All the discussion of WRs -- including by Brady -- assumes that Slater isn't a WR. The most ringing BB quote I can recall is milder, namely a nod to the fact that he rarely plays WR.

Now, Slater does play WR in a specialty kneeldown package, but that hardly counts. And he does get a rare snap at the position otherwise. So -- is Slater totally out of consideration as reserve WR? Does the answer depend on some of the injury issues he's been having?

My guess is that Slater has been practicing very little at WR. But in theory that could change ...

Depending on the injuries, Slater could be our #4 WR (used very little). To me, this is better than using a roster spot son a player that we have intention of throwing to.

Rather see White play wide out. Slater couldn't catch a pass if he had magnets for hands and the ball was a hunk of metal.

I'm okay with Slater playing WR, so long as we don't throw him a befuddling jump ball 35 yards down the field on a critical 3rd and 2. Which always seems to happen when he's out there. It's like Brady goes into the situation expecting the defense to completely disregard Slater in that situation, and even when he's not open he just chucks it up there like he's Randy Moss.

Remove that play, and I don't mind Slater being a warm body on the outside once in a while.

Slater is on his 8th season with the team.

He has 1 reception.

That should answer everything. He can't play WR.

Yep. Slater is a super-hard worker, a great leader, fast, strong, everything you look for in a player..he just can't catch the football. They gave up on early attempts to use him as a KR for the same reason.

If Lewis were healthy I'd absolutely favor playing Lewis and White together over a number of other WR possibilities.

They were working him as WR in preseason.

The only play I can remember him running a WR route was a go route. I don't recall that working out well.

At this point, I would take him over some dude off the street.

And yet I think he did KR in college.

Oh well -- you make a good case. Well, you and his 0.125 catch/season stat. :)

He can't catch, to the point that he couldn't break through as a WR even in 2013. If it didn't happen then, it's not going to now, and he's dealing with his own injuries anyway.

Jon Gruden thinks he can.
"Anytime Matt Slater is on the field the defense is on their heels."

Slater at WR? Hmmm, I wonder what pattern BB/JM will have him run? :)

I have no problem with Slater coming on for the hail mary situations and specifically drawn up gadgetry plays. Otherwise Slater is a valuable commodity doing exactly what he does and should focus on being the STs QB(captain).

Big names play STs on BB's team and there is a reason for that. Consider: if we had bad STs the last two weeks we probably lose to the Giants and we are closer to letting the Bills' game slip away. Hell, bad STs may mean last year's SB's Seahawk's final possession is a kneel down for them ((good STs is definitely contributing to our being the current stingiest defense in the NFL)).
While it is much much easier to replace a STs "QB", a good STs QB is still a valuable commodity. So let's let a guy off the practice squad-off the street (if needed) -- guys who do WR as a full time living -- perform the play to play WR duties. And if we can't get anything going on offense against Denver due to the dearth of good targets/production? Our good D and good STs should keep us in the game in order give us a shot at winning it in the late stages of the 4th quarter.
((exception: numerous in game injuries can mean almost anyone may be pressed into playing much more and anywhere on the field)).

Matthew Slater is better than Bryan Tymms. LoL

I supposed technically speaking he is capable of catching a pass but that has literally only happened once, which is the same number of passes Brady has caught

Nah... BB should try to kick the tires with Lloyd. I know he left us in a ****ty way, but we should try to tempt him from retirement. He is not too old. He will catch the ball at least. He will not need 10 people to carry him off the field with an ankle strain.
