Here are some interesting facts about successful veteran receivers who were part of the team before they actually came to NE.

Jabar Gaffney HOU - Benched several times because of inconsistent play. Philadelphia signed him in 2006 but released him before the regular season.
He comes to NE and has over 1,000 yards receiving combined with both 2006 and 2007 seasons and 84 receptions including 8 TDs.

David Patten - Not even 300 yards receiving his first three years with Giants from 1997 to 1999 with only 3 TD. In 2000, with CLE he racked up only 546 yards and 1 TD. He comes to NE and 3 out of 4 years with the teams, he racks up at least 800 yards receiving, 177 receptions and 16 TDs.

Reche Caldwell - With SD, for three years didn't get at least 400 yards receiving, but did get 7 TDs and 66 receptions. He comes to NE and he gets 61 receptions, 4 TDs, and 760 yards in just one season.

Michael Jenkins however has averaged at least 500 yards or more for most of his career, achieving a career high in 2008 of 777 yards which is pretty good considering Roddy White and Michael Turner made up most of the offense that year. He also racked up over a 1,000 yards with both MIN seasons combined, for 78 receptions and 5 TDs in an Adrian Peterson run-first offense with no solid quarterback play to speak of.

Laurent Robinson, pretty average throughout his career, however with Dallas in 2011, he racked up 848 yards, with 54 receptions, and 11 TDs which is the best single season of any veteran receiver to come into NE if we were to sign him, outside of Randy Moss. Interesting stuff. At the end of that 2011 season, he became an unrestricted free agent due to one year contract and signed with JAC, but he did suffer multiple concussions which is why that multimillion dollar 5 year contract didn't last. But that 2011 season was pretty impressive, especially with Witten, Miles Austin and other weapons and this is with Tony Romo throwing him the ball.

So realistically if you look at it, both Michael Jenkins and Laurent Robinson have had more previous success than other veteran wide receivers that have come in NE outside of Randy Moss. Just something to think about..... (busts like Joey Galloway and Chad Johnson just disregard)

Until we see how they perform in our system there's really no way to know how a player will do.

For instance, I think Mike Wallace would struggle in our offense but will do fine elsewhere. Patten is the example I trot out a lot when people post about how we're in deep **** if Jenkins starts a game for us. You just never know when a guy will find an offense that clicks for him.

Those stats right there should pretty much end the GOAT QB debate.

Reche's last drop gave Peyton Manning his only SB win

Your argument is flawed if you just disregard Joey Galloway and Chad Johnson, just as if you disregard following draft picks:

Bethel Johnson
P.K. Sam
Chad Jackson
Brandon Tate
Taylor Price
Jeremy Ebert

You're far and away the most optimistic poster in here, I personally appreciate that. On this though I have to disagree because its not taking consideration any of the veteran WR's that we've signed that haven't contributed. I think you're handicapping the argument that Jenkins and Robinson (who isn't signed) will be productive.

I think his point is average receivers become above average when they play with TB, doesn't mean these two guys will, they could struggle in the system but they could also be pretty reliable receivers this year.

Yeah you still have to look at both sides of the spectrum though. You can't make bias selections to justify an argument.

It doesn't matter anyway it all has to so with circumstance, their age, what's left of their skillet, their level of motivation, it's not as cut and dry as walk into Gillette and you will succeed.

Tell that to Donald Hayes.

How many receptions did wide receiver Greg Salas have last year with the New England Patriots?

What two guys? Laurent Robinson has yet to sign a contract with any NFL team since cut by the Jaguars.

So you are pinning all your hopes on a wide receiver nicknamed "Molasses Mike".

Quite pathetic.

uh, no, just explaining his reasoning, not saying we have anyone that's going to breakout for sure but his point stands, TB has made JAGs better.

Tom Brady experienced the JAG proceedings last off-season:

Ochostinko
Gaffney
Stallworth
Branch
Gonzalez
Ebert
Salas
Scaife
Shiancoe

I don't think that Bo Scaife was here. It's possible that you're thinking of Kellen Winslow.

It appears that Belichick highly undervalues the position of receiver, considering that we've never taken a 1st round draft pick during his tenure and often pack the roster with JAGs and washed up camp bodies.

What that specifically means is the million dollar question, but I'd guess that it's his incredible confidence in Brady and the offensive scheme.

Either way, Molasses Mike Jenkins may be able to take over the role of Molasses Deion Branch as a possession receiver--so we're about equal there. The success of this offense will come down to 3 things in my opinion:

1. The ability and success to run the ball again

2. The potential to continue to run 2 TE sets with Gronk and player to be named

3. The development of the rookie wide receivers

I agree with all these points... I might put "Amedola being able to fill the void Welker left at the slot" as a number 4, but the above three are more important, and if the rookie WRs make a decent impact and the TE's stay healthy, than Amendola might not need to have a +1000 yard season.

As noted last year at this time, JAGs are not the answer.

Scheme without talent equals no Super Bowl.

Deion Branch was a backup last season. No one on the roster has replaced Brandon Lloyd.

Comments:

1. Should be okay.

2. Ballard's and Gronkowski's long term health are questionable at this time.

3. It's going to be a long season for the New England Patriots pass offense.

Well, I guess someone needs to compile all the average veteran receivers that flopped over the last 12-13 years...not me, someone else.

His argument would be flawed if he included them, since he was specifically talking about NFL veterans

I think his point is that Brady has a tendency to make average NFL veterans look a lot better than they are.

Trust me - Brady will complete plenty of passes this year. The difference comes in that "one play" that can make or break a season. In those circumstances you need guys who can stretch the field and won't drop the ball.

Whether we yet have that remains to be seen
