it's march once again and also in germany people are doing mock drafts. like every year we have our (in germany) famous nfl-talk.net mock draft on our message board. every team is represented by a poster or a group of posters, trades are allowed, but only with 2007 picks, players and future picks may not be involved in a trade. though i'm a packerfan i took the patriots like every year ;)

here comes what i've done so far.

i packaged the patriots picks #24, #28 and #128 and got #20, #51 and #82. i know this trade won't happen in real, but without the possibility to throw future picks or players it's difficult to get realistic trade scenarios.

with the 20th pick of the 2007 draft the new england patriots selected darrelle revis, cornerback, university of pittsburgh.

some comments on my pick:
at the beginning, i would have taken a shot at laron landry at #9 or patrick willis at #16 (trades were almost negotiated), but both players went off board shortly before. so i had leon hall and darrelle revis in my mind for #24. hall was picked with 18 and i got nervous with giants, broncos and cowboys picking right before me and in need of a cb. in my opinion the value at the end of the first round was not there, so i traded up for the best player available and got rid of #28 . every player on my list would have been a reach at #28 so i better added a second and a third.

after the only alternative for me at #24 was picked by the cowboys at #22, i was very happy about my uptrade ;)

what do you think about the move and the pick? do you like it or am i fired as pats gm? :D

i'll give you an overview of our draft until now:

Looks like the right pick to me! Pretty good-looking draft all around, despite the wild trading.

I like some of this, but tell whomever gave the Cowboys Michael Griffin at 22nd overall, he's a little off. They just signed Ken Hamlin to play FS next to Roy Williams at SS, and they already have two decent backups, so they don't likely need another Safety.

Don't your colleagues know that they shouldn't encourage PATSNUTme?

I like BB trading number 28 to a fifth to Tampa for their two 2's. At 24 they take Puz, at 35 they take somebody like Daymeion Hughes and at 64 they take Tony Hunt.

i expected the cowboys to take a corner, too, but the boys signed hamlin only to a one year deal and i think this one year is hamlins whole time in dallas. so it´s not that stupid as it looks like on the first view.

@ctpatsfan77

the niners-fo is run by 3 guys and all three were sold on willis at #11 ;)

I also think that the pick is justified.
First of all Roy Williams has been a disappointment.
Secondly Hamlin is signed to a 1 year prove it deal, so he's not guaranteed to stay in Dallas longterm.
Now it may be argued that Griffin is a reach at 22, but he's still one of the top 4 safeties and I believe most of the other safeties had already gone off the board.

GG I don't mind landing Revis. Looks like talent was getting thin and it's better to start the run at corner than to be the one picking at the end of the run on corners.
For your 2nd rounder are you thinking linebacker, safety, or bpa?

Roy Williams has been dissapointing in deep coverage, but he's good at the LOS. Dallas signed Hamlin to a one year deal, but as I said they have Watkins (who started part of last season, and Keith Davis who was also a part time starter. Also, Anthony Henry can play FS, and he might be moved there next year. The Cowboys thought about switching Henry to FS this season, but signed Hamlin instead. If anything Dallas might go Safety in the third or fourth, but going Safety in the first would be a dumb pick in my opinion, especially reaching for Griffin. The Cowboys had more interest in Meriweather, anyways.

Gilbert,

Well done, you did very well with that selection, and with the trade. That would be a sweet deal if the Pats made those same moves in the draft.

How do you have "needs" for the Pats structured this season?

thank you for your compliment, nice to hear that from a draft specialist like you.

one need is adressed with my bpa on board, mr. revis ;) with the safeties and linebacker aging, i think these are 2 targets i would think about in the next rounds. but if there is a player on a not-special-need-position with very good value, when it' s time to pick for the pats, i will take him. that' s a very fine situation, bill belichick put me in as pats' gm :D all starter positions are set and i'm very flexible in going best player available.

Sounds good, I like seeing how you were viewing the Pats from your Packers' perspective. You did well last year and no question this mock got off to a fine start. I'll not lobby too hard for anybody, but when you get down to the sixth round take a look at Auburn LB Will Herring as a potential SS.

i'm sorry, but my work as patriots gm normally ends after 4 rounds. the other 3 rounds are done by a few guys with great college knowledgement.

by the time 4 more guys have left the board, the saints traded up to the chiefs and selected cb aaron ross, the giants picked lb lawrence timmons, the jets og justin blalock and the eagles took lb jon beason. man, it was funny to see all the eagles fans booohing on the cowboys-gm to take griffin from texas :D :D also very interesting to see lynch, olson and ginn falling in unknown spaces

due to the confusion the boys pick has created here, i'll translate the reasons from his statement (word by word ;) ):

"griffin was my number 1-target from the beginning - alternatively one from the quintet meacham, bowe, downtrade-ross, jarrett, ginn. a nelson or meriweather were never a thought for me. that the jaguars will grab nelson was clear at the beginning, i was only worried, when the patriots tradet up.

griffin is a top 15 player for me and consequently the best player available at this point. the scoting report sounds like griffin being the manning of the defense: "Smart, instinctive field general who made the secondary calls … Alert to blocking schemes and does a decent job adjusting on checks at the line … Takes plays from the chalkboard to the field with no problems....Has a very good understanding of the pre-snap movement in the backfield, doing a nice job of lining up his teammates to counteract those moves"

he is very good in coverage and is able to cover a receiver 1-1. the same impression i got from griffin in the games i saw him and that were not only a few. hamlin has only a one year deal and i don' t think he is the long term solution for the cowboays and williams will never learn how to cover.

griffin can play fs and ss (he is better at free safety, though) and gives the cowboys new tactical possibilities. perhaps in passing down situations griffin and hamlin can play safety with williams lined up as a linebacker.

in my opinion need and talent fits perfectly for the cowboys.

alternatively there was ross, but he had a few question marks and lived from his athletic abilities in colledge. it will be much harder for him to play in the nfl at this level. but i think henry will look much better with a good safety behind him. a wr was also a possibility with glenn being a year-to-year desicion and owens a day-to-day one ;) "

Interesting Draft. It would not surprise me if there is a lot of movement amongst teams this year in round 1.

As I said though, he forgets the cowboys just drafted a Safety last year, have another young Safety in Keith Davis, and could move Anthony Henry to FS next season, since they already thought about it this year. Drafting a better CB would allow him one year in the system before taking over full time at starting CB, when Henry moves to FS next year.

Where's Lynch? He'd be tempting as BPA.

Sebman's got the Cowboys pegged. They like Watkins. Henry's a fallback. Hamlin's the man this year. JJ has said that Henry can't seem to handle the toll of being an everydown corner for 16 weeks.

They'll draft CB, LT or WR in the first to replace Henry, Flozell Adams, or Terry Glenn in 2008.

Mind updating the mock draft and showing who has been picked since?

Ich gratuliere Euch noch einmal. Es ist doch schwierig, so viel in einer Fremdsprache zu forschen und analysieren.

Hopefully that reads as I want it to, which is to congratulate them for their hard work in putting together a draft, having to do the research in a foreign language. The picks were really interesting as well. There seems to be quite a run on corners.

Gilbert, would you have taken Dwayne Bowe for the Packers?

sebman posted the thread were all picks were made (thank you for that), but if you wish, i'll give you an update from time to time.

very good german without any mistake and exactly that, what you wanted to say. great effort :) american football is our greatest hobby, so it isn't a problem to read all that stuff in english. a nice side effect is, that we can improve our english. not to bad while working for an american company :p

i think run on corners is like every year. it' s hard to find a shutdown corner so teams reach for a potential one often. this years cornerback-class is not the best one, in other years the first cornerback is off board much earlier than #18.

the bowe pick for the packers ... i can't blame magic (the packers-gm) on that. the position is not the one i would have adressed, but if wr, i was glad he picked bowe (imo the #2 wr of this class after calvin johnson). i would have hated a potential ted ginn pick, because it's awful to see brett throwing in triple coverage because he mind see ted ginn open. i would have prefered a downtrade and then safety michael griffin. the packers need an upgrade over marquand manuel for sure. with woodsen and harris aging, i wouldn't have have minded a cornerback either, as long as it's not chris houston. since ahmad "highway 28" carroll i don't like grabbing up corners from arkansas.

i couldn't blame the packers gm for either player, he has proven, that he has a nose for good players in 2006, when he had a pretty darn good draft:

rd 1 (#5) de mario williams
rd 2 (#36) lb demeco ryans
rd 3 (#67) s danieal manning
rd 4 (#104) te tony scheffler
rd 5 (#139) rb leon washington
rd 6 (#165) g chris kuper
rd 7 (#237) wr marques colston

pretty solid, isn't it? :D
