Pats WR situation.

I didn't guarantee his success, either. I don't think he'll be cut, but if he has a poor camp showing and his competition beats him out, they may hide him on Ir.

Since 2000, the patriots have NEVER successfully HID a rookie on IR and then had him become a significant contributor.

Yes, but Vereen was on the 53 man roster.
Yeah he'd probably be the closest thing to it. Usually not a recipe for success to IR a rook. On the flip side, if he were more valuable he probably isn't IRed to begin with.

As far as I can tell, not unsuccessfully either. Most rookies who fans imagine were "stashed" to protect them from waivers end up cut before training camp. The whole stashing phenomenon just doesn't exist.

Under Belichick, 100% of the 4th rounders have made the 53, so yes we have a reason to believe that a 4th pick will make the team.

I recall this kind of argument made when the pats never drafted an RB in the first round or any other never happened before

I could certainly see Lucien beat out Mitchell.....Lucien was more productive and was able to pick up the ASU offense quick after leaving UCLA.

We are only going to carry up to 5 WRs at most. I strongly doubt we will carry 6 WRs at the start of the season.

Edelman and Hogan are locks. Mitchell should make it as well.

Harper is 100% going back to the practice squad. Lucian could make it but no one knows until TC.

That leaves us with Martin, Amendola, Washington and Glass-Foot.

I mean, it's really a toss up. Martin had some decent performances but he wasn't consistent. I don't think we can rely on him to get open as often as Edelman does. Amendola is decent but his cap hit is pretty high and we still have another season of his cap hit after this season. We could cut him now in favor of Washington who has a significantly cheaper cap hit, but Washington is old.

Then we have Mr. Glass-Foot. As far as potential goes, he has the highest out of the remaining four, but I don't know if people here can handle him after disappointing us year after year. Most likely Ras-IR Dowling 2.0. Just unfortunate.

My prediction: Edelman, Hogan, Amendola, Martin, Mitchell.

Happens every year now don't it? Good to see you're still fighting the good fight because the only stash is the one they're smoking. ;)

The only locks I believe are Edelman and Hogan. Those who quote there hss never been a fourth round pick to not make the 53 there is always a first time for everything. Training camp and preseason should be interesting and fun to watch

Amendola's job is safe ... Edelman goes down Amendola is the only receiver who can partially fill the void. Also amendola and Edelman on the field at the same time is a luxury.

I'll be honest, I'm intrigued by the WR draft picks the Patriots made. The more I read, the more enthused I become about them however, until the Pats show they can draft then develop a wide out, that enthusiasm is tempered. I'm at ease with Edelman, Amendola, Hogan mainly because of Gronk and Bennett.

Keshawn Martin will play a bigger role in 2016.

You have to take into consideration that the Pats pass more than any other team in the league, and therefore have more injuries to WR/TE. We need more depth than most teams at WR.

*IF* Danny Amendola is cut as some hav4 suggested, he can start a new career building car-ports.

Ask again after we've seen the QB situation shake out a bit. Until then

Edelman = Lock
Hogan = Damn near a lock
Everyone else = hoping to make the team, some with more of a realistic hope than others

When I read about Mitchell's large hands and saw a video of him making a one handed catch, I thought I'd compare their measurables and they are quite similar.

Beckham
Height 5'11"
Weight 198
Arm length 32 3/4
Hand size 10
40 4.43
Vertical 38.5
Broad jump 122
3 cone 6.69

Mitchell
Height 6'
Weight 198
Arm length 32 5/8
Hand size 10.5
40 4.45
Vertical 36
Broad jump 129
3 cone 6.94

I'm not at all saying he's as good, but it's nice to see. Mitchell has not been described as being that fast, but 4.45 is certainly quite fast. I guess that means he doesn't play as fast as he tested. Then again that could also be because of his recovering knee injuries. He was a 5 star recruit and was described as having explosive speed when he first got to Georgia, but knee injuries derailed him. I'm wondering if he's still getting his speed and quickness back. I can't wait to see him play this summer and find out what we have with him.

couldnt have said it better myself

i continue to marvel at how belichick keeps it all together.....amazing

Please tell me the last rookie who spent his entire rookie year on IR and ended up being a major contributor.

Not many rookies have spent their entire rookie year on IR period. If you broaden it out just a little bit to try to get a meaningful sample size, Ben Watson has made a pretty good career for himself and he was on IR for almost his entire rookie year.

I do agree with your overall point, though: that the Pats will avoid IRing rookies if they can reasonably do so. That's a lot of development time (and 25% of the rookie contract) gone, pretty steep cost for the benefit of stashing a player and saving the roster spot.

It is really cool that they're as similar as they are, but it also has to be highlighted that Beckham had a crazy 3 cone time. Almost as good as Edelman's. And while 6.94 is perfectly adequate, 6.69 is a major, very significant improvement.

Just want to make sure to keep expectations in line, because if we start comparing Mitchell to Beckham now--even with the caveat that you gave--I don't see that ending well. IMO Jeremy Maclin is a good comp to start with. They're physically very similar, and if he develops as hoped I think that's the kind of player that Mitchell turns into.
