OT: The TV show I work on...DOUBT

I had one several years ago. At the time I didn't have a DVR, so I'm not much help there. Tried to find that column on the three days/DVR, but could not locate it.

Apparently Nielsen has changed their boxes somewhat in the interim. With mine we were given a separate remote, programmed for each each household member (for demographic purposes). There were extra buttons for guests, where we would be prompted for M/F and input their age. We had to select which of us was watching on their remote every time we turned on any television in our home.

Rather than relying on audio to insure the cable box was on but tv was off, the remote and Nielsen box would both flash after a certain amount of time (I think two hours?) to insure somebody was still there watching. That could be annoying at times.
Same thing now, except the remote flashes like every 30 minutes. Drives me nuts but I get a little money and the kids get toys. Oh, and I get to contribute to the decline of ESPN.

To be clear for anyone interested: I of course would LOVE to write for a cool, edgy cable show, and those are the kind of shows I pitch when I'm in the room trying to get my own shows made - and, as I've said, cable or streaming shows are pretty much exclusively the shows I watch. But there's something to be said for a network show from my perspective, namely it pays a hell of a lot better and you reach a far bigger audience. (For the most part.)

The most important thing here, though: Even if you're not interested in network shows or in THIS PARTICULAR NETWORK SHOW, it would be awesome and helpful and appreciated if you DVRd it or watched or spread the news to folks in your life who maybe ARE open to network programming. Thanks!
mom dad sis bro. watch this show on cbs. why they ask? because some guy on a message board asked me to ask you to watch or dvr it. lmao ain't happening.

Do the people posting in this thread about how they don't like network TV realize they're coming off as huge douchebags?
Emotional intelligence should be part of the curriculum in grade school. Other than that, the only way most of us notice our bad traits is when we notice it in others. But there will still be a few who don't have the ability to self reflect even when their image is stirring at them in a mirror.

Back to the original point, I did see the 1st show and have my dvr set to record it. I liked the 1st show. The foundation seems to be there to explore the various characters. I only saw one promo on TV before the show started. I take it the marketing support hasn't been overwhelming. Hopefully it survives long enough to get traction.

My girlfriend already dvrd it.
Can I ask what is your role in the show?

I'm a writer/producer on it. I appreciate you asking, thanks so much for DVR-ing! And to your girlfriend, as well.

Regarding DVRing a show and Nielsen ratings: I read somewhere that if a person watches within three days then it still counts towards Nielsen ratings, but networks want that pushed up to seven days.

Unfortunately it is a moot point unless you have a Nielsen box in your home.

The best thing you can do to help JC out is talk about the show with your friends, co-workers, etc. Eventually it will filter from one of us to somebody that currently has one of those black boxes, which represents thousands of viewers.

Not sure if it's just Nielsens anymore, although yes, those are big. Agree that word of mouth is super helpful, so any of you "non-network" types (like me!) please do pass it along to your lamer friends and family!

That's what I took away the first (and second and third and fourth) times I saw or read the pilot. It definitely sets up an interesting, clear "world" - including and especially the element of the show that chose the Skakel trial from real life.

I DVRed it before seeing this, I sometimes try dramas out before, usually, passing. I haven't watched this yet.

Honestly I had no idea DVRs were factored in. I didn't know they knew what I was recording. I have DirecTV, don't know if that makes a difference, but I had no idea there was anything "going out" saying what I recorded.

I have one, although I'm not an expert on it I'm just going off what they told me. I don't know about a time limit but he said it isn't tracked unless I watch something. The sound from my box is routed through the Nielsen box then to the television. Until it captures the sound going to the television it's not tracking. Maybe DVRs are tracked by other means, I don't know. I'm not sure about a wait time, but if not SB 51 is getting increasing ratings every few days.

Very cool. This is the part where I beg beg beg you to DVR or let Doubt play on your tv, even if you hate every second of the show. And I don't necessarily think you will. I'd really appreacite it.

You know, I get it. As I've said, I haven't watched a network show in literally over a decade. I suspect nobody in most writers rooms have either. I asked because I've been part of this community for way longer than a decade. The fact that you insist on relentlessly ragging on the mere consideration some posters are asking for - and just not seeing the bigger picture - is unfortunate. There's a way to be a human being about it, even in saying no thanks.

At least you didn't recommend Walking Dead that is immediately disqualifying in terms of credibility. I haven't seen Taboo thanks for the tip.

West World. You're welcome.

WestWorld is currently the best show on TV, IMO. I really don't think there's a close second, either.

I enjoyed west world, but imo THE AMERICANS is very, very good.

It certainly gets solid reviews but, for whatever reason, it just wasn't drawing me in.

I've had a long standing debate going on with my wife and children. Maybe as a person in that business you can help.

It's my contention that the true strength in television and movies is the writing. There are some actors who stand out, but for the most part you could swap many of the actors in most successful, well written films and it would likely be just as popular.

I saw it said in a post somewhere around here that described how I feel ... actors read lines that are written by a writer and are told how to say them by a director. Is it wrong to think that's true?

I think it's probably not as cut and dry as that - more of a balance or a just-right recipe - but I do agree that writing is paramount. It's easier for so so actors to pull off a great script than it is for great actors to bring life to mediocre writing. Sooooooo much has to do with technical aspects, too. Editors are storytellers. Cinematographers are storytellers. The special shows - for me, MASH, Soparanos, west wing, the wire, breaking bad, sports night and others - are the whole package, and they positively SING. That's art.
