1. The Pats assigned a number on Sanders they thought would get the job done, while still maintaining the reality that they were taking a risk on a player that hadn't proven he was worth the $5MM/yr number that's been thrown around here. Clearly the number was high enough to get the kid to sign, and more than what the Steeler where initially willing to pay.

2. I understand that the "OMG our WR's are the worst in the league, and our season is DOOMED" crowd is a distinct minority, but they are a very loud and vocal minority. They should know their rant is getting tiresome, mostly because they fail to even acknowledge any opposing views. Its as if they think if they say the same thing over and over again, it will make it true.

As of this moment Gronk Hernandez, Amendola, and Edelman are our 4 top receivers. No one here can doubt their skills as receivers. They all have proven that they can get open, catch the ball, and get yards after the catch. The ONLY issue with these 4 players is, can they stay on the field. J

ones has shown flashes, especially against the Pats, so who knows what he can be in a dynamic offense with a HOF QB. Jenkins is what he is. No illusions here. If he makes the team he can be that physical WR who is an additional red zone threat. A guy you can count on for 40 catches and 500 yds coming off the bench.

3. Whether its LLoyd coming back, some other FA or some draft pick, this RECEIVING corp as a will be just fine. It is ludicrous to compare it to the 2006 situation. The situations couldn't be more different.

BTW - it should be noted that despite all the flaws of that 2006 group, it was the 11th best passing attack in the league, the 7th best scoring offense, and a DEFENSIVE collapse from getting to the superbowl.

The tinfoil hat brigade should take a deep breath. Sanders isn't coming and that's a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint. The offense is going to be just fine. The defense is going to be significantly better, and the team is going to be in the mix come playoff time. Issues remain, but compared to the rest of league, they remain small.

Some great points as usual Ken. I was not a fan of the Sanders move from the getgo, so I'm actually happy Pitt matched. Despite all the terrible drafting of WR's in the past, it's time BB and his scouting crew finally hit some homeruns. Allen or Hunter (my preference) in the first, then Rogers or Dobson in the 3rd, and then we've added some great potential to an already amazing offense.

I may be in the minority, but I'm psyched to see what guys like Ebert, Aiken & Holmes can do in training camp, after a full year of learning the playbook. I'm really intrigued by Aiken's size and explosiveness (at least in college) and Ebert's speed.

You must have your tinfoil hat on the locked and loaded position buddy, if you think the Pats are going to use 2 of their 5 draft picks on WR's

I don't find that particularly outlandish at all. They currently have one quality receiver on the roster. Where are the other ones coming from, pray tell, if not the draft?

Why do you hate Tom Brady?

The defense is going to be significantly better? Based on what?
Tommy Kelly and Adrian Wilson are (aging) veteran role players; they will not make a poor defensive team not poor. Now, there's something to be said for continuity on the back end, as some of our problems can be attributed to the constant moving parts and lack of communication. Is that enough to make the defense significantly better? Maybe last year’s rookies develop further. Maybe Talib stays healthy and plays well. Hell, maybe Dowling stays healthy and proves he can actually play (neither of which he has done to date.) There's more questions than definitive evidence the defense will be significantly better. They can be better, but it's also possible they remain bad.

On offense, the only issue isn't that our receivers stay healthy. Until we have a receiver that can beat press coverage and/or threaten on the outside, the issues our offense has had in the playoffs will remain issues. Playoff caliber defenses can take away the seams when they don’t need to defend the outside. Yet again, Brady will have to play perfectly. We don't need Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson, but we sure as hell need someone to compete with Donald Jones for the outside receiver. Given the struggles this team has had in finding and developing receivers, taking two in this year's draft is not in any universe 'crazy.' Not drafting a WR? Yeah, now that's crazy.

Whoever the number 1 receiver is, brady has to learn to thrown a better deep ball.

I don't know whats more amusing. That you think Brady doesn't have a good deep ball or the that you think a QB who's been in the league for over a decade will just "learn" to throw a better deep ball as if its something he's purposefully neglected over his career.

Sanders over 3rd-pick, most definitely. Past 2nd & 3rd pick WRs were pretty bad...

I fear Patriots may re-sign Lloyd...

Sanders isn't that good. McD can draft good wr's, so, let him do that. Lloyd isn't that bad.

Last year BB drafted 2 pass rushers early. I can see BB drafting 2 wr's early this year.

Thank you patfanken - Lets' hope that the tinfoil brigade decides to dial it down a notch. Every offseason, I hear the same ____________. Our wide receiving corps sucks. We need a better defensive line. Our defensive secondary is atrocious.

If the tinfoil brigade could just learn how to read then hopefully an intellectual dialogue can be begin without the naysayers budding in and whining. We all know who that would be as a part of the brigade.

I cannot believe that the fans of Patriot Nation could whine as much as I have witnessed on this board over the last week. No wonder why there is no crowd noise. Because they are wasting it on Internet Message Boards.

I agree with all that except the first sentence. You say that your interactions with him "confirm" he is a cancer in the locker room.

Is that how you were confirming it? Or do you have actual "conformation" that he was a cancer in the actual locker room...I mean more than what some articles said about him being a strange dude etc...

I dont equate being a wierdo and strange guy and not social/friendly to cancer? I dont recall any article saying such unless I missed it. I dont think BL ever reached "cancer" level.

I also dont think getting him back even cheaper is going to do much to help is attitude, but seeing that no other team has gone after him might make him realize this is as good as it is going to get.

Odds are...that if no other team has gone after him, there must be a reason. As mentioned, The Patriots way doesn't allow players to comment on that. However....... (I like doin' the ........thing) However...... He did fall out of favor towards the end of the season not being targeted as much as earlier in the season. I believe overall he only caught 56% of the balls targeted towards him. Granted.....75 catches are good....however he did drop more than a few thrown to him, made the catch and floundered.....and couldn't catch up to passes over his head for one reason or another!!

If you don't think there is serious deficiency at WR the I seriously question your ability to evaluate the Patriots on any level. Getting Sanders would have been only a piece towards getting the unit up to speed and they would have had to hit on at least another vet FA or a draft pick. At this Point they have one starting quality receiver with serious questions about durability and a bunch of jags and that is not acceptable for a team looking to win a championship. Belichick needs to make multiPle moves to make the unit above average at a minimum and if that means multiple picks in this draft or a combination of picks and trade the. Do it, the current state of the unit is mediocre at best and that sucks.

We now have healthy and physical receivers! Yay!

Hernandez
Edelman
Amendola
Gronk

Hurt hurt hurt hurt

Say what you want about Lloyd.. At least he was on the field every game
Ya he was on the field because he was too big of a wuss to take a hit. His nickname should be "Flounder"

For one, I don't claim to know what the Pats are going to do in the draft. For another, you must be totally blind and/or incompetent right now because I clearly stated that I didn't think the Pats would shell out the coin and pick for Cruz.

Yes, but that's not because that position is all that matters. The team needs an upgrade for Branch, a split end, and a flanker. Lloyd, at the very least could provide an upgrade to what Branch did/didn't give us. Either he or the rookie could man the flanker position, and we need another split end. So, if you're keeping track at home, that's three. Jenkins should not be counted on and Jones has done nothing to make anybody feel warm and fuzzy about his ability to come in and make an impact outside the hashes, unless you're one of those people that just really wants to feel that everything is okay at all times because, well, IBBWT.

Actually, I've made it clear that DE is a top need as well as CB. But hey, it's not like Belichick can draft down/trade Mallett/trade Demps and acquire more picks, right? Drink some cranberry juice, Ken. It's a natural diuretic and it sounds like you need to be cleansed.

No offense - KonTradiction, but you are one of them. You have no clue regarding the talent on this team and in its depth chart. I thank God that people like you are not running the New England Patriots.

Ivan - Do you have a solution that can be discussed outside of wasting two high round picks on wide receivers so that Tom Brady has additional passing options with the exception of Gronk, Hernandez, Ballard, Amendola, Edelman and Vereen?

Lloyd is a tosser as a person but could do a job if we need him for the season while a rookie gets up to speed with the system.

Why do I say this about him? When I was over there we managed to bump into him the next day while we wandered around Gillette and I asked if he would have a photo taken with my 8 year old (seeing as we had come all the way from Australia to the game). He refused and was just not nice about it. Sure his prerogative I guess but you could be nice to a kid. Its not hard.

On the field if he does the job for the Pats next year as a stop gap then great.
Tah dah...as I mentioned a few pages back...he was my neighbor and a ****!!!...

Have you ever stopped to think that you keep hearing those same things every offseason because the Pats have not fixed those issues? It looks as if the team has figured out that they need better talent at DE and CB, now I expect them to fix WR.

Totally uncalled for. If you want to cast aspersions, the least you could do is highlight specific areas of disagreement and articulate your own case.
