probably the best Defense ever to play in a Super Bowl that wasn't wearing Steelers' colors. No shame in that loss on any player or any unit of the team. They were outplayed, out-coached and outclassed.

As to who started, the game was a long time ago and I remember that the Pats went up 3--0 after recovering a fumble early, but, after that, I was well into multiple Manhattans.

I looked up the Box Score and, FWIW, Grogan replaced Eason at the five minute mark of the second quarter.

Grogan's line for the game shows four sacks, two picks, one Safety taken and one TD to Irving Fryer when they were down 44-3. Some, just looking at it, would say that that line is pretty close to "pants crapping" as well.

As I have said multiple times, I'm not putting Eason in Canton or Patriot place. I'm just saying that he wasn't the "worst" "by far" ever to QB the Pats. He won three Playoff Games as starter leading up to that SB. As I said above, Brady is the only other QB in Pats history to win three Playoff games in a single season...of course he did it five times and has five rings, so I'm not comparing Eason and Brady. Just saying that it's hard to call the other guy to pull that off the "worst" QB "by far" in Pats history.

I'm more or less done with this discussion.

No, he wasn't the worst QB in Pats history. That would be ludicrous. But he DID have a serious cardiac deficiency. There's a reason he only played 90 games in his NFL career.

Career stats:
90 games 61TDs 51INTs 11,142 yards

PS: To this day, he holds the record as the only QB in NFL history to start a SB and fail to complete a single pass.

Great.
That's all I was saying.

For all the lack of love for Eason, remember he is one of the few guys in NFL history to win 3 road playoff games in one year...exorcising demons of Pats not winning in Miami or beating Oakland in a playoff game.. Yeah he had his faults but not enough to belong on a worst 5 list....

Since we've digressed into other positions, I'll throw out the name of who I consider the worst player I've ever seen the Pats trot out (disclaimer: I only started watching closely in 2010).

Jordan Devey.
