Revis island has sunk

Revis is still owed $8,000,000 in guaranteed money next year (6 million of his 13 million dollar salary is guaranteed and a 2 million dollar roster bonus. No way he sees his 10 million salary in 2018. But cutting him next year, they would only save $7.3 million in cap space, BUT they would still have to pay him $8 million for doing nothing!

You have to hand it to Revis, he has played the hold out, switch teams, contract game better than any other player in NFL history!

How much money has Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis earned during his NFL career?

Here's a look at how much Revis has earned in cash during each of his NFL seasons:

2007 (Jets): $5.319 million (including $4,700,500 signing bonus)
2008 (Jets): $5,082,500 (including $2.2 million roster bonus and $2,412,500 restructure bonus)
2009 (Jets): $6.26 million (including $5.7 million roster bonus)
2010 (Jets): $8.038 million (including $7.5 million base salary)
2011 (Jets): $25 million (including $18 million option bonus)
2012 (Jets): $7.5 million (including $4.5 million base salary)
2013 (Buccaneers): $16 million (including $13 million base salary)
2014 (Patriots): $12 million (including $10 million signing bonus)

So that works out to career cash earnings of $85,199,500 -- give or take. But who's counting?

Toss in his $39 million fully guaranteed from the Jets, as part of his new contract, and he's at $124,199,500 in career cash earnings -- $96,199,500 of which has been paid by Jets owner Woody Johnson.

Revis was what we needed 2 years ago. But even then BB understood that he was not the guy to shut down the opposing #1. he mostly put revis on the #2 guy one on one and had the #1 guy doubled. Bowles for some reason, puts Revis back on the island he inhabited 4 years a go before his Knee surgery.

Revis Island? More like Revis peninsula. At best.

Hey, it happens to all players. Time isn't kind.

That contract was hilarious the day it was printed. It was pretty clear that they opened negotiations by handing him a blank check and crooning "pleeeease!"

Great player, future hall-of-famer, and perhaps the greatest contract milker the league has ever seen.
Yeah, Woody Johnson personally stuffed a football with feathers and gave it to Revis along with the check...

Thanks for the research!
All Pats fans owe Woody their gratitude for paying him all those years to hone his craft on a losing team so he could help the Pats win #4.

Unless he really goes downhill, if he's a good NFL CB he's worth the $7.3M cap space next year.
He faced a great WR in his prime yesterday.

Revis is a shadow of his former self, but I suspect that he still has a few big plays left in him. Let's just hope they don't come against the Pats.

Hes not as good as he was in 2009 but he still was an elite Top 5 CB last year.

Will he be one this year is a serious question.

Folks might be overlooking that the patriots were willing to throw A LOT of money at Revis last offseason as well. Not as crazy $$ as the Jets were offering but we were absolutely willing to make him one of the highest paid CB in the league as well.

I will also throw out there that the long TD catch he should have had safety help over the top which makes up for a large chunk of the yardage and the TD - Just sayin.

Best CB in the league - No.

Worth the $$ the Jets paid him - Probably not.

Would I take him back - Yes.

The IRS is, and so are the state level tax collectors. They get a big slice, roughly half. Then add in his agents, and his family, and his posse, and he's feeding a lot of mouths. But even still, he's set for life, unless he's a total idiot (but when it comes to money, many NFL players are idiots).

And now by locking down SOOO much money on DL and DB that the Jets will need an awful lot of awful cheap players to be able to contend going forward.

I wonder if that ridiculous contract would've been offered by the jets to Revis if he had played for any team other than the Patriots in 2014

Sometimes I think that our weaker sister to the south loses their minds a little when trying to outdo the Pats

I often hear that a player is worth more money if he plays for a divisional rival because you are not only getting a good player but depriving him from a competitor. With the salary cap, that is a double edged sword, with this being a case in point. A player is worth a certain value. Overpaying is bad and underpaying is good. The Patriots are stronger for moving on and the Jets are weaker. Cuts both ways.

In the end, when it's two teams bidding in the same division, all it means is the impact of the transaction will effect both teams more. Overpaying, though, is still just as detrimental, and in an auction, the winner almost always loses.

It's arguable if Revis was worth $17M per year, or even $15M a year, when he was 25. Even in that case, signing him for three years guaranteed with no options to soften the blow? Jets paying for their impulses to win at the wrong things.

Would love to hear from Miguel on The Jets options for Revis and his contract next year.

From what I understand they can cut him before his $2 mil roster bonus kicks in and ONLY be on the hook for $6 mil. HAHAHAH

I'd be interested to know what the ball park discussions were with the Patriots. So glad it didn't happen, even 8 million per seems a little overpriced after yesterday. He'll probably bounce back but definitely showing signs of being worn out.

Exactly this. We have no way of knowing what was actually offered. I have a hard time believing Bellichick offered anything even close to what was reported.

Yet there's a shiny ring that Darrelle Revis wears with pride in the privacy of his own home, and the team logo isn't the one owned by Woody Johnson.

People wanted the Jets to get a punishment for tampering with Revis. Well, now you know they got one. They have to pay him elite CB money to be far less than elite.

Many will be sipping drinks on Revis Island this year.

No he wasn't. He got torched often last year too.
