Wes Welker

hope he retires.

Great servant to the team but his actions since have done little to endear him imo.

He's made for life. time to hang up the cleats and go enjoy it.
so close to that ring in Indy. such a shame.

I think on his best catch yesterday he went down on purpose before the Colts defenders could hit him.

The announcers said nothing about it.
I bet he's been instructed (or put the limitation on himself even) that if you have the first down and you don't have an open field in front of you, go down rather than try to be a hero or risk another hit on the head. It was sad to see it end that way for him, if that's what's going to be. I still love Wes and will welcome him back to the Pats (as a Pats HOF candidate) if he chooses to come. I thought it was a mistake to let him go and rely on Edelman. After one year, it looked like maybe I was right, but thereafter, BB proved me wrong again. I guess that is why he's the coach and I am not. I wonder how much (if at all) Wes regrets going to Denver...

I agree with this, some of his comments in Denver were way out of line, especially the ones about Belichick not respecting other teams and players.

interesting comment someone made earlier.

I don't think Welker is within an asses roar of making the HOF. thats probably down to his low TD count.
890 receptions, just under 10,000 yards and 50 td's. Not sure that gets it done. I think he's a cert for Pats HOF though. and justifiably so. But then that also raises the question. Does Randy get to join too. over 50 td's in a little under 4 years.

you would think so.

The guy was a true 'gamer' for us. The Little Engine that Could. The little guy who wasn't afraid to roam in the land of the big guys even before they started instituting all of these player safety rules and regulations. Welker deserves to be remembered well by Pats nation. He was far to productive for us to let some late career decisions taint his legacy.

My three cents:
1) I wish the Pats had been able to hold onto him, but "In BB I trust."
2) In moving to the Broncos, he did what he perceived was in his own self-interest. Whether he was right or wrong about that, is not for me to decide. That was his decision to make.
3) I found it painful to watch him play yesterday and, like others in this thread, wish he had retired at or before the beginning of this season.

I said he put up HOF numbers in NE in response to illegal contact comparing him to Sergio Brown, but overall his career doesn't get him to the Hall IMO.

Welker was a favorite of mine when he played for the Pats. I wish him well and hope he makes the correct choice for his health and retire now. For me I will always think of him as a Patriot.

He has been terrible this year and is done. It was incredibly sad to see him out there getting 2 catches a game then disappearing for the rest of it. He was slow and still dropped a ton of passes. Manning had little faith in him towards the end of the year. Hope he realizes it's time to hang them up.

As a Patriot I loved Wes and really did want him back. But I would not trade the end result for anything. Edelman has been a revelation and though he may not be as gaudy as Welker was when he was here, he has emerged as one of my favorites and I'm glad he was given the opportunity to do so with Welker's departure.

I think Welker could have had a much better game and was open a bit but Manning didn't look at him. Getting down was a smart thing to do and I think he should continue to do so if he wants to play next year.

I don't think Welker sniffs the HOF either, he was simply not good enough for long enough.

I don't have animosity towards him for leaving so I don't consider him a traitor. I just think he's a dipshit for the crap he talked about Belichick after leaving. You would think he would have more gratitude for the man who plucked him from obscurity and turned him into a star.

I will also never forgive him for dropping that pass in Super Bowl 46. Rightly or Wrongly, whether it was a tough catch or not, we would have won if he caught that pass. He's right up there with Asante Samuel for not stepping up when it mattered most. I know the team had plenty of other chances, but that is the play that I will remember as being the moment it slipped away.

I wasn't sad to see him leave. As usual, Belichick was right.

Welker really does need to retie..once he went to denver after that concussion..was never the same and just looks awkward out there

I think that's more so because of his gigantic helmet.

He went down to preserve time on the clock. I think there was less than 1 minute left in the game and there were 3 guys waiting for him. In my OP, he did the right thing for his team.

Wes won't make the HOF, although that says more about the ridiculous backlog of wide receivers that aren't in the hall (if it takes world changers like Chris Carter and Tim Brown years to get in, what chances does Wes have).

But in a sense, he is simply the greatest player at his position in the history of the game. When you think of slot wr's, you think of Wes Welker. Just a completely invaluable player, and a great NE Patriot.

He should still be a Pats hof when it's all said and done. It'd be blasphemy for him to not to be.

If he was doing the right thing to preserve time, why didn't he try to make his way to the sidelines rather than running towards three defenders and giving himself up? The clock doesn't stop when you surrender yourself in the middle of the field.

So I gather the consensus is... sign the beast?
