2) (less likely in my opinion)---The NFL finds us guilty, takes away a mid round draft pick, and fines both the team and Belichick. Horrible scenario.
As I'm a pessimist, I would take (2) right now. I have worse fears that they'll find us guilty of something and suspend BB as a "repeat offender". Not to worry anyone, I'm a severe pessimist, but anything that doesn't result in a suspension or the loss of a #1 or #2 pick is OK with me right now.

Not trying to be negative, so apologies--but my deepest concern is that one of two scenarios will play out:

1) (more likely in my opinion)---The NFL will find that no clear cut evidence exists of the team doing anything wrong, however will still adhere to the 25,000 fine due to it being "the responsibility of the home team to provide balls that are inflated to the proper size."

The media headlines will read "NFL finds Patriots guilty, fines them 25, 000."

Remember that Goodell stated that spygate did not give us a competitive advantage, but who outside of N.England remembers anything close to that? No one.

If the balls were approved by the refs and due to cold weather become slightly underinflated how is that finable? Pats did furnish appropriate balls. It's up to the refs to keep them properly inflated.

If Brady likes them at 12.5 and they are filled and tested at 70 degrees then what happens to the psi at 45 degrees? It's by definition too low. But by how much.

According to you, some others, and common sense---it's possible.

According to the now popular physics professor at Boston College---it's not possible.

In the eyes of fans of 31 other teams, we are already guilty. Nothing will change that.

I try to be as much of a realist as possible, but end up towards the area of concern.

I suppose after the way spygate was handled, some can understand my worry. I don't have too much confidence in the NFL for doing the right thing, or else it wouldn't even be a current issue.

That physics professor said 2/3 of the air had been removed. He's basing that on what? Such a ball would be flat as a pancake. I think 2/3 of his brain is missing.

Peter King was on the air today, and he talked about this. He noted a time when he was on the road with the refs for a story. The refs weren't giving the balls to the team ball boys until about 2 minutes before the start of the game.

So all the league has to do is look at the sideline cameras for 1/2 of football, and then interview the ball boys. Anything strange could quickly have been followed up. This could have been finished around 9:00 am - 10:00 am on Monday.

I agree with you. He didn't seem to be too realistic with his examples. They seemed to be rather extreme from what I read.

I agree. But as long as we win the super bowl, they can take all our draft picks away. I wouldn't care.

The most interesting thing to see will actually be the league's response should they discover that nothing untoward did happen (and my gut reaction is that this "scandal" is BS and at worst NE had the balls at 12.5), because it does need to make a strong statement against baseless claims against opponents. Plus the NFL would then have to turn around and hand the league MVP award to A-Aron Rodgers who is on record saying he likes the ball with more air - as much as (gasp!) 14(!!) psi.

To this point this isn't even based on "we found an underinflated ball (or balls) below the minimum requirement" - It's just that someone thinks at least one ball had less air than others usually do. Maybe. And maybe that's below the 12.5 number. It's insane.

If they find that the Patriots violated some rule here, I think the punishment should simply be to give Indy's 2nd or 3rd round pick to NE. That prevents the Colts from trading the pick for a ****ty RB (positive for Colts). I would guess depending on their response or comments in the media regarding this several teams are being set up to have the game balls tested at multiple points during the game by BB next year while they get smoked on round 2 of the FU Road Show.

So let's look back at the last two times that the Patriots were the subject of media scorn this year...

-After the KC game, the infamous Dilfer "they're just not good anymore!" line, a week of questions about Brady's declining skills: they get mad, destroy the Bengals

-After the Baltimore game, Harbaugh cries "DECEPTION!", media spends a week saying Pats broke the rules: they get mad, destroy the Colts

What do you think will be the result this time, friends?

Yep- 90% of the time the 2-3 days that Troy Vincent mentions in spent on PR spin and NFL brand beautification.

Yeah. When I'm being cynical/paranoid I worry about the same thing. Especially when Florio's quote of a "source" said that any findings and consequences would be released some time after the game. (And while Troy Vincent says they expect to get things "wrapped up" this week, he did not ever say they'd release the results this week). One reason (and remember, I said I'm being paranoid here) the NFL might want to delay releasing findings until after the game is that they already have real evidence NE did mess with the balls and if the findings come out before the game, they're worried they'll be forced by media and public reaction to suspend BB and Brady for the game (with the year Goodell has had he's in no position to resist), which would result in a completely non-competitive game, which neither the NFL nor NBC wants. (I include Brady because the only reason NE would be messing with the balls would be because Brady wanted them at a certain pressure).

Like I said, I freely admit that's paranoid. And also unlikely. Though if on Thursday or Friday they say the investigation is complete but don't release the results within a day or two, I'm going to start weakening the "un" on "unlikely".

I think the much greater concern in all of this for Patriot fans is that while they are investigating the crime of a ball being underinflated they discover the true crime, La Garret Blount's untucked socks, which while still covering most of the calf are not properly tucked, and a Professor from Northwestern has weighed in to inform us that the LFI index calculating his loss of friction led to .000000639 PPII rating that have him a huge advantage over Colt defenders

Hopefully they don't detect the IMproper tucking protocol infractions because that will destroy the legacy Belichick, Brady, and the Krafts have achieved. Whomever is in charge of uniform compliance,I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL FOREVER.

Don't forget " OMG THE REF PUSHED HIGHTOWER OUT OF AN ILLEGAL POSITION!!!!" thing when they blocked the Jets FG too.

It took Dean Blandino showing video of it happening in like 5 other games to sort that one out.

You're fcuking nuts!

Whether you end up being right or wrong (obviously hope you're way off)--this post is pretty much the "anti-Xanax" that I am currently looking for ;)

If the league had any evidence at all that the Pats messed with the ball, it would be all over the internet by now. Something like that would not be kept quiet in this day and age of twitter, etc.

Use Gay-Lussac's law

P1T2=P2T1 where P is pressure and T is Temp (in Kelvin)

P1 = 12.5
T1 = 70 degrees or 294 kelvin
P2 = X
T2 = 45 degrees or 280 kelvin

12.5 x 280 = P2 x 294
or
(12.5 x 280) / 294 = P2 = ~11.777 psi

I certainly hope I'm way off!! ("anti-Xanax" -- I like that. You're looking to be made more anxious instead of less? :) )
