Was the coin toss botched at SB?

For what it's worth, we have now LOST the coin toss in all 4 SB victories (Rams, Panthers, Eagles, Seahawks).

Out of the 8 SB's played, we actually only won it twice (both losses--Packers/Giants 2nd time).

Well, duh!
Obviously we cheated to be sure we lost the toss. Belichick personally deflated one side of the coin so the Pats would know how it was going to land.
Do I have to explain everything to you people?

It's kinda dumb how that whole process works wouldn't it be simpler to just choose to kick and automatically have the other team kick after the half? Guess it isn't needed so to speak but the other ways seems unnecessary.

The Seahawks didn't say "they want to kick" or "they want to receive". They deferred giving the Patriots the offer to kick or receive and the Pats chose to receive (notice how the Ref turns towards the Patriots and asks them if they want the ball). The Seahawks then got to decide which goal to defend.

I don't know why the Pats did not choose to kick but, apparently, if they had done so they would have kicked at the start of the second half as well (from what I have read somewhere).

I actually remember reading about a college game recently where a team deferred and the other team chose to kick (I think this is how it went down). The team that chose to kick also had to kick in the second half as well so they lost both possessions.

I'm just really confused on this whole coin toss/deferring thing. Hopefully someone here has more knowledge and can better explain and possibly correct anything I've said that is wrong.

EDIT: Here is a small article on the College game where the team had to kick in both the first and second halfs....

As you mention; the reason a team, when the kickoff is deferred, will not opt to kick the ball to the opposing team is because that opposing team then gets to choose if they want the ball in the second half or not. So you are effectively giving the opposition two possessions...one at the start of each half.

I love deferring. One game I did a bit of a Belichick and opted to defer. We kicked off to start the first half and our offence did nothing all half. Fortunately neither did theirs. So I felt we stood a better chance pinning them deep on a kickoff and letting them go 3 & out as opposed to us.

Almost worked. They didn't score on us until there was two minutes left in the game. Unfortunately our offense still didn't score and we lost anyway!

CointossGate leads to DeferGate leads to WindGate leads to KickoffGate.

And I thought football wasn't a complicated sport. :)

It's because the NFL rules are like the IRS rules, they're both so cumbersome they barely make sense anymore. It's why something which any random person can see clearly as a catch, in fact, isn't a catch according to NFL rules.

When you defer you are deferring the choice.

Seattle deferred the choice to the second half at which time they would, obviously, choose the ball.

You don't defer the ball, you defer the choice so if the other team defers you have to take the ball unless you want to kick off both halves.
Way too clear and concise. You do not have a future with ESPN or NFL Network.

After learning the truth here is my message to the NFL:

I'm sorry to have wasted all your time...

It helps the national economy by keeping those scores of officials employed as well as the journalists who the NFL should charge a fee per controversy.
