Peter King's August 2014 take, and now

People need to stop comparing Edelman to Welker. I know it is natural because he turned into Brady's goto guy like Welker was, but as a player, Edelman is far more like Deion Branch. He is a better version of Branch, but his skill set and how he is used is more like Branch than Welker.

Some of the comments in here are embarrassing. I love JE as much as anyone and was touting him early. But some of you that dismiss WW as some slot guy and JE some superior player are way off.

Whatever, I get the JE homerism but as mentioned WW is and will always be in the discussion of greatest WR to ever play. He is borderline HOF material.

Also, as several posters have mentioned WW was UNSTOPPABLE when the other team KNEW TB was going to WW. The guy was incredible and came though in the SB several times and in all the playoffs that got us there.

Yes that drop hurt him and it was not a perfect throw but lets not write off how great WW is because JE has been such a great player for us. Are we that insecure that we need to diminish WW to make Jules look better?

I thought we were above that.

Again WW did all his "juking" in the slot. Line both guys outside, Welker couldn't carry Edelman's jock.

Edelman plays EVERYWHERE. Welker is just a slot guy.
Edelman is not an outside receiver. You are overstating his role in the overall scheme of this offense. Different players.

Welker of 2009/2010 was uncoverable.

I love Jules and he's the absolute heartbeat of the offense, but let's not re-write history.

I was a big Welker fan before we got him & when he was here but I clearly prefer The Squirrel who is uncover able in BIG games w/o having a Moss on the field and makes clutch catch after catch for the win.

Astute observation by Rob above that Edelman is used more like The Twig than WWW.

What people are overlooking in this comparison is that Brady can make any slot receiver have great stats. Starting with Troy Brown, a clutch player, to WW and now Edelman, they all put up approximately the same numbers of 100 catches and 1000 yards. Edelman has had two such seasons and if he keeps playing with Brady he will match WW. Keep in mind that WW was a good not great player with the Fins before coming here and now is a shadow with the Broncos, hardly the credentials of a HOF player. BB knew his value in the final contract negotiations even if he and his agent didn't.

I dont understand all this wes welker hate here. Sure I wished he had made that catch but the guy was mostly our offense.
I wanna see edelman put up more 1000 yards season before i can say he is better then welker was when he was here.

Stats are overrated. Give me production when it matters most. Edelman is money!

No, but I've seen them both play and the choice is obvious.

Two time all pro, five time pro-bowler, borderline HoFer or 0-time pro bowler, 0-time all-pro.

It's a pretty laughable comparison. Edelman is clearly the better punt returner, though.

If we go by how many pro bowls players have as the standard, than Manning has more PB than Brady, which would make him the better player. We all know that's false.

Welker won't even sniff the HOF. What are you smoking and why aren't you sharing????

The August piece was written by Greg Bedard not Peter King.

Dude, come on. By your standards David Patten was a better WR than Randy Moss.

Just stop already. We all love Jules.

There's no WW hate here. Its just Welker fan boys trying to put him in a higher pedestal than he really deserves.

Welker production here was AMAZING. There's no question about that. By far greatest slot WR to play the game, but he's not the standard for WR's. He was a perfect fit for this offense at that time. His route running, head movements, catching the ball in stride, and his timing with Brady was incredible, but his time here is over, and he's been replaced.

I think Edelman is better. My opinion. He more than likely will never catch up to Welker's stats, but I don't care about that. Edelman is money, and he unlike Welker now has the silverware to prove it.

Neither guy will make the PF HOF, but I can see both wearing red jackets one day. And FTR, I'd still probably take Troy Brown over both of them....

Who's comparing Patten to Moss?

.
No, its more homerism than WW fan boys here.

Is Jules better than Randy Moss?

Who's comparing Patten to Moss?

By your comments, guys who came though in the clutch in big games trump guys who were consistently the best at what they did throughout their careers.

Who is being a homer?

I don't get it. So hasn't Edelman proven with the same opportunity that he can duplicate Welker's stats and come thru in the clutch?

Your making it seem like Edelman not a 100catch, 1000 yard receiver.

On the Wes vs Jules arguement.

When Welker was here, he was great! Probably the best slot receiver and the player that similar players try to be. Jules isn't trying to be that player. Jules can play out wide or in the slot. Can run a shallow route or run a deep route.

Everyone though they thought Jules would replace WW, he has developed into his own receiver. I ****ing love Jules. He is a Patriot through and through, hip hurting? I'll break some ankles and catch a Superbowl winning TD.
