Injuries and our roster - can we still win the Super Bowl?

Are you saying he will play through a broken foot if he re-breaks it when he finally takes the field? I'm gonna have to disagree there.

No, I'm saying he will play. If he is unfortunate enough to re-break it, then he obviously won't be on the field.

The person I was replying to questioned whether he would be on the field at all.

I wish I had as much certainty about things in life that you do; it would make it a lot easier.

At some point in the near future, Edelman will test the foot with straight pressure, then hard cuts and jumping. If it indicates that it has healed, he will give it a try on the field of play. If it indicates otherwise, he'll wait longer. None of us know:
1. when that test will be (this week, next, week after...??)
2. what the results need to be for him to play in a game
3. what will happen once he begins playing.

Based on what we've all read here about this injury, it is a tricky mother, and highly individualized to the player. It can be career ending if it continues to heal and break, heal and break.

Football fans like to think that toughness makes a big difference in these matters, and it doesn't. It is a little bit important, not a lot. For injuries like this, a "tough guy" attitude is actually the player's enemy. The fact that Edelman wants to play really badly is not to his benefit.

Let's just ignore that every single report has stated that he is progressing very well, and that he has a history of recovering quickly after injuries.

Actually, I think that's a good idea. Those reports aren't coming from the Patriots, Edelman, or his doctors because none of those people are going to talk about it with the press until he's on the field. I think they represent an echo chamber based on observations of him jogging and playing catch, and are driven by social media posts about fantasy football selections.

Even if for some reason protocol had been broken, and those reports were from a source with real knowledge, "progressing very well" at this point means that the swelling has gone down, his post-op pain is where it should be, there's no infection, and he's able to put straight-ahead pressure on it. It doesn't give an indication of how well the screw is adhering to bone and how strongly the bone is healing. Those things are discovered at the very end.

Look, I want him on the field and perfect for this playoff run as much as the next guy. Maybe he has healed and is ready to go. Fantastic! On the other hand, some athletes take three or four months for this injury/surgery, and it is very individualized. I don't want us to have a collective delusion out of hope. And I don't want him to ruin next year by pushing himself too early this year.

We can all Google "Jones fracture" and read about what goes into the rehab process like you just did. This doesn't really add anything, other than to underscore the fact there are a multitude of factors that go into it - which most of us know by now, given that it's been posted multiple times since he's been injured.

Some players heal faster than others. By all indications, Edelman is one of those players. I'm very confident that he will play, as should anyone who has followed him throughout his career. Whether he re-injures the same foot is another matter. But he will certainly play.

The Patriots cannot win the Super Bowl, but not because of the injuries, but because they only have one cornerback. Superbowl winner usually do not win with a porous secondary.

It is amazing that with each post you make you reach new levels of stupidity.

Nobody scares me on the AFC side of the puzzle. If the Pats get bodies back they should be fine.

The team that has my attention is the AZ Cardinals. They dismantled a playoff team at home while terrorizing the 2nd best QB in the game. They sacked the dude EIGHT times and brought two strip-sacks to pay dirt. Their WR corps is scary good. They are headed into the post-season hot.

I agree Arizona is scary good and appear to be healthy. Gotta hope they beat each other up in the NFC. Pats are going to have their hands full if facing them in the SB.

We've shown the mental toughness and grit, even in defeat, of our championship teams, and certainly similar to what BB reflected upon that he saw in KC last year.

I haven't shown mental toughness, I've been a total mess with all these injuries on Sunday lol :D

Belichick better spare me the 5 years or so he would take off my life and not put Edelman in as the punt returner unless its to fair catch the ball, i swear to god!

They lost their best defensive player two weeks ago.

I was dissapointed with the secondary against the jets even with McCourty and Chung missing. We have lousy depth. Richards' s awful. Leonard Johnson got picked on. The defense was pretty much vanilla. Curious to see how much nickel defense they played in that game

Or we could put in the best punt returner in the league, who is also dinged up anyway.
