How is the media not jumping on this opportunity to actually test balls?
Grab a dozen new balls, inflate to 12.5 at 70 degrees, and then check them after two hours.
Simple.

I would look for two things.
1 is average reading - do they follow the Ideal Gas Law? What is the difference between resting balls and balls kicked around?
2 is variation - are they all exactly at 10.5, say, or is there variation ball to ball?

The NFL doesn't have some magic access to inflated leather balls.

Just to piss the league off of knowing they'll be closely monitoring the balls after inspection, Id pump them with extremely hot air. Boom, significant pressure droop, the league looks extra foolish.

I'm optimistic. Goodell has promised more transparency in league matters. He's very focused on getting it right.

Clearly 1 person doesn't understand sarcasm lol

Why oh why doesn't any of the Pats local media do a pressure test and show it on their website? Are there too many Globe reporters out running paper routes that they can't buy a ball and a gauge, fill it to 12.5 inside, then set it outside and film the results? Either result they have a huge story...either the ball deflates and they have proof the NFL is dumb, or it doesn't deflate and they can yell from the roof tops "See Brady is a liar!".

It blows my mind they haven't done this yet, even as a ratings grab.

yeah...everybody for the most part is a doctor or lawyer or scientist or grad student on this board. Forgive me, but I'm going to be a tad profane..

I am a STREET scientist. I have a master's degree and a lifetime achievement award form the University of LIfe, Street Division. Do not pizz down my back and laugh in MY face telling me it's raining. Don't tell me I can trust YOU when you're trying to play the ol' shell game or 3 card Monty.

When I see a rich punk with every advantage that American life can possibly offer, when I see this ****ing punk telling me or anyone else to trust HIM and his "decisions", all the while, his entire life, a string of lies one bigger than the preceding one, vomiting forth from his mouth...when I see him surround himself with men of exactly the same ilk,the fortunate chosen ones from the same exact background..when I see Goodell, Kensil, Steve Bornstein, Brian Rolapp etc etc sitting there and SHYTTING on US every single day I get rather animated...and agitated..just LOOK at tHIS excerpt form this little scumbag Rolapp's bio, (Rolapp BTW is the one who has made it mission #1 to promote everything NFL for the exclusive benefit of "the 32")

Do any of you even have the first inkling that THIS little scumbag is running amok behind the scenes? "My fantasy job? Why, STARTING QB FOR THE NY JETS...Gaa Gaa Goony!!!"

This isn't about ball pressures or complicated legal issues or tests or any other sophisticated problems. This is EXACTLY about MEN with PROVEN interests in our chief geographical and philosophical adversary. the NEW YORK JETS, engaging in what can only and best be described as a corporate drive-by.

Now the feds HAVE to investigate and take down these scumbags and dismantle this repugnant NY Jet poisoned corporate structure, and return this league a fair and even enterprise. Period. It's THAT simple

What is Rolapp's exact job title?

I'm sure he is VP of something (there are 34 of them) but what?

ESPN, NFL Listed As Sources For Graphic On Weather Effects On Football - Including PSI

Unbelievable. People know that psi drops in cold weather now and yet, we still lost our draft picks. Kraft needs to hold the league accountable and bring a lawsuit on them so the media and public can refocus on the sham and injustice done to the Pats. He will lose the lawsuit but hopefully public perception helps to regain our picks.

I'm having a difficult time understanding this charade and an an even more difficult time understanding our lack of recourse. And now, we have the NFL & ESPN rubbing our noses in it with this PSA? This hoax (fraud really) being perpetrated by the NFL should not be allowed to stand. Dues, you’re a lawyer right? Is a class action lawsuit by Patriots fans not viable? What say we take a collection and put you on retainer?

I cannot believe we lost a 1st round draft pick to this garbage.

I can. This is Roger the dodger Goodell's league, after all.

How about this from the Seattle Times:

Seahawks brace for cold, hard truths about football in freezing Minnesota

Check that, they bring up the ball!

1. This chart is Bull Shyt and it shows how ignorant asses are still using the IGL incorrectly. The Ball pressure will NOT be at 11 psi at -13 degrees it WILL be BELOW 9 psi.

(These idiots continue to use pressure gauge readings rather than absolute readings)

2. The Wind chill factor is for living creatures and not a football. Yes the Wind will remove the heat from a football quicker but will not make the football colder. The purpose of wind chill is to let people know the effects of wind on their body temps during a cold day.

EDIT: I did not see @Dr Pain 's post.

I'm still convinced that the NFL will do one of two things. Either:

1) They release a bunch of measurements during offseason in which all of the balls are in legal range during every month of the year. In order to arrive at this, they measure balls only on sufficiently warm days.
2) They do what they did last time, and don't account for how long the balls have been indoors. Measure them on a cold day, Bring them inside for 10 minutes, then once they've been in for long enough they'll measure them then and use that as 'proof' that the Pats cheated.

I think 2 is the way they'll go. Lying by omission, misrepresenting facts, and creating misleading numbers seems to be their specialty.

I agree in that they'll do something cheesey but I think they would rather release numbers that indicate the pressure after the acclimation period which would show little deflation. They can then state that "it looks like certain teams got their message" or something similar.

Further, I think @JMC00 has shown how they are going to get the Pats this year and that is by manipulating the game through officiating.

From (How low will game balls' psi drop in frigid Seahawks-Vikes game?):

Ideal Gas Law causes the air pressure of a football to decrease in colder weather, a physics lesson the NFL inadvertently learned/taught last year when it punished the New England Patriotsafter the league claimed two staffers tampered with the game balls in the AFC championship game.

The franchise countered that the deflation of the balls was an act of nature, not subterfuge.

You were no doubt bored with the back-and-forth a long time ago.

Forget deflate-gate, Seattle is visiting Minnesota on Sunday afternoon and the weather forecast calls for temperatures to hover around zero. If so, it could rank as one of the 10 coldest games in NFL history. The wind chill is expected to hit between minus-15 and minus-20.

This could deliver the mother of all psi level drops.

The NFL requires balls to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch. The NFL's own internal investigation said footballs on the day of the AFC championship game in Foxborough, with temperatures in the low 50s, could naturally reach 11.32 psi. The lowest-recorded Pats football was either 10.5 or 10.9 depending on the measuring gauge used.

So how low should the air pressure go Sunday in the brutal chill of Minneapolis?

Try about 9.0 psi. Maybe even into the 8s.

"Ignoring the wind chill (meaning the following is a conservative estimate, meaning the wind chill could make the on-field ball pressure even lower), the on-field ball pressure will be about 9 psig (assuming it was pressurized to 12.5 psig at 70F and measured on-field at 0F)," Dr. Michael Naughton, the chair of the physics department at Boston College wrote to Yahoo Sports.

That's a low-pressure ball....

"The pressure will, unambiguously, drop several psi," Naughton wrote. "The game will be played with these 'illegal' balls."

Is there anyway to inflate the balls so much pregame that they can withstand the bitter cold and get to the NFL's preferred 12.5-13.5 psi?

"The only way to assure a game under such conditions is pressurize them to between 16.7 and 17.8 psig pregame," Naughton wrote.

Or in the parlance of Jim McNally … "a [expletive] balloon.""

- - - - -

Of course the NFL won't test the balls this weekend in Minnesota, will they? Because what will they do when they find both teams playing with footballs at 2-3 psi below the legal limit?

At what point will EVERYONE just finally say, you know what, this whole thing is just a colossal dump truck full of crap?

The Vikes get to use heaters though. Yeah, I know the VP Andrew Dice Blandino said it was wrong [wink wink] but there's no penalty, so why not?

I cannot believe we lost a 1st round draft pick to this garbage.

Every time I see a 2016 mock draft with only 31 picks my blood boils

Every time I see a 2016 mock draft with only 31 picks my blood boils

I know it won't and possible can't happen but would be hilarious if Bob Kraft asked for a a court to order an temporary injunction stopping the draft on that Thursday of the 1st round asking for his 1st round pick back at like 3pm of draft day. There by screwing up all 31 other teams, NFL network and ESPN draft coverage for the night
