Dan Wetzel:NFL's missing data on air pressure is another black eye in deflate-gate saga

Actually I bet they were never recorded in the first place.
Oh, I'm sure they were. And if the numbers somehow hurt the Pats (which would be impossible scientifically, but the refs could have screwed up, obviously) they would have released them. But they didn't, and they won't.

From the sounds of it, they recorded measurements in such a way that the "before" and "after" readings would be done at the same temperature (let the balls warm up after being brought inside). That way if there were any difference it would signify that potentially air leaked or was let out, I guess?

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

For me, in not releasing the numbers, it still makes themselves look like fools. How can you defend the importance of a certain part of the game to the point of suspending the leagues best player, to only follow up with spot checks the following year? Basically, something that had never been taken seriously, returned to not being a serious topic.

The league can't stop stepping on their toes no matter what they are doing.

Aware the briefs have been filed and the issue has been framed, but can't Brady's attorneys request this information regarding the actual data???

No, because the information is irrelevant to the appeal, which is only about matters of law (and specifically the law as applied by Berman), not facts.

Now, if the 2nd Circuit panel finds against Brady and remands the case back to Berman for him to consider the grounds he didn't consider the first time around, then maybe the NFLPA could try to bring that in if it has bearing on the previously-unconsidered grounds.

I do not believe for a single second that these numbers are not recorded and stored somewhere in the NFL Office.
They're too smart for that. If those numbers were ever even taken and written on a piece of paper, you can bet they were never put in an email and that they are certainly not stored on NFL property or on an NFL data system, server or computer.

Maybe they're on Hillary's Server in Chappaqua! ;)

Great deal of difficulty in comprehending why this is so freaking difficult.. otoh if they favored Goodell and his belief they would have been released.

Simple. The Appeal is about the Commissioner's power under the CBA, not about the data. That is why they have a former Solicitor General as their Appellate Counsel and why I hope Steffen Johnson is the right guy to go toe-to-toe with him.

They want to make this a landmark case about the rights of management and are throwing the equivalent of a Hail Mary pass that they get two Second Circuit judges on the Panel who are sympathetic to that view, after the debacle they confronted after outsmarting themselves by rushing to get the original Case heard on their own turf and ending up with an old-line, Progressive Judge, put forth by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who tossed them out on their butts.

The NFL is more or less saying, even if the data were a complete fabrication, we still had the right to do what we did. Berman found that they erred in process (notification, etc), but his comments on the "investigation" itself into the data were sarcastic and of the nature of an "aside." (Berman could open the whole can of worms again if it gets sent back to him on the matters he left un-considered in his ruling, as, some have argued, a "time bomb.")

Much as I have always loved football and love the Patriots this sh.t has turned me off it more and more. I have now stopped watching all football other than actual Patriot games and will be cord cutting in the next few weeks. I'm really not sure how much more of Goodell and the NFL I can take?

Right on the money, as usual.

Nobody in fan bases outside NE cares. It's over. They and the Other 31 are ticked pink that the Pats got docked more draft picks (as they always bray, "But Kraft accepted it") and Brady (whom they envy and consequently hate) took a body blow to his reputation.
While I appreciate these editorials, they are a year too late.

I think they will ultimately help historically but make no difference right now. I'm hopeful the weight of the facts will become the narrative someday.

Facts - Shmacts... either way Bob turtles:

*RING...RING...*

Roger: "Hello..."

Bendover Bob: "Hello Mr. Commissioner sir- it's me Bendover Bob. Can I please make an insincere public statement to the fans about how the Patriots are upset with you for with holding this season's PSI data? I have to give the appearance that I have a set of plums. So may I please"?

Roger: "No".

Bendover Bob: "Ok sir, I deeply apologize for asking please accept my heartfelt gratitude for ... ".

Wait. In the Times story, Goodell is asked if he has seen the movie Concussion...and his answer was "He'd get around to it." He doesn't remember the last time he's gone to the movies.o_O

How in the world can the man NOT be lying? You mean to tell me he and a bunch of his cronies from the NFL haven't acquired a copy for themselves to review even before the thing came out in December?

A lying sack of douchebag he is.

For those of you saying that most people outside of New England don't care, you're right. However, there are plenty outside New England who do care. Because they see the fraud that Goodell is. I know plenty of fans who felt this was a sham to begin with.

I knew from day 1 that the NFL was never going to release the data if it supported the Patriots. I said as much. Even though it's unlikely to happen, this is grounds for Kraft to go after the picks that were taken.

The NFL may not have the data, but I guarantee the Referees still do. They keep a copy for themselves so all anyone has to do is subpoena the refs for the games that have been mentioned in which the measurements wee done. I saw a news article already that listed the games where the measurements were taken. And that includes the Pats/Chiefs game..

Did anyone else get the Alec Baldwin deflategate joke when loading this page?
Definitely a joke.

Glad to see the media picking this one up. Clearly hiding the data they committed to gather.
Anything stopping the media from simply checking balls themselves? How is no one doing this?
They wouldn't be game-used NFL balls, but you could approximate and test pretty easily.

I have no idea how credible it was, but I remember reading an article about the leagues PSI recordings and there was a rumor that the Vikings game had balls drop down to as low as 8.5 psi

Yes. Experts were predicting between 8.5 -9.0 PSI. The wind chill was the variable.

In the same paragraph he admits he went to see "The Intern" with his daughters.

I asked him if he had seen ‘‘Concussion,’’ the Will Smith film about the devastating toll of head injuries in N.F.L. players and the league’s complicity in either ignoring or covering up the problem. Goodell said he would get around to it. ‘‘I can’t tell you the last time I’ve been to a movie,’’ he told me, although in the next breath he said he had seen ‘‘The Intern,’’ starring Robert DeNiro, with his twin teenage daughters during the snowstorm the night before.
