Shane Vereen lined up at WR in Patriots spring practice

Pretty sure Cal used him at WR from time to time (especially when they had Jahvid Best) he has very good hands and has speed to take it to the house on any play.

Didn't the Pats line him up on the edge and ALMOST hit him in the end zone on a deep route last season too?

Pats split him out wide in the playoffs against Houston, and it went for about a 30-yard touchdown. Vereen faked inside and then left the Texans LB in the dust, with the Patriots taking full advantage of the mismatch in coverage.

Does Vereen have enough natural aptitude as a WR that he's meriting legit reps at WR?

Read an article on BR and the report suggested they'd use Vereen with the same philosophy that they used for Hernandez. Line him up all over field and create match up nightmares.

I know BR isn't the best website for respect writers and analysis but I did think that article had some merit. I tried to find the link but I could to share.

That's the one!

For some reason I was thinking it got broken up in the EZ but yeah it was a TD. Next step would be seeing how he goes against CBs then.

Vereen needs to be able to line up as a WR in 4 WR sets (as Faulk did).

He won't be playing WR in the fullest sense...he'll be lining up in the backfield initially (I would presume) and then depending on the defensive personnel on the field, splitting out wide if they don't have a CB or FS to match up with him in coverage.

They could do things like line him up as a receiver to bring down a FS into covering him which takes away someone being bracketed - either Gronk or Amendola for example.

I really put my neck out there believing in this kid when he was drafted, and still believe hes the best RB on the Patriots, and might be the best all around RB in your division. Many abilities make a great RB but none is better than intuative sight . The ability to see every movement on the field in less than a second. All the greats had this.
You can see sanders move and even know what the guys are doing behind him.
Runners are blind because everything happens too fast for normal judgement to be of any use. You think your dead. A runner with sight that runs a 4.6 will always be better than a runner that does not and does 2.1 in the 40. Their are different kinds of runners like Franco Harris, etc , that use brute force and do well, but thats not shane.
But the greats have the sight, and I completely believe this kid has it. You cant teach it, you have to be born with it.
That said this kid can play any attack position on the field because he knows the ball is in the air without looking most of the time. Perfect RB/scat back and will play the position better than reggie bush, I think.

Not saying hes going to be a all time great, I dont believe hes that good, but very talented kid with his head on strait.

Like someone else said, I see him being used the way Kevin Faulk was.

Dont think hes a Faulk type more of a Tiki Barber or tony Dorsett. Faulk was really brilliant, would make defenses even today look stupid.

That was my thought too. If nothing else, 5 wide typically includes an RB as one of the 5.

Exactly, he did this at Cal, caught several 40+ yard passes for TDs. He has great hands and route running abilities and is deadly against LBs.

I'd like the Patriots to use Vereen in the same manner the Vikings began using Harvin (all over the field and from multiple formations).

I've been a believer in Vereen from Day 1. Now is the time for Vereen to become the weapon some of us hope he can be.

I see him having an impact as a receiver more so than a runner, so I'm happy they are trying this. A Percy Harvin type receiver would be very nice.

Yes, we officially have a Percy Harvin type player to line up all over the field. He is a great route runner with fantastic hands and can exploit many like he did against the Texans. That gives us more flexibility.
