Ben Volin wrote an article today interviewing Dr. Lonnie Paulos (the doctor who repaired Carson Palmer's ACL tear). Here are some exerpts:

“They’re betting the odds and I would too. They wouldn’t have taken him if his knees didn’t feel stable,” Paulos told the Globe in a phone interview Friday.

Paulos, who helped Andrews establish the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Pensacola, Fla., said it is likely Easley underwent a bone-tendon-bone graft, the same procedure used to repair Tom Brady’s torn ACL, done by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

With a BTB graft, a hole is drilled in both the femur and the tibia, and a strip of the patella tendon is harvested with bone attached on each end in place of the ACL.

According to Paulos, the BTB graft is the procedure most used to repair ACLs for NFL players because of its quick recovery time. If a player injures just his ACL and has a BTB graft, the consensus is that he can return in 4-6 months.

The return is slightly delayed if there is additional damage, such as a meniscus tear, which prolongs the period of being on crutches.

“It’s a popular graft because it’s extremely fast to heal,” Paulos said. “You can start some rehab by three weeks, get on the bike or get in a pool, and start working the quads and hamstrings faster than other graft choices out there.”

“If you look at re-tears after a BTB, even in the NFL and college sports, the probability is between 10 and 15 percent, it’s quite low,” Paulos said.

My fear isn't that he tears them again, its

1. Probably has a short nfl career
2. he'll wear down as the season goes.. Anytime you have surgery, esp when you are young, its not a good thing..

HOpe I'm wrong and I dont hate the pick.> But coming back in the 2nd round and getting a QB instead of double dipping is my issue.. We might have two players in the draft who dont' contribute.. I look at what the other teams did in our division.. Buffalo and Jets are really only a QB away from winning the division, esp Buffalo..

Why would you say he'll have a short career?

Having surgery when young suggests a better chance of full recovery than when older.

QB and coach.

Bills are perennial losers.

Jets got a good thumper at Safety, but that's the only immediate impact I see there.

TE?
They went 1-1 with previous crap.

1. Don't know where you get that from. ACL repairs are almost routine now.
2. Every rookie wears down (the rookie wall), but why would he more than anyone else? Many college players have surgeries.

The Bills mortgaged their future (a 1 and a 4 next year, then a conditional four for a back-up RB) to get Watkins. Then they traded Stevie Johnson. While Watkins likely will eventually be better than Johnson, Johnson was pretty damned good. Other than that, they didn't impress.

The Jets? Pryor might be good, but I'd rather have Easley. And they lost their best corner. I don't see the Jets as any better than last year - solid middle-of-the-pack team. Good lines, so they'll stay competitive.

Their draft was unimpressive.

People forget that Frank Gore blew out both his ACLs in college and he has been one of the most durable RBs in the league. He has played nine seasons and never missed more than two games in a season other than one season where he missed five games. He has also gotten over 1,000 yards seven of his nine seasons.

He has never had a major injury in the Pros even though he had the same question marks coming into the league that Easley has.

All the medical proof needed will be Felger's assessment, so tune in tomorrow, maybe he will even have Borges stop by to share some pearls of wisdom. ;););)

Felger loved the Easley pick. He thinks the injury history is overrated.

The good news about all of this is that Easley won't be expected to be a full time contributor right away. We have veterans in Wilfork and Kelly, and if they're sluggish due to their own injuries, we still have Siliga and Jones who (while not ideal) we know can fill in for short terms. If Easley can be a short snap rotational guy early, then take over a more prominent role by week 10-12, he should be rebuilt, refreshed, and ready to give us some good push for a playoff run.

jets fans are ridiculous. reading their board, theyre such homers. they love all of their picks. lol

Damn it. You beat me to it. I was going to say Frank Gore says hi.
