Wow, I think everyone is surprised by this. Our top three corners from last year are gone. I'm wondering if we are going to be trading for or signing one although where can you find a good corner nowadays...very surprising though

I've got no issue with Arrington getting the axe. I've got an issue with Bob and Dave from accounting being the team's two best CBs.

This Jordan Richards better be the next Ed Reed to justify that pick

Never really liked Arrington, even though he is good at the slot(and there only)

4 Mil was too much for him IMO, if he's back on a cheaper deal i'd be fine.

The secondary is in shambles though, hope it surprises or gets better with a signing

They saved 790k
They have now 3.5kk in dead money
The vet min is 745k

So if hes back playing fot the vet minimum we will save 45k.. I do not see him coming back.

The real question is why we paid that much for him in the first place. His release is less surprising than the shockingly expensive contract he was signed up for.

This is a complete failure on the part of the Pats front office. They sign up this turn to an expensive contract. Bench him during the Superbowl for failing. And then release him from this expensive contract soon after and take dead-money hit on cap. Just stupid money management.

We all knew the limitations Arrington had before they signed him at $4m per year. And we were all shocked. Nothing has changed. Why release him now, except for admitting you made a mistake in extending him at that price. He hasn't regressed. He's just as medicore as he always was.

TY Hilton. Straight up shut him down.
No, he did not "straight up" shut him down. He had double team help with McCourty all game long.

That Arrington signing was a terrible overpayment as soon as it happened.

At the time of his signing Arrington was pretty greatly overpaid given that year the top tier corners all signed 1yr 5m contracts due to the poor market, that he turned into one of the better slot corners in the league in 2014 he actually had a pretty good value contract given that the top corners jumped to 12-16m range.

Im not disagreeing that he was terribly overpayed but he had less help than you think in that game and played well AT TIMES for this team. He was not perfect but he was not the terrible player you think he was.

I didn't say he was a terrible player, he was just way overpaid. Which is why he just got released.

You are vastly overstating the expected return on pikc $64.

I thought Kyle had a great game, but he was given a constant double by one of the best free safeties in the NFL.

It was quite controversial the moment it happend.

He carved a role for himself in the slot and was a good player there and only there.

I remember a few games he got burned resulting in a loss, that last 49ers game in Foxboro and the game against Carolina in the MNF. Both times we were getting back to the game and he got burnt, in both games a bucket of cold water in any hope. Ok the Carolina game had a controversial call in the end, anyway Arrington was serviceable, he was never clutch when needed and his performance in the SB was catastrophic, BB certainly evaluates his players on big games, he is not going to tolerate any choke.

Maybe they can set aside $100,000 from that $4 million and have a press conference where they let Revis know that if he can find a way to break his contract they'll make it worth his while.

Wink...wink...

In his 6 years with the team, Arrington made on average $2.2m per. Thats about right.

Hes not worth more than that.

The fact that he received a $7m signing bonus in 2013 still blows my mind.

scary.....maybe they will trade for joseph ( texans cb )??

...
Joseph is no longer a usable NFL corner and is probably worse than Arrington at this stage of his career. Smith of KC is probably a better choice.

Arrington was pretty good inside but awful outside. They've got plenty of guys on the roster currently; even if none of them are awesome CB1's, you'd have to think at least one can be serviceable as a slot corner for a lot less money. The hunt for a CB1 continues but Arrington certainly wasn't a piece of that puzzle.
Almost all of us talk about having a "Number 1" corner all the time (and you're right about Arrington not being part of that discussion), but I don't think Belichick looks at it that way at all. [Remember Ellis Hobbs? Ouch] I think he would rather have a solid, cohesive group, especially if we are changing the basic coverage scheme as is thought to be the case. Having Revis seemed awesome, but who knows--maybe in reality he was slightly overrated and Belichick saw enough of him getting burned on a key play or two to want to go back to coverages that don't rely so much on 10 to 20 million dollar men.

I really don't understand what Belichick is trying to do. Cutting Arrington makes no sense to me. He is cutting experience and depth for what? Has any team ever cut/lost their 3 starting CB and from a SB winning team! I guess it means they are going to have Richards play Arrington's position. That's the only thing I can think of that makes sense if they don't resign Arrington.
