Only one preseason game but beyond the physical ability which was on full display last night, what BB said about him jumped out at me.

"He worked really hard, took a lot of plays in practice to get somewhat comfortable with what we're doing. It's obviously going to be a work in progress here, it's only been a week, but he's smart, he learns well, and he works hard. So check all those boxes."

You don't have to keep going over the same information with him. Once you give it to him, he has it and then you go on to something else. He has good retention, good instincts, and I think he understands football.

The players that succeed here are the ones that learn quickly, commit it to mental (and muscle) memory, apply it on gameday and work hard. If they do that, their talent takes over.

I dont think he will be a 3 down player here but he will have a role. He will learn that role. He will become comfortable with that role. He will play fast and decisively. They may try to expand it but if he falters, it won't be because he mentally can't grasp the function of the role and the concepts of the defense.

I cannot wait to see this guy progress during the season. He'll help this team no question.

I too understand it was only a single preseason game, but that guy has unbelievable speed and quickness. I am not and Xs and Os type by any stretch, but wouldn't it be great to have long on one side and mingo on the other side rushing the edges when, say, Osweiler is facing third and long?

Exactly. Its one thing to be an intelligent, solid, but unspectacular performer like Nink but a different deal altogether when you mesh elite talent with the same ability to learn quick, apply and execute.

Seems like thats Mingo but we'll see as the year goes on.

Mingo is the solution to problematic idea that Jonathan Freeney was going to backfill Jerod Mayo.

See I don't think Mingo is an inside the hashes guy. Hes certainly excellent in pursuit on the backside but Freeny is a bigger player more geared to be on the inside.

I am glad he's around 260 now. His hand size was not ideal but i think he can be another edge rusher for us. He can also cover in space.

Does he really look 260? He looks less than that.

Vrabel was 6-4 261.

The other factor is the Patriots approach to talent.

Most teams: "Here's what WE do... now, let's try to fit YOU into it."

Pats: "Let's see what YOU can do... then figure out how WE can best maximize that for our team."

I hope everyone is keeping those expectations in check He's got great gifts, but also some limitations which can be exposed IF he isn't put in the right situations. But the OP is correct that it is likely Mingo's tenure here will be a good one simply because this staff is known for NOT putting their players in bad positions. That they DON'T try and put round pegs in square holes.

A while back IIRC, Steve or Ian stated it so well what differentiates the Pats and other staffs in how they handle players who come to Foxboro and why the so often work out well. I promise if someone finds it I will commit it to memory.

I think it went something like: Instead of trying to make the player fit into their system, they take what the player does well and absorb that into their structure. That's the idea but they said it so much better.

BTW- wasn't the big complaint about Mingo in Cleveland that he DIDN'T have any football instincts

Time will tell but the Browns seem like idiots over this trade.

I think the new regime just didn't want him- whatever reason.

The kid can play. How they could not see that is absurd.

Could it possibly be...

We have two of them?!!

Its only one game but his instincts looked pretty good to me.

I'm not there yet. Collins seems more powerful and versatile and Mingo faster to me.

Oh I'm not saying he IS Jamie Collins. But if we have another player with that speedy skill set along with the ability to pass rush, it could be hard to beat.

Perhaps given their similarities, even if not exactly the same, the patriots view him as insurance against Collins walking next year or the year after.

My favorite part of recent seasons is how much more athletic BB has made our defense. Very few big slow guys, everyone can fly at the second level.

I know. I think the NFL scout is off. Maybe he was from the Browns :p
