The 2013 Prospect Thread

if catapano lasts until the 7th we should jump on him i dont mind if he doesnt offer much more than bequette did last year since he would be a late round guy

What are the thoughts on Eric Reid around here? Would you take him as a Early 2nd rounder? How about a mid 2nd rounder?

Don't want to damn by faint praise but in my eyes, Eric Reid is just OK. There's little about him that make him a 'bang the table' guy. I also think we've got much greater needs for us to be taking a safety that high.

thank you for that wonderful link

I think he's a bit overrated, having declined this season with some of LSU's star d-backs gone. Goes for the big hit more often than he should.

I would not take him in the 2nd round. And while I haven't seen them play nearly as much as I saw Reid, I'd prefer several other safeties to him (Elam and Vaccaro, Jefferson, probably Rambo and Swearinger, maybe Lester and even evans, too)

I hope Bill stays far, far away from Elam.

As for Reid, I would love to have him here, but unless he's still available at 59, it ain't happening.
Seeing that Bill has merely settled for the status quo at CB instead of actually improving the position,
I am resigned to the fact that Bill is extremely more likely to select a CB with his first pick.

Hey guys - longtime ESPN community member who has finally decided to migrate over here. I was wondering if you guys have discussed the need of an outside linebacker that would allow Hightower or Mayo to rotate back inside in 4-3 passing defense sub-packages. If there is one thing that we should have learned from the Ravens title game it is that we can never allow Spikes or Hightower cover Ray Rice and Dennis Pitta again.

I really like Arthur Brown, OLB, Kansas State at pick 29 if he is there and if not then Alec Ogletree, OLB, Georgia if they keep their 1st round pick.

What do you guys think?

The problem that screams at me right away is his weight. At 228, he's not a MLB or ILB in the Pats defense. The Pats won't even look at him because of that. I don't think they've ever willingly started the year with a ILB/MLB under 240 lbs during the BB era.

If he can get to 245 and not lose anything, then I'm all for it. It would make him similar to Tedy. And yes, that would help them cover TE's, though at 6'0, the 6'4-6'6 TEs still have a huge advantage over him.

DaBruinz - What is up? MultiLingo is here and here for good.....I did a search on Arthur Brown and I found your opinion on him. I like Brown as a 4-3 OLB and particularly for pass defense sub-packages.

Fairly good Arthur Brown and Alec Ogletree comparison.

That sounds about right. Thank you for putting this up for us to read. I really like Arthur Brown to play WLB for the Pats if he is there at pick 29 and if the Pats don't trade down....

I feel like a rookie in here after being a part of the Patriots forum at ESPN for 15 years....

Welcome.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Alec Ogletree - I just feel he has a greater chance of being special than Brown. I like Brown but he never really stands out to me whereas Ogletree stands out almost every time I watch him. Having said that, I do worry a little that Ogletree might like the intelligence/discipline to play in a very controlled system like ours. Georgia seem to let their defenders freelance a little which likely won't go over to well with BB.

Thanks for the welcome....Yea, I like Ogletree quite a bit as well. For me Arthur Brown looks the part as a Patriot both as a football player and as a leader. He has a strong base (he has bulked up to 241) and plays with a strong point of attack. He was a team captain, and has a strong pedigree (former Hurricane recruit and his brother is Bryce Brown). Good kid and just looking at him, you can tell that he will never be a disruption in the lockerroom. Finally, he is the kind of guy that we can rely on in the 4-3 passing defense sub-packages particularly against Ray Rice and Dennis Pitta.

He would be a solid add for the Patriots.

There's a lot to like for sure but I just feel that because we are well set at LB, it would take someone special for us to draft someone there and Ogletree has that something special whilst I don't think Brown has. I'd take Brown with our second rounder no questions asked, just not convinced with our first.

I wish we were all set at linebacker but unfortunately we are not. Hightower and Spikes lack the capacity to play pass defense against good running back and tight end combinations like Ray Rice and Dennis Pitta.

There is a reason why teams are getting weakside linebackers like Akeem Ayers or rangy middle linebackers like Bobby Wagner because they are better equipped to man good pass catching running backs and tight ends. While Mayo is decent, there is a true need for a rangy weakside linebacker especially after what Pitta and Rice did in the AFC Title Game.

Also, considering pick 29 is where the Pats currently reside, this is going to be the best fit that the Pats can find even with the questionable depth that they have at wideout and cornerback.

A guy like Brown or Ogletree fit a need with very good talent at pick 29.

I would be absolutely furious if the Patriots drafted a LB at 29.

Why would anyone be furious about drafting a good weakside linebacker at pick 29?

Because we have glaring holes elsewhere that need to be addressed and we don't have enough picks to afford luxury selections.
