Kyle Love released

And I pray that this never happens because Love seems like a great guy ...but if something happens to him in the Jaguars training camp or in the season because of too much activity so soon, then maybe ignorant people like Florio would realize NE did what was best for a player that I believe they really cared for off and on the field and wanted him back after asking him to take some time off to change his life and eating style.

He'll just find a way to blame NE for it*

*I hope we never have to find that out

The Patriots ABSOLUTELY did the right thing with Love. I also have type 2 Diabetes and while the disease is controllable and I lead a normal life. The NFL is FAR from a "normal life". Its really is going to several months for him to be able to develop a regimen that will allow him to keep his 300+lb weight and control his diabetes. And that's taking a leap of faith that he even can accomplish that.

The team who is taking a real legal risk is not the Pats but the Jags. I bet his new contract is littered with waivers protecting the team if he should suddenly have an issue. I actually fear for this kid's health. Clearly he is not getting good medical advice. Everything he is doing contradicts what a diabetic needs to do when he first discovers he has the disease.

As for Florio, he's nothing more than a bitter Steeler fan from nearby Morgantown WV, who STILL hasn't come to grips with those 2 AFCCG loses back in 2001 and 2003. And you should all know that there are over 100 replies to his post talking about the "ultimatum" the Pats gave Love. What's interesting is that over 85% defend the Pat's handling of this situation and expose the ludicrous attempt by Florio to call for a law suit against the Pats.

Clearly its a very good thing that Florio got this gig with NBC, because if this is an example of his legal skills, he must have really sucked as an attorney. He was exposed over and over again by layman football fans. Image what a merely competent real lawyer would do to him.

Since he was claimed rather than signed, don't the Jaguars just assume what remained of Love's Patriots contract, therefore making this impossible?

I think you are right, Sciz, which makes their decision even more curious. What Love in doing is clearly not in his own best interests. When I was first diagnosed I did very little to do what was necessary to get my disease under control, and the result is a permanent neuropathy to my feet. I have it under control now, but I have to take a shot of insulin every day. The neuropathy isn't debilitating, just irritating. It takes forever for even small scratches and bruises to heal. The point is that it was all unnecessary. It wouldn't have happened if I had taken the diagnosis seriously.

So I understand Love's reaction to the Pats' move. He's in his 20's and "invincible" in his own eyes. He thinks he can control this and still weigh 300+. He very well might, but the odds are against it. Even if he had a year, the odds would be against it. The path he taking now just isn't a prudent one. I know from my own example.

Meanwhile the Jags shouldn't encouraging this bad decision. BTW- to those wondering "what is Vince going to think". Vince is going to think that the Pats did EXACTLY the right thing. They didn't need to offer the year on retirement to see if he can keep his diabetes under control and STILL keep his weight over 300lbs. So don't worry about Vince.

I love Love's fire, but really question his decision to keep playing at this time

June 1st cuts are a thing of the past. You can cut guys before that date and designate them as post-June 1st cuts nowadays. Most cuts will come in camp. I think Pouha is the guy to look at - surprised he hasn't been signed yet. Maybe his back is just too screwed up.

Actually, There were June 1st cuts last year. Teams can only cut two players prior to June 1st to be designated as a June 1st cut. Some of those have taken place. Others haven't.

Hang in there, Ken. There is work being done now using stem cells to regenerate nerve and muscle tissues that may eventually lead to a therapy for this. Not soon, but not forever, either.

BTW, as a side note. Love's agent is fooling himself if he believes that Love will be able to get to a stable weight, incorporate a new diet and new exercise regimen in about 6 weeks. It takes months to do that. Why? Because everyone is different. You can't just start eating a new diet and think things will be fine.

Not everyone has the same triggers for spikes in their blood sugar. For instance, I have a friend who can't eat baked potatoes (even just a half with no butter or other toppings) where as I can eat half a baked potato with one dollop of sour cream and some bacon bits and my blood sugar doesn't waiver. I have a friend who can't eat fruits because they spike his blood sugar. Yet, I can.

Now, add in the fact that these guys are eating 4000-5000 calories a day to keep up their weight and abilities, and you have a very fine balancing act you have to manage..

Re: Kyle Love to be released

I dont know much about the medical condition but how about not having blatantly biased opinion in his article because the team has responsed yet. "Human rights" violation ?? He doesnt seem to wonder why they offered him to retire for 1 yr instead of outright cut him in the first place..

I'm not even sure the premise of the article is factually accurate. "Football and type 2 diabetes can coexist"?? Has anyone diagnosed with type 2 diabetes ever played in the NFL? Cutler has type 1. I think Kendall Simmons (a comparable player to Love) also had type 1.

But this is entirely different from having type 2 diabetes. Type 1 can be managed with careful blood monitoring and insulin injections. I would agree that could be managed in an NFL situation...and Simmons had a solid career.

Type 2 diabetes has to do with the insulin in the body not processing sugar correctly. It is a dicey situation in that medication needs to be adjusted frequently to ensure that it is working as needed. Miss the mark on the dosage and bad things can happen quickly. Also, type 2 diabetes can be devastating to certain parts of the body...namely the heart and nerves in the extremities (requiring amputation in extreme cases).

I am confident there is not a doctor on the planet that would allow their patient with type 2 diabetes to stay at 300+ lbs. It becomes even more questionable when you allow the person to train outside during the summer while you are fine-tuning their medication. I really hope Love can find a way to get and stay healthy. I'm pretty sure that playing in the NFL (particularly this year) is not that way.

There is a surgery that they have been performing down in Brazil and in India that seems to be successful. Basically, they disconnect your intestines and flip the ends, putting the Ileum near the stomach.

I was able to find an article from 2010 that mentions it and they had remission rate of 95% in 700 subjects.

Love was not much but man did the Pats miss him in the AFC Championship, once he went down Vince was on the field a lot and there was no depth at DT.

Maybe Duron Harmon can play DT, Harmon instead of Jesse Williams... I will never understand that one.

Not that I'm doubting the science of this, but can you imagine the first person to suggest this as an option? Sounds like a mechanic that has run out of ideas to get your car to pass inspection. "How about we put the muffler at the front?"

Well, they put the muffler in the back on most cars because it would, otherwise, interfere with the passenger compartment.. :p

Doing some more looking, it turns out that the procedure was developed back in 2003 by the Brazilian doctor.

Also, I posted the other link to the fact that the University of Texas was doing a study on this procedure, so it may not be that far off.

Didn't it turn out that Jesse Williams fell because of medical issues??? Questions about his left knee and then the concussion he'd suffered?

I have a real treat for you guys. Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Mike Florio (via email):

From me:

I knew that was coming.

Stop making excuses and read the EEOC provisions for covered persons when it comes to medical diagnosis relating to diabetes.

Mike Florio:

i practiced law for 18 years, employment law for 15. i know a thing or two about the ADA.

No offense Mike -

If you have been receiving threats of bodily harm don't interpret it as it coming from me and if you have been receiving threats of bodily harm then I feel sorry for you.

But, know this. You will lose readers because you clearly didn't do your research. If you knew anything about the EEOC and how individuals are covered and not covered if they have diabetes then your stories would have reflected that and then maybe there would have been a more clear discourse regarding your column.

In the end, you decided to use one source for your story which by the way was his agent which is hardly an impartial opinion and frankly, I would have given you a lot more credit in interviewing an impartial medical doctor who would have discussed the inherent risks of someone with TII Diabetes with the kind of bodytype that Kyle Love has.

It is too bad that you used that sole source of information because the moment that you decided to use Love's agent for this story, I am willing to bet that Kyle Love's agent didn't get permission from his client to release or discuss medical information relating to his diabetes condition because had the Patriots released that medical information then it could have been perceived as a violation of HIPAA.

You should admit it when you are wrong. This is clearly a case of that and it is not our fault that you don't have a supervisor who understands your lack of understanding regarding the EEOC provisions within the ADA laws of this country and how Love and the Patriots were to follow its rules based on covered employees and the undue burden that was presented in this case.

That is good Mike because I can tell you right now that if you think Belichick made this decision lightly regarding Kyle Love without getting an informed opinion from the team doctor or their attorney regarding the risks associated with Type II Diabetes then you are wrong.

Until you do a mea culpa, then the boys at patsfan.com and I are done with you. I have stopped following PFT because of your crap today and it is safe to say that no one expects an apology from you because you think that you are never wrong which by the way is a bad attribute for a sports journalist. Don't be surprised that you hear from Rodney Harrison as well regarding your columns.

BTW - it makes me wonder why you and MJD wanted to eliminate the comments section.

Good bye Mike and good luck with your future endeavors. I am sure that you will hear it from people that have worked with the Patriots.

Well guess what Mike -

Glad that you care how I spelled drivel. I hope that Stacy James and the folks at Patriot Place send a strongly worded letter to NBC regarding your so-called columns today.

You have earned it. Next time, you want to comment, do it with a little bit of accuracy. BTW - I am a Dan Patrick and NBC fan and I will be sure that this doesn't end with your so-called columns as well.

SIncerely,

A Liberal from Boston

Your so-called journalism regarding the Kyle Love story and then with the
Kraft's secondary investment into the Revolution is enough for me and just about anyone in New England to tell you that you should go **** yourself and never read another story of yours again.

I know for one that I am done reading your dribble and I can say that as someone who professionally left the field of sports journalism after working in Boston and Chicago because of xxxxxxxxxxxx like yours today.

Congrats. You just joined the ranks of Michael Felger and Tony Mazz.

If you don't do a mea culpa tomorrow in a column then we will all know where you stand.

:rocker:

Williams has warts, plenty of them. But it wasn't like Harmon is a sure fire hall of fame lock. My money is on Williams playing some NFL snaps and Harmon being a sad footnote.

Oh yeah, and let’s act like the Patriots didn’t draft Marcus Cannon after his cancer, sign Armond Armstead after his heart attack, help Tedy Bruschi return to the field after a stroke, or work with Matt Light through his decade as a starting left tackle with Crohn’s.

They clearly think this situation is a lot worse than any of those.

Quoted for truth. Best rebuttal to this topic I've read.

He might as well have called Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft immoral in his three columns today. If there is one thing that I cannot stand it is a reporter who thinks that he is the story and can classify an entire group (namely Belichick and the Kraft family) with impunity the way that Mike Florio did today.

I hope that the Patriots did take notice today and Florio is held to the standard that he failed to uphold in his columns.

And to add to that: they made a similar offer after Bruschi's stroke. If he wanted to retire from the field, but stay with the organization, they'd rip up his contract and give him a job in the front office.

Having diabetes and a scientific background, I researched this quite a bit. The R&D work with stem cells is primarily addresed to create more pancreatic cells of the type to make insulin, hoping to eventually implant them in patients. But that sucess is with the patients own cells that are made into stem cells.

For a while the politically correct left wanted to use embryo cells to make into stem cells. But if you succeeded, and they haven't, the body's own system would fight and kill the implants as invaders, as if they were an infection.

The body won't attack its own Self Stem cells, however. So its results would be much better.

I really think the whole embryonic stem cell nonsense was fundamentally a propaganda campaign by the Planned Parenthood baby destroyers, to find a sort of justification for their grisly but legal activities. As time has gone on, the embryonic stem cells research was proven to be a dead end with no success; and furthermore it was found that it was based on a set of phony scientific papers published by a Korean malefactor.

Normal philantropies won't waste their monies subsidizing this dead end, phony, research any longer. So the politicians were petitioned to have the government fund this unsuccessful approach. Lefties never met a spending project that theywouldn't support. But even that is drying up, while Self stem generation makes genuine progress.
