D'Brickashaw Ferguson retiring

I've lived in NYC since Ferguson was drafted and I've always admired him (with a first name like that, who couldn't like him!).

This is, of course, part of the fallout from the Revis contract...a contract to which the Patriots would not agree and about which they have now been proven right....

I don't really think it is about Revis. Wilk will most likely be traded and that'll free up 14mil. They were going to ask Brick to take a pay-cut regardless of Fitz. He has been a bit on the decline. Still a solid LT but not worth the 14mil cap hit himself.

Long, respectful thread on TheGangGreen.com. 200+ posts

The Jets ick up $9M in cap room, but will have to spend that on a replacement. A couple of guys are calling for the Jets to trade Revis to free up cap space to re-build the offensive line and pay Fitzpatrick. They are also worried that Nick Mangold may be at the end as well.

RB Matt Forte must be wondering why he signed up with the Green Beans!

The Jets have sucked at QB forever, but their offensive line has consistently been top shelf.

Ferguson will be missed

I think when Matt Forte looks at his paycheck he'll remember why he signed with the Rats, plus he'll have a longer offseason to spend it, what with not having to be concerned with those pesty playoffs.

That is probably a lot longer than the GangGreen thread discussing the blatant discrepancy between the Rats' and Chiefs' tampering penalties.

Sorry, that wasn't fair. I was trying to trick you.

There IS NO thread discussing that topic on GangGreen.

Must have slipped through the cracks somehow.

Damn, seems to be continuing a trend of players walking away while healthy and relatively young. Good for him, always glad to see someone be able to leave the game on their own terms.

Good player but like all things associated with New York sports, over-hyped. I remember him being tagged as being the "bowling ball with knives" right after he was drafted. He never lived up to his advance billing, IMHO.

Agree completely. The people calling him a bust are just demonstrating how little they know about football. You don't start every game for ten years, let alone at LT, and "suck."

I would tend to agree, but this is the Jets we're talking about.

True, but there are still jet players I give grudging respect to, Mangold being the best example, and while I don't consider Ferguson to be in that league he was still a quality starter for a decade. He's similar to Solder in that he wasn't dominant but wasn't a liability either.

I am still trying to find the person that actually called him a bust.

From a jester perspective he was a bust. . . . I mean he had 10 years, missed only one play, and he NEVER forced a fumble with his butt! Just a real stat poor performance. ;)

How Jet-like to have a guy achieve something incredible and damn near impossible - a long career without missing a snap - but blow it for him by trying a trick play. Only the Jests.

I still can't believe a fanbase would nickname themselves after a disgusting disease like gangrene.

I also can't believe the incredible irony in how appropriate that nickname actually is.

Unless they dump a ton of salary, they could never afford him and sign Fitz.
But aren't they getting cap freed up from losing Ferguson?

They're getting about 9 million. Signing Fitzpatrick and a top 20 pick will take up most of that savings.

Wow...

I know he was a Jet... but much respect.. that is the definition of reliability and consistency. You can't ask for more from an employee

Ferguson, 32, had been contemplating retirement since the team discussed the pay cut, according to sources. In the end, there were myriad factors for his choice to retire now, but know this: Ferguson would almost certainly have played on his scheduled salary. However, the realization that that was not practical — and significant pay cut was on the horizon — prompted him to consider the benefits of walking away.

So it apparently was, indeed, a GFY to the organization.....

Awesome.
