Interesting stuff..... check it out http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/news/story?id=2757050

To some up the whispers
1. Supposedly the pats have issues with #54's decline in pass coverage skills this year and they plan on using him in a limited role in 2007. they also say Teddy will play another season.

2. Tully Banta-cain. Rumor has it that the Jets want him and the Pats have no desire to resign him.

3. Many insiders think the Pats are going to make a hard push for Ravens Free Agent linbacker Adalius Thomas. This would make sense if the Bruschi rumors are true.

Intersting stuff. I would love to see us make a run at Thomas. I also could care less if Tully goes to the Patriots minor league team in New Jersey.

Any thoughts??

Thanks for posting.

I don't think our pursuit of Adalius Thomas has anything to do with Bruschi's situation however. Thomas's preferred position is OLB. Pat Kirwan compared him to McGinest. Kirwan also said on Sirius NFL Radio that he thought the Bengals would go after Thomas, FWIW.

I want to keep TBC as a situational pass rusher.

I doubt we get Thomas because either the Ravens will sign him, or franchise and trade him. But that would be a GREAT pickup and make our defense just plain fierce.

If we pay Thomas, does that mean we DON'T pay Samuel?

hmmm having to pick from the two I'd have to go with Samuel, he's younger, and plays an extremely hard position

One more question, Thomas undoubtfully wants a 5 or 6 year deal...he's already 29...sure he'll be great now, but what about when he's 34. I suppose we could just have fake years at the end of the contract a la Willie M., but would he really accept that?

So if this rumor is true, how does everyone feel about the draft? Do we go WR then Cb/S (or vice versa)? or do we draft an OLB as well? I like the idea of drafting a Safety and then possibly an ILB, but i like Harris in the 2nd round, so i wouldnt mind this:

(insert your preferences as neccesary, but these are the guys I like)
1a. Ross, CB, Texas
1b. Griffin, S, Texas (or Meriweather, depending on if BB thinks he is clear of character issues [see thread in Draft Forum])
2. Harris, ILB, Michigan

So we would have, on D (Assuming Asante and TBC leave):
Wilfork, Warren, Seymour, Green, Wright
OLB: Vrabel, A. Thomas, Colvin, Woods
ILB: Bruschi, Seau, Alexander, Izzo, Harris, Mays (OLB or ILB?)
CB: Gay, Hobbs, Ross, Mickens, (i know im forgetting someone here)
S: Wilson, Harrison, Hawkins, Griffin (missing here too??)

I think that is solid for ability, and the depth is decent too.

i imagine it all depends on how much $$$ we offer in year #1 of the contract. Good point about Samual. I would be very suprised if his camp and the Pats find common ground.

PFW Whispers also says that Kevin Curtis is likely to reach free agency. I think if we get Thomas and Curtis in free agency, it will be a very productive offseason. I think both those guys are the epidtomy of Patriots players.

The thing is that the Ravens are only currently $5.7 million under the cap and word is that they are leaning towards letting Thomas go because of the financial ramifications of trying to keep him. Things could change, but sometimes teams have to let players like Thomas go because they don't have the flexibility.

Thomas will be 30 by the time the season starts. However, I can see him only wanting a 4 year deal so he can retire at the end of it.

I do see the Pats going after Thomas because of Bruschi's failing skills. Why? Because of Thomas' versatility and ability to play inside as well as outside.

Also, with $24 million in cap space, the Pats can easily afford to pay Samuel and Thomas and still have 10-12 million for other players and their draft picks.

I stopped reading that PFW a few years ago because they seem to be about the farthest out of the loop of all the football outlets particularly where this team is concerned.

No thanks. I'd rather sign someone and draft a rookie to develop.

The Ravens have said they aren't going to franchise him.

I believe the two are mutually exclusive because of the amount of free cap space the Pats have.

Thomas will be 30 by the time the season starts. I'd be very surprised if anyone offered him more than a 4 year deal.

Are you the one who keeps bringing up Jarrett Johnson? The more I research the guy the more I see a young Vrabel. He would be an awesome pickup.

I can see the Jets signing TBC to more $$$$$$ than he is worth. Interesting rumors.

Looking at the Ravens free agent list, it looks like a given that they will tag him. He's the only quality UFA they have.

There is good news for the Pats. This draft is very, very deep on hybrid DEs:

Gaines Adams
Jamaal Anderson
Quintin Moses
Jarvis Moss
Victor Abiamiri
LaMarr Woodley
Anthony Spencer
Jay Moore

Actually, Jarrett Johnson is a versatile, smart, hard-nosed football player. He can play ILB/OLB/DE. Some people have said he'd be this year's Mike Vrabel. I think he'd be a great pick-up.

Of the draft picks you've mentioned, I believe only Adams has actually played LB in college. Clemson used him very similar to how the Pats used McGinest.

I am one of several people who have mentioned Jarrett Johnson.

we dont really need PFW to tell all this...most of these are obvious..
jets will go after samuel also if we let him go. dillon's cap is high so it obvious there will be some kinda restructring...

this is too simple ..all of us fans know it i think...no need for PFW to listen to 'whispers'

I don't so much of a given. They don't have a lot of cap space to franchise anyone. They are going to lose a couple of starters and Jonathan Ogden is talking about retiring, Derrick Mason is upset with his role and looking to get out, and they still need to upgrade their offense before this.

I think the Ravens want to keep Thomas and are willing to pay him if they can find room. Otherwise, they will probably be forced to let him test the open market.

1) There will be no restructuring of Dillon's contract.

2) Why does anyone think that we can replace him for $2.5M per year?

I think A Thomas will sign with the 49ers. Mike Nolan have a lot of cap room and Thomas at LOLB next to Manny Lawson at ROLB could be one of the best 3-4 backer tandems in the NFL.
