You are correct about other factors being more important than resolution, such as refresh rate (not fake ones, like 120 hertz and the soap opera effect), black levels, etc.

I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually love the soap opera effect. I have a TV that supports 240 hz just b/c I love this feature so much.

Important note, in this release the blu ray version also comes with a DVD (this was not the case for the 2014 release).

As such, even if you don't have a blu ray player I highly suggest you pay the 3 extra dollars to get the blu ray. You'll be glad you did when you do finally get a blu ray player.

We finally upgraded to blu ray machines a year ago. They are only like $50 now.

But we never use them because we stream everything.

Which means we stream in SD because we don't want lag/buffering.

It's like a technology moon walk.

OK. We've had "Quantum Mechanic" and "Fourier Series" explain the TV size and viewing distance science for us.

I wanna know what Exponent Inc.* and Bill Nye* have to say about it! :)

The Super Bowl 49 Blu Ray is also available on Amazon for $11. That's a really good price.

Anyone who doesn't own a Blu ray player by now probably hasn't even heard of the internet yet anyway

I got a Blu-Ray Player and sent it back.

I do have a DVD player.

Most people I know don't have any players whatsoever. They all stream and download.

Damn near everything comes with a blu ray player these days. An Xbox, a Playstation, a happy meal, a toaster, a sewing kit. Everything

I agree. I'm only one of the few people I know that actually still buys movies. What can I say, I like my movies? Plus a quality nut so I prefer the blu ray quality vs stream quality. (yes, I know some people can get great quality through streaming and not have lag, but I'm not one of those people)

This article has a different viewing chart which is more aligned with what I've observed, but to each their own. You are correct about other factors being more important than resolution, such as refresh rate (not fake ones, like 120 hertz and the soap opera effect), black levels, etc. Unfortunately LCD televisions will never surpass the technology and viewing benefits of the now defunct plasmas. They have inherent problems with dark scenes and refresh speed due to the way they work. OLED, however, is a different beast altogether and may in fact be better than plasma, so there is some hope.

Why Ultra HD 4K TVs are still stupid

We used to have a best-in-class 50" Fujitsu plasma that was a 720p (this was around 2007), and compared to every other television, it was easily the best overall picture on the consumer market (until surpassed by another plasma, the Pioneer Elite Kuro.). Anyway, after being told it was "only" 720p, a lot of customers freaked out and went with a lesser 1080p set, since they suddenly swore they could tell the difference, even though they absolutely could not. The Fujitsu classed every other set in tests where viewers s weren't told the specs. The LCD makers started using incredibly marketing techniques to replace plasmas with a worse technology with better buzzwords and bigger numbers, more pixels, etc.

That chart literally says the same thing the other links I posted say - the benefits become apparent when sitting within 7 feet of a 55 inch screen.

Your old Plasma doesn't have anywhere near the same level of peak brightness or as wide of a color gamut. It doesn't have high dynamic range. My panel is native 120Hz, and black levels are terrific.

I know it's difficult to think that technology has advanced over the years, but it has.

Problem is that most people don't even own an HDTV. I know people who still have those CRT TVs that are like 24 inches and weight like 200 lbs. An upgrade to an HDTV is worth it to save the back pain alone.

Then you have people saying that DVD is just fine and can't tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray. Most people seem to be too stubborn for this stuff or they simply don't care.

That's it. I'm breaking out ole Betsy.

Unless you have an OLED, you are being fooled by statistics. Ask any person who truly knows about display panels.

Good deal. I don't have a Blu-Ray player, so I have to settle for the old-fashioned DVD machine.

Nice, thanks,

Cool story. My TV is among the highest rated by professional reviewers who "truly know about display panels."

But by all means, enjoy your 3rd world TV.

I don't mean to be pedantic nerd, but I worked in the audio video industry for years. Do you happen to sit a foot away from your large screen television while watching? Or do you have a projector with a screen over 120 inches? If the answer is no on both of these, you are fooling yourself if you think you can tell the difference between 4K and 1080p. It is scientifically proven. My 1080p plasma, last edition flagship Samsung, will put these 4K LCDs to shame.
ooh, awesome, A/V talk. i used to spend a ton of time on AVSforum years ago when i was researching my first projector.

i ended up getting a sanyo plv-70 (1368x768, 2200 lumens, 900:1 contrast ratio) with a 120" da-lite pull down screen.

both died a few years ago (yup, the screen died--the spring wouldn't make it retract into the housing any more), so i replaced it with an epson 5020ub (1920x1080, 2400 lumens, 320,000:1 contrast ratio) and a motorized 135" screen. the total cost of both ended up being about half what i paid 15 years ago.

i'm sure in 10 years when i'll have to replace this projector, i'll probably be able to get an awesome 4k projector at half again the cost of my current one.

Your crazy no offense if you think that can't tell the difference between watching a 1080p video and a 4K, huge difference makes you not want to watch 1080p anymore sd/hd difference pretty much imo

What's on the blu ray? just the game? or is there anything exclusive that's good on it?
