Berger tryout
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots had veteran punter Mitch Berger in for a tryout at Gillette Stadium today. The 35-year-old Berger has primarily been a dome punter over his career, enjoying a long stint with the Vikings (1996-2001) and most recently punting for the Saints (2003-2005).

New England has three punters on its roster: Josh Miller, Danny Baugher and Tom Malone.

Hehehe, be the ball Josh, feel the ball, nanananana....

Seems like last year we got the idea that you can never have too many punters on call.

Seems to me, though, that you can.

The brain trust never ceases to confuse me.

It must have been a tough pick when the Pats had decide between Miller and Sauerbrun. Like Kevin Walter before them, the Pats opted for dependability (Miller) over the the stats potential.

They should have kept Sauerbrun. That was a blunder.

What are Tom Tupa and Rich Camarillo up to?

If Josh Miller isn't the Pats' punter, then the terrorists have won.

I bet K Tony Franklin still has some kick left...What is he like 65 years old now?

Didn't they try to keep Sauerbrun and he filed a grievance and won? Can't do much about that....

Does anyone know the status on Josh Miller? I thought when Sauebrun left that Miller had the job....

Josh is coming off rehab for a bad shoulder. He's reportedly been a bit rusty, but not so much so that he isn't competitive in camp. Danny Baugher had a great season in NFLE and is reportedly doing well against Josh, though I don't think either has a clear lead at this point. Tom Malone has a strong leg, but he was the lowest ranked punter in NFLE after coming off his own rehab. He reportedly had slipped in his technique trying to compensate for an injury before he went to rehab. Seely will try to coach him up and make him competitive, he can hang around with his NFLE exemption for a bit and may yet get into the running. I see Berger as insurance and incentive for the three in camp, no big deal.

They tried. Sauerbrun wanted to be in Denver, fought, and won his free agency. Something to do with "rights of first refusal." I don't understand the full details, but it appeared that the front office dropped the ball on that one.

Yeah I definitely think they should have kept Sauerbrun. Oh well, at least its not Ken Walter.

A punter is about to go from "day to day" to injured reserve.

Oh no! Were you seeing what I was seeing -- someone who had a slow release, couldn't place his kicks and outkicked the coverage?
