I hope and trust that this is just idle speculation, but suppose Edelman DID have to QB, in a situation where going all run all the time didn't seem likely to win the game. What would happen?

My guesses start:
  • He's probably practiced enough to maintain good throwing mechanics. The one pass to Amendola is encouraging in that respect, although his footwork wasn't exactly standard.
  • BB and Josh McD probably have well-founded opinions as to what kind of situations Edelman would probably make good decisions in and which he wouldn't. Play-calling would be in line with those.
  • There wouldn't be a lot of designed runs. Those aren't in the playbook in general, so the rest of the team hasn't practiced them much. Besides, keeping Edelman healthy would seem important.
  • However, if the first down on the ground was there, he'd take it. So the defense would have to respect his rushing ability.

If Edelcritter is playing QB, we are screwed six ways to Sunday.

Please....not the Edsel.

I think I'd take my chances with Derby instead, both because he's less likely to be broken in half by JJ Watt and less of a loss if that happens.

AJ Derby will play QB before Edelman.. Donno why we forgot him, was QB 3 years ago and been in the system for 1½ year. He's much better then any street FA QB AND he's on the roster anyway ! Jimmy G might be the backup, but I beleave Derby plays vs Texans and he's the real emergency QB.

Interesting theory.

Would actually make sense, not least because a raw QB's best safety valve on the team, TEs perhaps aside, would be Edelman.

I would rather AJ Derby play QB than Edelman who is years removed.o_O

Also, Derby can see over the OL. Edelman is too short to be able to throw over almost any DL with hands up. Lots of batted balls would result.

He would be horrible, and we would need to run every down.

Point of order: he would NOT run the EdelCat.

He would run the...

...well... you know...

Is suspect Derby would be the guy for reasons already mentioned; he's much bigger than Edelman, played the position more recently, and importance to the team. On one hand I don't want to see it happen, on the other, it would be fascinating to watch. I suspect we would see some option plays being run and a lot of power formations. Perhaps a full back and two tailbacks in the backfield at the same time and some creative passing plays. I would love to see what Bill and Josh would come up with.

I'm so conflicted now, between not wanting anything else bad to happen to anyone playing QB for the Pats and wanting to see Derby come in and do a credible job of quarterbacking to win a competitive game. That would likely result in not only Goodell's but also many media heads exploding. It would make for so much amusement...

1/1 with a TD in a playoff game. Perfect passer rating, does he go into Canton as a QB or WR? BTW I hope we don't have to find out on Thursday.

The one thing I know absolutely to be true if it happened:

His PASSER RATING would GO DOWN ;)

Russell Wilson disagrees with you.

I see your point, but I respectfully disagree. Derby didn't really play that much at QB, he was a backup at Iowa and Oklahoma before being converted to TE, the only year he really played QB was one year at Coffeyville Community College. Conversely, Edelman was an excellent college QB, a starter for 3 years at Kent State.

However, the primary reason I would expect Edelman over Derby is that Edelman has a deep understanding of the Patriot Offense, a sky-high football IQ, and years of experience in that offense. Derby was on IR last year so his experience with the Patriot offense is very limited. IMHO, it is the same reason why we haven't even considered bringing in an emergency backup QB, because nobody could learn the offense fast enough to run it by Thursday.
