His legacy is strange and unlikely. The expectations were a 100-catch, 1,200 receiver and Wes Welker replacement, and there was almost universal criticism when BB signed him as Wes walked away. I think Amendola never had the same burst after his initial groin injury after his first game here against Buffalo (later revealed a full separation of his groin.) He was what we all feared, a very injury prone player. He was surpassed on the depth chart by Julian Edelman. He was never as consistent as Welker, and his production paled in comparison by a gigantic margin. He never topped 70 receptions or 650 yards in a season. In short, he was a 3rd or 4th option in the offense, a guy who was reliable but not spectacular. A guy whose stats fell so short of his initial contract that anyone would call him a bust without hesitation.

Right? Except...Danny Amendola will go down as one of the most beloved Patriots to put on the uniform.

I cannot recall a time in four years that Danny Amendola did not make a catch on either third or fourth down with the game on the line. Some catches were absurdly difficult...he has never dropped one. Any time we were in the most critical, most pressure packed situation, in the most important games, Danny Amendola was Tom Brady's most trusted target. I would like to compile a list, but I wouldn't know where to begin. 3rd and 10, 4th and 10, late in fourth quarter where it's literally first down or game over, Amendola is, along with Troy Brown, the most money wide receiver I have ever seen. He scored fourth quarter TDs in both Super Bowls.

He took big pay cuts twice to come back here, just to win; he loved to play in New England, with Brady. He never complained about a lack of targets. He always went out 110% on every down, whether as a decoy, blocker, or as the target of the team's last gasp for life. He battled through injuries and played through pain more often than being close to healthy.

Amendola and Long, both knew what it meant to play with Brady after being with the Lambs.

Have been thinking the same for a few days, and you saved me the effort of having to create a post about it.
And did a better job than I would have.

Excellent post. I still remember the commerical when he got here in which he says "I'm kinda important here" or something along the lines. What an incredible clutch player.

he does whatever he has to do for the team, and when asked to, does his job....period.....and that commitment to team or ability to get it done never changes, never waivers

He got hit harder by the fan base than any team on the field.

Yet he kept trying to find ways to fit in. He learned special teams. He did whatever he could to stay here, even when many didn't want him here.

He is a champion in every sense of the word. And it's nice he finally gets that recognition.

We were at Gillette on 8/16/13 for Danny's first catch from Tom (my daughter was a Junior Patriots Cheerleader). Expecting anything as good as Wes from anybody is silly; but Danny just turned out to be one of those rare character players.

He's a Boston sports hero. No, I don't see us winning our last two Super Bowls (or the next one) without him.

Working out and rehabbing and challenging yourself every day to improve and be ready, amidst an unheralded, quiet, sometimes grim and lonely backdrop while being completely out of the limelight, and forgotten or denigrated in the media is hard. It's also heroic.

Danny is a clutch stone cold killer Patriot.

i think his regular season produciton has been hampered b/c of the unexpected development of Edelman

if wes were in his shoes, wes' numbers would also go down because edleman would take away some of his plays, its more a testament to how good JE is than to how not good either danny or wes are

i don't care if it is at the same exact salary, i want Danny back here, from any of our WRs, or a WR in the NFL, i would take Danny to catch one must win ball in a big game....over them all

if the ball is meaningful, danny will not drop it i don't care how you place it

if there's a gif or pic of him catching that ball late in the game running a post from left to right...its incredible

There are things I love about his game such as his blocking but don't go overboard. I also feel that he came up small in our games against Denver with some untimely drops or no catches at all like in the 2013afccg. I like him but he isn't a legend and soon enough I can see Mitchell running every route he does but better.

Agree with absolutely everything in the OP.

Amendola is a legend.

Without a doubt.

4th and 3, if Pats don't convert it's game over. Biggest play of the game, Brady looked all the time only at Amendola on that play. Legend indeed
