I watched this game at a local watering hole that offers $5 large pizzas during Pats games. It draws a rowdy crowd and has a great atmosphere to watch a game. This one was fun. So its 1:30 am. I've watched all the post game shows, the last 3 minutes of the Bruins game, and skimmed the site. I'm wide awake and here are my random thoughts on this game.

Defense

1.Not to toot my own horn (right ;) ), but pre game I felt that Jamie Collins on Fleener was the best match up, and it turned out to be right on the money. Talk about having a break out game. 6 tackles, one sack, 3 QB hits, 2 tackles behind the LOS, 2 pass defensed, and a pick. Now that is a full game at all 3 levels of play.

BB was very patient with this kid and it took most of the season for him to come to the fore. But this kid could be just what the LB corps needed. Great speed, freakish athleticism, surprising versatility, and a great attitude, and when he came to the Pats, he had no role. Now he does. He's our wild card. He's the opposing D's worst nightmare and our plug in match up problem. He is the kind of talent who make DC's love to come to work, especially if you are set up to run week to week defenses. You can't expect this kind of production every week now, but he certainly makes next year look really exciting.

2.I watched Chandler Jones very closely this game. He had no sacks, but had a few hurries and hits. He could never get around the LT and often was run past the QB. Surprisingly, his best move was a straight bull rush. There were a number of times when he walked the T right back into Luck's face. I thought it was impressive since I think he has room to get stronger. I wish he had used it more often. Jones still isn't good enough to get by a decent OT one on one too often.

That being said, Jones is an excellent all round player, who sets the edge well and is good against the run, and while he might never lead the league in sacks, I wouldn't be surprised if he averaged double digits for his career here. He has a great motor, and OC's have to account for him. After Wilfolk. Mayo and McCourty, he's the next cornerstone player and will likely be a captain soon.

BTW- IIRC I think he had more success on the rush when the Pats put him inside a few plays. He's good now, but I think his best years are still ahead of him

3.Pretty cool that our fill in, no name DT's each had a sack. Yes I know some will say Velano's was a trip, but I think the reason the refs didn't throw the flag was that Joe never stuck his foot out, Luck simply tripped over his foot while he was engaged with a blocker. BTW- I think that was Chris Jones' 7th sack. If at the start of the season I told you we'd have a DT with 6 or 7 sacks, we'd have all thought we had died and gone to heaven.

In fact think about this, including this playoff game. Cjones has 7, Velano has 3, Siliga has 3, Tommy Kelly had 2.5, and even Supoaga has 1. That's16.5 sacks from our inside rushers. Who've thunk it was possible.

4.Over all the pass rush was pretty effective. While there were “only” 3 sacks, Luck must have gotten hit around 15 times or more, including one that should have drawn a flag

5.While I watched Luck close the gap every time the Pats took a 2 score lead, it was clear to me that the Colts only moved the ball when he made simply perfect throws, like the first TD to Brazill. He made several very difficult throws over the course of the game, but I always felt that these throws were so difficult that he wouldn't be able to do it throughout the game. That eventually he'd be just a little off and these great throws would become picks...and they did. They actually should have picked Luck off 5 times. There was that time when McCourty and Dennard ended up defending each other and dropping a pick early in the game.

6.For the most part I thought the secondary played very well. It was very rare that anyone was running free in the secondary. Most of the time, Luck's completions had to be perfect throws against decent to good coverages. In fact the only 2 completions that pissed me off, were the key 3rd down and long completion to #17, just prior to the first Brazil TD. Arrington was there to defend it, but seemed not to know where the receiver was. The other was Brazil's 2nd TD over McCourty, who simply lost his cushion. This play tarnished an other wise solid performance by Devon.

7.This secondary is so much better with a healthy Dennard on the outside. You could really see the difference. I'm almost tempted to use a Ty Law comparison, or a mini-Ty Law comparision. He's very physical, has good ball skills, a nose for the ball, and is a good man to man cover guy. He had excellent position on the first Colt TD, the ball was simply perfectly thrown and the receiver made the catch, despite Dennard's hands right on his arm. You shouldn't blame the DB on those kinds of passes, rather you should tip your cap to the QB and WR (Like THAT's ever going to happen ;) )

8.Steve Gregory disappointed many Pats fans here, by having a very solid and clean game. He had a couple of pass defenses and 6 tackles with no misses. What are the haters ever going to do now.

9.Giving up only 80 odd yds on the ground was more than one should expect of our depleted front 7. Especially when that includes only 5 yds from Luck. The challenge will only get tougher moving forward, but so far so good.

OFFENSE

10.I'll start with the 2 things that pissed me off. The biggest thing was the fact we totally botched the end of the first half......TWICE. The first time was when we had about 3 minutes, and looked like we might be able to go up by 3 scores with a TD drive, and we didn't seem to care. We ran the ball twice for 5 yds, called TO after each run and then threw a bad pass, and gave the ball back to Luck with over 2 minutes left in the half. I felt the team should have been more aggressive and opened up the offense a bit at that point.

But at least I would have respected the decision to run the ball, and run out the clock and take the ball to start the 2nd half, if not agreed with it. BUT WE DIDN'T do either. We weren't aggressive AND we didn't run out the clock. And then when we got the ball back with 1:15, left, we weren't aggressive again and ended up with nothing to show for the end of the half, except an unnecessary, but very good series by the Defense to keep it at a 2 score lead. But other than that, Josh had a game plan in mind and stuck with it and was amply rewarded.

The 2nd thing was on that 3rd and 2 when we gave Devlin the ball into the teeth of the Colt defense and were forced to punt for the 2nd time at the start of the 3rd quarter. It just didn't seem like a good choice, given the success BOTH Ridley and Blount had been having.

11.Blount is a guy who hammers teams, but is scary good when he reaches the 2nd level. Ridley is a razor who slashes at defenses. It's a great combination, and one that will travel well if we have to go on the road to Denver. The ground and pound Patriots. Who'da thunk.

This is a complete change of philosophy from what we started the season as. Hell, its been a complete change of philosophy starting 5 games ago when Gronk went out. Can you think of another team that had to make such a drastic change of offensive focus so late in the season, and STILL made it to a conference final?

12.Mankins play today will make it tougher to cut his big contract, because it truly was at a pro bowl level. Solder almost matched it. But while the OL will get most of the praise for the success of the running game, as well it should. I was REALLY impressed with the work of Hooman, Devlin and Matthew Slater.

Yes I said Matthew Slater. The Pats used him at WR a lot in running situations, and Matthew made is HOF Olman daddy proud with several good blocks. Hooman and Devlin were also affective most of the time against defenses that were clearly stacked against the run.

13 Over 400 yds of total offense, and over 40 points is a decent night, even if it didn't match the sexy passing game we are used to seeing. But this is what our offense has evolved into. We are the ground and pound Patriots, and until Dobson comes back or Thompson can remain healthy, its what we HAVE to be. With no TE or outside WR threat, we are pretty much very limited in the passing game. So this is who we have to be until Gronk comes back and Dobson and Thompkins reach some semblance of health.

Special Teams

14.OY! This was not the special teams finest moment....by far. Not only did we have the bad snap fiasco, which luckily only cost us 2 points instead of 7, but unluckily cost us our punter. Add that to the 3 blocking in the back penalties, and Julian's rather strange punt returning, and it was pretty ugly for special teams last night.

If we lose Allen to injury, is Zoltan Metsko available or is he still under contract with the Bengals. If not, I think he'd be the best short term choice, most importantly because he was a great holder for Gotkowski.

15. BTW- here's a thought. Why don't teams when they get the chance to KO from the 50, ever pooch kick it to about the 10 and force the receiving team to return it against a coverage team that has only a 40 yd sprint to reach the ball. If you kicked it high enough the coverage team would almost be on top the receiving team. Chances of a turn over would multiply, as well as the likelihood that the opposition would start inside their own 20. Seems like a waste of an opportunity to simply kick it through the endzone, and allow the opposition to start at the 20. Just a thought.

The Colts

16.Luck's the real deal. He'll get better, and that's a scary thought. The Pats scouted him well, and trapped him a few times. He also needs a better run game. There is just too much pressure on Luck to carry that team. Its too early for him to do it in the Playoffs. This early in Brady's career he wasn't required to do as much as Luck is being forced to do. So for now BB has his number, but that can change.

17. TY Hilton still had over 100 receiving yds and a spectacular catch to his credit. He's a good one, and with a healthy Reggie Wayne will make a formidable WR pair for the Colts next season. Whalen and Brazill will add good depth as well. I thought both played well tonight. Like the Pats the Colts need some help on the DL in the coming off season,
General

18.My biggest concerns are on offense going forward. It concerns me that we are essentially down to 2 slot guys and a RB as our only receiving threats, so we better be able to run the damned ball. but more on that for next week's opponent.

19.This is our 3rd trip to the AFCCG in a row, and the EIGHTH of Tom Brady's career. If its Denver, we will be an underdog. Against the Niners OR Hawks, we will be huge underdogs....and rightfully so. Getting this far has been quite an accomplishment. We should be very proud of this team. At this point I have no expectations. Its all gravy.

20.It must be very scary for the rest of the league, and unbelievably frustrating for Jet fans to realize that ours is the 2nd youngest team in the league. It has reached its 3rd consecutive AFCCG, and regardless of what happens in the draft or FA, will be adding at least 4 players with multiple probowls to their ranks. No other team in the league will get that kind of talent infusion this off season

Well now its 3 and I'll not so wide awake so I's stop here. Hope you enjoy it, and it fills some time before Sunday's game. I just hope that ESPN doesn't float some negative Pats rumor again, and everyone flocks to that thread.

Good post per usual. I can't fall asleep myself. ST had a rough night for sure but I will say that I am glad that blunder on the punt happened the way it did. Those plays rarely happen so hopefully we got that one out of our system and Allen learned not to make such a mistake in a similar situation. Hoping he will be alright and back for the AFCCG.

Good post, we have come to expect this...

Thought Chandler Jones was concerned about the edge as Luck can run the ball, so that slowed him down... he was noticeable and as time passes he seems to be getting stronger....

Love how they have let Jamie Collins develop, as well as his skillset... this is a rare find, to find someone as athletic and quick as he is... good things are coming.

I share your concern for the lack of offensive weapons, Thompkins went down and that might be the end of season for him... we are lacking pass receivers and it will be a challenge to develop a game plan that includes a heavy dose of passing...

Ryan Allen may be done, and this does not help a very dismal special team showing last night.. Brady holding on anything is a scary sight.

I can't give a good analysis of your post, PatFanKen.

But I enjoyed it a lot.

Rosario's in Canton had the best prime rib. And the bar had tvs, too bad they got greedy by moving to Norwood.

Good work, as always.

Two points:

No Gronk: I kept thinking about how much Brady and McDaniels or BOB focused on getting the ball to Gronk at less than 100% in years past. Last night without him they went all in with who they had who could produce. In a weird way, they're better off with no Gronk than 70% of a Gronk.

Interior Defensive Line: Jones, Vellano and Siliga did great last night against the Colts running game. Losing Wilfork, Mayo and Kelly in weeks 4,5,6 gave these guys a chance to develop in real time. My hat is off to Patricia, Belichick and Patrick Graham, defensive line coach of the Patriots who I had to look up just now and had never heard of - great coaching job: New England Patriots: Patrick Graham

Ronnie Brown was a minor factor in the game, and Trent Richardson has no burst whatsoever when he gets the ball.

In fact think about this, including this playoff game. Cjones has 7, Velano has 3, Siliga has 3, Tommy Kelly had 2.5, and even Supoaga has 1. That's16.5 sacks from our inside rushers. Who've thunk it was possible.

Plus the sacks from Chandler Jones or Carter lining up inside.

8.Steve Gregory disappointed many Pats fans here, by having a very solid and clean game. He had a couple of pass defenses and 6 tackles with no misses. What are the haters ever going to do now.

One of the long completions was on him, IMO. (I forget which now, but I noted it in the game thread.) He had the underneath/inside part of double coverage, and slowed down -- perhaps due to incorrectly judging the pass as underthrown -- thus letting the receiver get separation.

If we lose Allen to injury, is Zoltan Metsko available or is he still under contract with the Bengals. If not, I think he'd be the best short term choice, most importantly because he was a great holder for Gotkowski.

Re Mesko -- he was on the roster for the game in which they were eliminated, and I think that means he's done for the season.

Good point on the KOs. Another possibility would be an onside kick, on the theory that it would only cost you 20 yards of field position if it failed.

Outstanding win highlighting on D our physical CBs, and terrific play by Hightower and (the coming out party of) Jamie Collins. The tweak: too many long balls over the top. Each DB was victimized and that's probably too many against an offense like Denver's. There is room for improvement against the big play and they are certainly capable.

On offense, many of us have been wishing week in and week out since forever that they would take the ground game seriously, and all of a sudden here it is, big and in your face. Perhaps nothing more important to playoff success than the ability to run the ball consistently. Unfortunately, this transition occurred mostly out of necessity as the passing game, with injuries to Gronk, Dobson, Thompkins and Amendola (now limited by his groin to a supporting role), has withered on the vine. Now the imbalance is tilted in the other direction. Is it sustainable? Moving forward, Dobson (in a boot with what could be insufficient time to heal a stress fracture) and Thompkins (no catches last week with a bad hip and now a possible concussion) are question marks. Hopefully, one or both can return, but expecting much on Sunday may be wishful thinking. They need to be more efficient with what they have now, and one guy who I think could be better utilized is Vereen (33 combined yards vs Colts). He has shown he can be a play maker and we need someone else to prevent defenses from stacking the LOS.

Agenda this week: one final twist on the big play faucet, and review the video of Vereen catching 12 for 153 against the Browns a month ago. Punters report to Gillette at 8:00 AM sharp.

All week, the mediots were ball washing Luck as the next QB well on his journey to Canton. I have no problem letting the hype machine do its thing getting all pumped and jacked...yada yada.
But....lets take away the name Luck for a second and call him Quarterback A. Quarterback A has tossed 7 picks in the last 8 days. Calling that Sanchezian would be an insult to Sanchez. In 3 playoff games, Quarterback A is 1-2 with 8 picks.
Over in Cincy, they are questioning the long term viability of Dalton after his two picks last week. One guy is the goat and the other is the future GOAT......funny how that works. Then we see Cutler get $50+ mill guaranteed after another Jeckyl/Hyde season. I guess I just didn't know the definition of "great" includes the term "high interception rate in win or go home contests." Damn you Merriam Webster.

Next.....I will be attending church today followed by confession. Among the topics to be discussed with Father Joe in the booth will be my lack of faith in Lagarette Blount. I can already hear Father Joe tell me my skepticism was actually a lack of faith toward His Holiness, BB.....and that is a mortal sin. Father Joe may instruct me to perform penance on PatsFans.....so understand the forces at work if you find a thread filled with Hail Belichicks and Our Coaches.

Lastly....my vision of a more runcentric Pats offense that didn't have to lean on Brady, especially in his twilight years, has come to fruition. The pass till you drop former offense was an exciting style of football and almost was the perfect formula for success...but alas...closies only count in horseshoes and hand grenades. Today....I'm gettin that 2004 sort of clock killin Corey Dillon feeling. Now if only McDaniels will work the play-action more now that a run-first style has been established. I'll tell Father Joe this and hopefully he can get a coded 'prayer' to His Holiness via the internal communication network run by ArchBishop Ernie out of Gillette.

Great points, as always PFK!

Since KO's are kicked off the ground, you can only kick them so high, because you can't really get your foot under the ball. But it'd be great strategy if you could.

As an aside, were there any injuries tonight other than Allen?

Nice post as usual, Ken.

I'll add one thing to what you said vis-a-vis the botched punt snap and resulting Safety.

I've watched that play several times and I can't pin any fault on Ryan. Despite what the announcers said, he wasn't trying to lateral or toss the ball. When the defenders got to him, he was trying to control the ball, and the way he was hit by two players ( I didn't take note of their names) forced the ball up high where it knobled against his faceguard.

His arms were constricted and the defender to Ryan's right side pushes the ball up and out with his helmet.

As it turned out, that same hit which pushes up the ball also goes square into Ryan's right shoulder, which is where the injury came from.

All in all, I'm not blaming Ryan for how things turned out. I'm hoping he's alright and it's likely that he will be for next weekend. If he can't go, then I agree that the Patriots ought to approach Mesko about signing on for the balance of the season.

The fellow I DO feel sorry for is the long snapper, Danny Aiken. He won't get cut, but he's certainly going to get an earful from everyone from BB on down.

Andy Dalton is just like Andrew Luck...except without all the talent. Maybe the media crowned him prematurely, but the fact is he carried a bad defense and mediocre skill players to the second round of the playoffs in his second year after turning a 2-14 team into a playoff team in his rookie year. By contrast, Dalton couldn't get a great defense and great skill players out of the first round in his 3d year. Like any young player, Luck is going to make mistakes, but I think you would have to be blind not to see that Luck is on the road to greatness.

Anyone know why Mallet wasn't holding after Allen went down? It was surreal watching Brady hold. I'll never forget the look in his eyes while Ghost walked him through it. I hope Brady plays at a high level till he's 50. Appreciate watching him now folks. He is in the twilight of his career. I hope he gets at least 2 more before he's done.

Jamie Collins has come a long way from the guy who looked lost earlier in the season. I knew he was fast and could cover, but I didn't realize how powerful he is and how well he comes off blocks. If this kid stays healthy, he's going to be very special.

Ghost effin rocks. He had some nice punts.

It is truly amazing how such a young team has dealt with, and overcome, so much adversity. The seasoning that this mentally tough, young team has had this year will serve as a great foundation for years to come. The BB/Caserio duo has been outstanding.

Awesome experience, loved being there. We had a blast. Gillette got LOUD. I hate to say this because of his 4 INTs but Luck is no joke. Made a few throws that left our entire section speechless. Put a team around him and yikes, look out. But for now it's another AFC Championship game for the Pats!

Chandler is looking like a Willie McGinest here.

Good posts. Couple things...

--Agree on the Develin run. It seems that no OC can resist trying a fullback run in a key spot if a fullback is playing. Luckily it was only once.

It was an excellent offensive gameplan overall (obviously). Except for the throws with an empty backfield--did anyone keep track of those? Did that ever work?

--Good point on Edelman's punt returns, which weren't quite up to his standards. Seemed that he was so anxious to break one he got a little "cut back" happy.

--Thought the same thing on booming the kickoff through the end zone after a penalty. Feels like there might be another option there. The thing is, kickoffs go for touchbacks so regularly anyway, it's almost like giving the team who commits the penalty a free shot on the conversion. Don't like it. On the flip side, any other play on the kickoff does give the receiving team a chance at a return, and you'd feel pretty dumb if they had a big return in that scenario. Not sure what the answer is.

Ryan should never have picked up the ball. The correct play was to kick the ball out of the endzone and take the safety. By picking the ball up, he did prevent a possible immediate TD, but the ball would have ended up on the 2. The only excuse I can think of was that he didn't realize how close to the endzone he was, and that's not a great excuse.

OT- I have a rules question that's been bothering me since that play. What is the rule on a safety, because it wasn't Ryan that carried the ball into the endzone. It was a Colts defender, who punched the ball from the field of play out of the endzone. For a second I thought they were going to give the ball to the Pats on the 20, first and 10. It was my understanding that it was only a safety if the offensive team brought the ball into the endzone. This never happened.

It wasn't a big deal at the time, because I was thrilled we escaped that situation with the Colts getting only 2 points, but the more I thought on it, the more I'd like to know more about the call.

As to the Aiken miss-snap, the best thing you can say about it was, "man that was a rocket going back there". The damned thing traveled almost 50 yds. Seriously, I'm guessing that the rain played a factor in this to some degree. And I agree he won't get cut, but I'm guessing there is a 2 strike rule for long snappers, and that was #1 for Aiken.

Great points, as always PFK!

But they aren't kicked off the ground, but off elevated tees. Kickers do have some wiggle room and much like punting, they can choose to drive the ball with less elevation and more distance, or go for hang time and less distance. Of course its not as easy, even with the tee, but these guys are professionals, and I've seen it before.

So why did we punt on the Colts 26? I still am not quite understanding that one other than a. weather or b. we just didn't see the need for 3 more points with 2 minutes to go?
