ESPN: 11 of 12 footballs under inflated by 2 pounds of air.

Question for you guys. What if a team wanted to have under-inflated balls and found a way to fill the balls with air such that the pressure was a valid 12.5 psi before the game and dropped to 10.5 psi by half-time, and there was no tampering with the balls after the referees inspected them?

Is that creative, or is that cheating? Specific examples follow.

1) What if instead of room temperature, the Patriots fill the empty skins with hot air (or in a very hot room) just prior to handing them off to the official. The leather does not get hot, but the hot air expands and increases the pressure significantly. The balls are measured to be 12.7 psi at 2.5 hours before the game. In actuality, the balls only have enough air for 11.5 psi under regular indoor conditions, and with the cold weather, the ball drops to 10.5 psi by half-time 5 hours later (2 psi below the minimum). Is this creative? Or it is cheating?

2) What if the Patriots do the opposite, and refrigerate the balls (or apply a coating that prevents the leather from stretching). They inflate them with very warm air. The leather is not fully stretched at the time, and the pressure is 12.7 psi exactly 2.5 hours before the game. In actuality, the balls only have enough air for 11.5 psi under regular indoor conditions, and drop to 10.5 psi by half-time 5 hours later (2psi below the minimum) as the leather expands and the temperature drops. Is this creative? Or is it cheating?

Maybe you do not care if the patriots are tied to cheating but I do.

Then get used to it because it seems blatantly obvious that the Patriots manipulated the balls in some manner. I personally don't see much of a discrepancy between the comfort you are trying to attain with scuffing and scratching the ball or by lowering the PSI, but when I floated that idea on a national board they chastised me for not recognizing that PSI throws off the offense/defense balance more than scuffing does.

Either way, whatever -gate opposing fans what to use has permanently been put on the table. It was possible a win in two weeks could have wiped the slate clean, but that is fantasy now. Win or lose, the hue and cry will start anew.

What really frustrates me is that this was supposed to be the SB that quieted the haters. I realize the haters will never stop hating because that's what haters do but they would have lost their number one fall back that they always use against the patriots which is "Haven't won a SB since spygate". After this SB those haters would no longer have been able to say that.. And don't you tell me you weren't looking forward to shoving that in their faces.....Well, now they have deflate gate to fall back on now. IF this is all true, of course.

No, you are assuming that both the Patriots and the Colts balls were filled to the same level of PSI to begin with. They could have been up to 1 psi apart. Additionally (as already discussed) it depends on what temperature the air was that filled the balls. There are two unknows that make this far from a slam dunk. Maybe the Pats have a practice of using warm air to fill balls pre-inspection.

Exactly, and its sad that Patriot fans aren't taking the time out to learn the basics of the physics involved.

Yes, all of us can do that even if we don't have the math expertise to plug in and run the numbers. The concepts involved are extremely simple ones.

Do you honestly think there exists a winning team in the NFL that cannot be tied to cheating in some way?

I'm sure there is at least one player on every team taking some kind of illegal substance.

we can probably stop acting like this will just go away and we will be exonerated.this is a big deal, fair or not
originally thats what i thought. Now its just ********

I'm sure there is at least one player on every team taking some kind of illegal substance.

We live in an era where sports mired in illegal substance abuse, salary cap violations, intentional injury, player tampering, and many, many other forms of cheating are a way of life. There is so much money involved in these games that the people involved are incented to cut every corner they think they can get away with cutting. And Belichick is no different.

If you are looking for a squeeky clean sport, well, good luck with that. Heck, even little league sports end up with scandals on winning teams.

Normally I would agree with this stance but in this case its not just what OTHER people think its what I think as well. I do not want my team tied to cheating. It annoys me as a fan that I have to deal with this. I shouldn't have to deal with this. I do not agree with the notion that cheating is ok as long as you win by enough points or as long as its not that big of a deal in your own opinion.

I also don't agree with blaming other people IF infact the patriots did break the rules. If they did break the rules its not ok just because other people might do it too. Since when has that ever been an ok stance to take? If the patriots did break the rules the only blame should be on the patriots themselves. Instead of the SB being the sole focus right now, we are now talking about another patriots cheating scandal.

I exceed the speed limit often when driving....no big deal as long as it's not 20mph over the limit.

We're talking about ball pressure and so far, no proof about anyone being responsible. If they can't nail the person, then I'm 100% fine with it. and even if the ballboy deflated them, I'm ok with that too. In all likelihood, Brady has told him how much pressure he wants in the ball...just like Rodgers does. And I'm 100% ok with too.

This isn't anything earth-shattering....lighten up and stop being a Debbie-downer.

Don't lose any sleep over this or allow it to effect your job performance folks!

It's not a big deal even if you've convinced yourself that it is....

I can't wear my Pats hat this week. That's a real shame. Depending on how this shakes out I may give up the season tickets over this. Why support a team that is at the center of jokes and disdain from even the casual sports fan? It's supposed to be fun. Remember when it was not this serious? Remember when we were the underdog? I don't find all the negativity just or unjust to be worth the aggravation anymore.

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.....

What a co-inky-dink this was brought up RIGHT BEFORE THE SUPER BOWL! Man, it feels like Deja Vu all over again, don't it folks?!!

This is agenda-driven, nothing more. Why haven't the Colts won more super bowls in the past 15 years? The New England Patriots....that's the answer. fug em all.....

Feel free to hand those tickets over to me.

I'm predicting no ruling until after the super bowl. The investigation will be complete in the next few days, but the ruling will be after the super bowl.

Florio and King (who are haters and who also are league suckups, especially King) have said exactly that.
