Patriots Select Malcom Brown DT Texas With 32nd Pick

Steve Balestrieri

The Patriots select Malcom Brown with the 32nd pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Brown is a big defensive tackle who can stuff the run and push the pocket.

It begs the question why was he still available at #32?

It begs the question why was he still available at #32?

Because 31 other teams didn't pick him. I am very worried because all put together, they've won more than twice as many SBs as the Pats in the last 15 years :)

Jesis. Now we're calling it a reach when we pick a guy we thought would be gone by the time we picked.

The Saints made 2 questionable picks, the Colts blew their pick and there were another few questionable picks fit wise, but good players. In the end we got great value getting Malcom at #32, I saw a B+ grade for us but I can't see why that was not an A.

probably because they thought it wasn't the greatest need pick-someone who was rated much higher slid to the pats and they grabbed him but there are certainly other positions where more help is needed. that's why a B+ instead of an A......

I was feeling pretty good until I woke up and saw Kiper has us as a big winner. Ugh.

The Patriots have a void up the middle in that defense after the departure of Vince Wilfork. I'm not sure you can do better than getting my No. 2 defensive tackle in the draft, and my No. 12 overall player, in Malcom Brown at No. 32. Yeah, he's got room to grow, but I said on the air I thought this was the best value selection in Round 1. When you hit a need with that kind of value, you have to be feeling pretty good.

He's doomed...

I woke up, saw that pick, read his overview, and was pleased. That's a very solid pick, low-risk/high value, fills a real need, (arguably) the best player available at 32, and someone who should be playing downs as a rookie.

I definitely have to go back and watch some more of him. Brown, Williams, and Shelton were the three DT's that I paid the least attention to as I didn't anticipate any of them being available when we picked.

Either way, he's a Patriot now, so I wish him all the success in the world.

Malcolm Brown is not Wilfork's replacement at his size just yet. Having Branch and Siliga at the nose in 2015 with Easley, Sheard, Chris Jones, Ninkovich and Chandler Jones is a terrific mix of size, speed, and experience.

Malcolm Brown's addition also strengthens the linebacker group as Sheard and Ninkovich will be able to line up at OLB or drop into coverage from the 4-3 when called for.

The defensive fronts of all four AFC East teams are dominant. Look for the division to kick some serious ass outside the division.

IMO, the other positions where more help was clearly needed: LG and LS. CB and WR were comparable needs, but the top talent at those positions was long gone.

Assuming nobody's interested in a round-1 long snapper, that leaves us with Brown vs. an LG. Your LG options were workmanlike A.J. Cann, light but athletic conversion projects Clemmings and Fisher, or "not a suspect" La'el Collins. Personally, I'd take Brown over any of them.

Umm - Let's see. Pats send old DT to Texas - Texas sends new DT to Pats! Nice trade.:)

The Pats get a real young NT/DT since Brown left UT as a junior.

Stout vs the run and can collapse the pocket.

That describes Vince in his early to middle years to a T.
