Competency is determined by those discussing the person's competency.

Tagliabue did. He managed it much better.

Guys like Rozelle and Tagliabue dealt with the issues differently, even in public. You seem to have decided to ignore that.

Well, other than Goodell's start date, you really didn't provide any.

Deus, you're better than this. You're engaging in silly semantics which is way beneath you. What situations did Tagliabue have to face that even closely compared to what Goodell has dealt with?

The magnifying glass on Rozelle or Tagliabue does not even compare.

The argument is competency. The only people that determine it are the owners who would never allow the NFL to be put into the hands of an incompetent. Goodell's job is far from being in jeopardy.

But I am a fan of reason when it comes to judging someone's capabilities.

You are correct that you can never measure capabilities, but you certainly can analyze performance and Goodell doesn't fare well with the latter.

But my determination of competency is based upon the whether or not a person's body of work is viewed as successful or not by those who do measure and judge, the owners. By their actions or lack of, and his continued employment without threat of job loss tells me the owners approve of his level of competency.

I don't think that he should apologize for investigating. That's what the league should do if they get an accusation. Just as I think it was very wrong for people here to hate on Kravitz for reporting that the Pats was accused of deflating footballs, he is a reporter, so of course he should report stuff like that. But Goodell should apologize for the league leaking more information about this investigation than a 20 year old with a social media obsession does about their daily life.

I guessed you missed the part where Kravitz was actively trolling and insulting Patriot fans over the resulting ****storm of Deflategate. No, his Twitter account is not separate from the paper he writes for and it is not separate from him as a "professional" reporter. He doesn't get to play the I'm just doing my job card and then take to Twitter and taunt and troll Patriot fans for the results of his report.

For example:

Bob Kravitz @bkravitz
Pats fans: give up the fantasy. Your brilliant head coach is also a cheat. 11 of 12 balls deflated. Must be the ball boys fault right?

Bob Kravitz @bkravitz · Jan 22
Ok so how did those footballs magically deflate themselves? Suggestions?

Bob Kravitz @bkravitz · Jan 22
The equipment guy is either gonna get fired or drive a new land rover.

Bob Kravitz @bkravitz · Jan 22
He was charming enough but I don't believe Brady. Not in the least. He had to know.

Note: below he Tweets "something new for New England fans to read" and follows it up with his if Goodell has any integrity he will fire Belichick rant.

But the guy is just a hard working professional who just happened to "report" the news? Give me a break.

Is #RogerGoodell dumb or just playing dumb? He knows Kraft apology isn't 4 investigating. It's his office leaking like a diaper-less infant

Hes dumb but not that dumb.

At a high level he doesn't want the office of the commissioner to be perceived as the dominion of an owner. I get that. Hes struggling with his role and place in the universe.

All he needs to do is say, "Bob, the NFL office acted inappropriately and on behalf of them, I apologize for what they did to dent the Patriots brand. I will do my best to make sure this does not happen again.".

"When you hurt someone, say you are sorry."- Ross Perot

Not really, it means they don't feel pressured enough to fire him yet. You also ignore the potential possibility that the owners like having a scapegoat who keeps the spotlight from shining on them.

The fact that he hasn't been fired is not nearly as compelling as you believe it to be.

I'm not a fan of Goodell's. But I am a fan of reason when it comes to judging someone's capabilities. Questioning the guy's competence is stupid pettiness. I think he may have one of the most difficult jobs in business. Between dealing with some of the most passionate fans of any sport, the reach and power of today's media that hunt's for stories with staying power, the player's union and individually/collectively trying to keep 31 of the most arrogant, entitled and self important rich guys happy....it requires some measure of skill.

Oh yeah, ....it requires some measure of skill. I just don't see any evidence that he has any.

Look, I get your point. It's easy to sit back and criticize. But what actual skills or qualifications did this guy bring to the table other than having the good fortune to be born into a rich and powerful family?

No sh*t it's a tough, complicated job where you have to be mindful of politics. So give the job to Tyrion Lannister; not King Joffrey.

No I saw that, and that is a different thing. He should definitely apologize for those tweets that you mention. But I talk about his first report that there was an investigation. I saw a lot of people that thought Kravitz did the wrong thing just by writing about it in the first place. I don't think he did anything wrong about letting people know that there was an investigation under way. He did alot of things wrong after that.

August 8th, 2006 his tenure started. Competency is determined by the people who employ you. Add to that, no commissioner has ever had to operate in the current 24/7 news-media environment like Goodell. Hence, no commissioners actions have ever been under such a high level of scrutiny. Guys like Rozelle and even Tagliabue could much easier control or sweep potential black eyes for the league under the rug. But hey, facts are dumb.
By this standard Reinhard heydrich was extraordinarily competent when handling the administration of Czechoslovakia.

That could be the case. But if they just need a patsy, they could get one for a lot cheaper.

Heydrich was more popular with the Czech's than Goodell is with the NFL. Reinhard treated the people well, once he zapped a few agitators and got loads of productivity out of them. That was the reason they felt they had to get him; it had the Czech nation looking really bad.

Goodell is just a clown.

......or maybe I am a bad judge of competency.

Let's just put it down as a difference of opinion, and enjoy the weekend, shall we?

Tyrion would do a FAR better job than Goodell

Comparing the #2 in the SS to Goody is over the top. Goodness...

There is an enormous difference between a martyr and a shield. Plus, I never once said that was his only function.

Investigations shouldn't leak until they are resolved. Not fair for the teams to take heat for something they may or may not have done.

Not that a defamation suit would ever actually come out of this, but these tweets look like evidence of "actual malice."
