Why I'm A Fan Of Marquice Cole

Opinion noted.

I'll just side with the greatest coach in NFL history - someone who has broken down film since he was 8 years old:

Patriots? Marquice Cole excels at backing people up - Sports - The Boston Globe

"“He’s an experienced player,” Belichick said. “He has good experience both outside, inside and actually even at safety as well. He’s smart, a real versatile player that has good speed, good toughness for his size. He’s not the biggest guy, but he plays with good playing strength and toughness, runs well.

“He understands all the different positions, the components of them and how to utilize his help because he understands where it’s coming from, based on his experience.”

Many a defensive back will tell you that practice is vital to refine footwork and technique, and any time away can lead to some rust.

But most of the time, Belichick noted, Cole has had to play cornerback in a game without the benefit of practice snaps, and he’s responded to the challenge.

“He learns quickly and he’s a pretty instinctive player. Just a lot of times we’ve thrown him in there the last couple years without maybe a lot of practice reps, somebody has gotten hurt during a game or whatever, and he goes in there and has just done a good job,” Belichick said. “I think he’s a valuable guy to have; he’s helped us out a lot.”

1 Play. 1 TD allowed. That was Cole for today.

Really? Reliable and ready?? Guess you missed the game today. 1 play. 1 opposing TD. That is why Cole should not be out there. Ever.

You addressing that to Belichick who spoke those words?

One play.

Enjoy your victory dance.

You going to cut Gostkowski also?

So I guess you believe Belichick when he says so and so ''is a great team and does a lot of things well'' when said team is 2-9?

That's a ridiculous comparison.

Belichick doesn't choose which teams play in the NFL.

He chooses the roster of the New England Patriots.

He's not Steve Spurrier. He's not going to say the team they are playing this week is a lousy team. Sorry, if that disappoints you.

Not really. You want us to take him at face value about Cole, then you should believe all of these terrible teams are actually really good at everything. The truth is, he's full of it in both situations. The 2-9 team is 2-9 because they stink, and Cole just isn't a good player. It's okay if you like him, I like Ridley even though I pray he doesn't fumble on every attempt.

If you think the two situations are analogous, then I cannot help you.

Belichick controls the Patriots roster and can drop a player anytime. He has no veto control over other NFL teams.

If you expect him to be Steve Spurrier at a press conference, then all I can do is encourage you to read and learn as much as possible about Bill Belichick.

Welcome to the board!

I'm not a Cole fan, but Cole was in good position on the coverage and made the mistake of playing the ball instead of making the tackle. The more egregious error on that play was Gregory's Meriweatherian angle. Cole trusted his help and it backfired.

Cole just tweeted that when the Pats get back into Boston tonight, that he will be buying pizza for all the kids who show up at Chucky Cheese in Waltham.

Dont spoil your appetite.

Gotta love when people have to grasp at straws by changing the topic. We're not talking about Gostkowski. We're talking about Cole. Who sucked today. Not just the pass play, but he was invisible on special teams as well.

Victory dance? Get over yourself. Cole's screw-up led to this team being down.

How could Gregory's angle be at issue when Cole didn't make the play to begin with? It was COLE's angle that was off. If you think he was in great position to make the play then you clearly don't know what being in great position means because Cole wasn't CLOSE to being able to make a play on the ball. And it was HIS futile lunge that changed Wallace's angle and allowed him to avoid Gregory. But, yeah, blame it on Gregory because Cole couldn't cover a wet blanket, never mind an NFL receiver.

I hope nobody shows up tonight at the Chucky Cheese in Waltham.

Coler no cole there are no shut down corners or safety's in the Nfla no there never will be again. The nfl has designed the rule book to be sure of that.

Now is cole a top player, I don't know I don't think he plays enough to know that, but you can find faults in any defenders play on any given week because that's what the nfl wants, they set the rules that way.

I'm blown away when people think that we should have top depth for all positions, no one does and again the nfl makes sure no team does.

Cole is a nice guy, good teammate and willing worker. But he just lacks talent. In todays' Miamai game he came in and on the second play not only allowed a completion, but then failed to tackle to the reciver and 25 yards later the Dolphins had a TD.:(

Cole should be a ST maven and never see the regular playing field, nice guy or not.

Exactly. I can't fathom why anyone assumes the point was that Cole somehow is a top-line player.

On a 53 man roster, let the Dan Snyder's put all their priority on the top 3 guys on the roster. Belichick has built a consistent power over the past 15 years by making sure he has quality depth in #53, #52, #51, #50, #49.....A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

I can't help but chuckle at the kneejerks who are doing somersaults that Cole isn't starter material. He isn't, never has been, never will be. But as a very good, experienced multitasker at the #48 or so spot on the roster.

Personally, I thought Cole and Gregory were both as crap as each other on that play. Both are prone to making the great play and the horrendous play. There's no middle ground with either.

Cole is a nice guy, but on the flip side he might be the worst DB in NFL history. He makes Arrington and our old friend Duane Starks look like Deion Sanders. Once Cole enters the game, it's basically a video game for the opposition.

He sucks, but why was he on Wallace anyway?

Because Arrington went down for awhile.

That response will likely lead you to yet another question, and I bet I can guess what it may be ;)
