I don't think Shanahan's call to throw on a 2nd & long 11 (12) down the stretch was a bad call, despite everyone and their brother killing him over it

on Inside the NFL last night at one point you hear Ryan and wither Quinn or Shanny talking on the sideline, something along the lines of 'keep doing what we do'

Ryan was pretty much lights out all night, he made most of his throws.....they were an aggressive team all year - they go conservative and get stuffed twice more, and then miss a long FG, and everyone is chiding them for changing what they do

they went for the kill shot, and they HAD it......primary option was open going down the field, it would have hit for a first down or TD

if freeman makes his blitz pick up, even makes an attempt, kill shot is made, everyone praises his killer instinct, game over.....

the call was a good one, freeman just spaced out on a simple blitz pick up, and hightower made the play

now should they have run on 3rd, picked up a small chunk and kicked the long field goal? don't remember the exact yardage, if a 5 yard draw picks up enough to matter AND forces a patrtiot time out?

but i think the call on 2 and 12, when everyone expects run, was aggressive and a decent call....just **** execution

My contention isn't really faulting ATL for not running the ball as the NEP really locked down on it but IMO they should have thrown to their RBs more. Freeman and Coleman in the flat w/ Shea, Van Noy ,High, Nink, etc was a great matchup for them all game and I don't think they exploited it enough.

You have your missed blocks mixed up. Freeman missed Hightower on the strip sack. Flowers ragdolled Alex Mack on 2nd and 11.

I think we blitzed a lot more than normal, specifically to keep them in.

Funny that people were saying we had no chance to defend their RBs, and they got very little, while James White dominated.

Its actually funny to see how the Patriots essentially scared the Falcons away from running despite their big start with a couple of well executed run stuffs.

It wasnt as bad a call as it was made to be, just like pete carrolls decision to throw for a td. Not that i agree with either, but its more just people pms'ing over us winning another close sb and they gotta take it out on someone. Atl could not run the ball well since midway through the 3rd and they have an mvp qb. Its really not that far fetched

I generally like the idea of staying aggressive. But at that juncture of the game a FG was looking almost as good as a TD and the idea of being able to run some clock (or at least force NE to take a time out) seemed rather ideal.

I thought I heard BB say to Berman or someone that they sent 5 rushers more in the 2nd 1/2.

Or, they could have kicked the field goal and probably won. Glad they gave our D a chance, though.

This is what sports folks do: They second guess, it's half the fun.

Everyone chides Carroll for throwing on the 1 yard line, but it was just as risky (perhaps more so, when you consider an INT had never happened on a throw from the 1 all year) to try to score the TD at the end of the first half in that game. Stop short and you get 0 points instead of the field goal. But it worked, so everyone praised his aggressiveness.

Same thing would have happened here if Ryan converted on that play instead of the sack. People would have said it was gutsy, and that they stayed aggressive because "that's how you beat the Patriots".
