How much longer will Patrick Chung last?

Is't Wilson more of a cover safety? If that is the case, we have booth Gregory and Wilson back there, booth out of the box cover safeties.

With the way Spikes played, Running Backs might ask not to run the ball, so coverage safeties are better :D

Patrick Chung the new target, as the safeties come under attack by the instant experts who need to be constantly on the attack.

Why is it that when the Pats complete a pass its because we have a great QB, elite receivers and exceptional schemes, yet when any team completes a pass against us, its because our secondary sucks and our guys should be replaced.

We aren't facing the Patriots' offense every week. There are, at the very most, 3 other teams with our offensive firepower: the Packers, the Saints and the Texans. If we are getting burnt by those guys, okay, there's nothing to be ashamed of. That's not exactly the case though.

For certain angry sad, and spoiled Pats fans. In an age where 300 yd games are common, 60% completion rates are minimum requirements (except if you are Mark Sanchez ;) ) and the rules are stacked against defenders: it has become clear that ANY completion made by an opponent HAS to be the result of gross malfeasance some Patriot defensive back. Can't be any other reason.....and "off with their heads"

What's not to understand?

Look at the posters.......

You stumbled into a debate between the villlage idiots.

Chung is below average, but scary thing is,he is the best the team has.

I would have signed Landry despite the injury issues and the attitude

It's 'idiotic' to think safety play has been subpar this season? Really? Our defense came up with 6 turnovers and still gave up 28 points to a middling Bills offense, and many big plays were made in the middle of the field. That absolutely is concerning. Should we be picketing for Chung and Gregory to be cut? Obviously not. But watching the games I can see a noticeable improvement on the play of our front seven; the secondary, on the other hand, seems to be in 2011 form still. That doesn't mean they won't improve, just that it isn't idiotic to be apprehensive over the way they've performed so far.

This upcoming draft is supposed to be an excellent one for safeties, and I see the following positions as the top priorities (no specific order) moving forward, unless we see some major change in play level:

S
CB
DT
DE/OLB
OG
C

Of course, this assumes Welker's return...

Neither currently starting safety is good enough to be a building block.

talk to me .. what does he do well? what does he bring to the table? I'm being serious btw .. not a contrarian ..

To answer your question he is very good in run support and he hits pretty hard. He is not the best coverage safety. But what he really brings to this team right now is his knowledge of our defense and coverage schemes. Giving the mess and lack of contnuity we had in the secondary last year I think this is an important thing.

I have been a pretty big fan of Chung all along and I will be the first one to admit that he has not grown into the player that I hoped but I also dont think his game is bad enough to be the whipping boy for all that ails our secondary. I still think he is better than Gregory and while Tavon looks awesome he likely isnt ready to take on a full load yet so what other choice do you have.

Daimion Stafford, S, Nebraska is someone I think would fit the Pats well. I also wouldn't be opposed to a one year stop gap FA or even Chung given a one year deal to give Ebner more time to develop before becoming a starter.

Liability in coverage and a more in the box safety. Unless he takes a nice paycut, he's gone after this season. I, for one, wouldn't have a problem with it.

Does taking a paycut make him any better?

To be fair only 2 of the 4 games thus far have resembled the '11 secondary and it is certainly worth noting that the secondary has caused more then its share of turnovers and without looking it up seem like they will be far and above '11 in this category.

Huh?

So what?

It's beyond amazing how clueless some of you are on how to evaluate things.

The Bills had the ball 15 times!!!

Standard game drives is 7-9.

In the space of the 15 drives they managed two meaningful drives and turned the ball over six times.

They also scored on a few short turnover drive and a meaningless garbage TD.

If the Bills had the ball 15 times, that means the Patriots will have it 14, 15, or 16.

How many points do you expect this offense to put up with that many drives?

Ahhhh like how about 52?

Ken this is a great outlook, but does'nt change the fact that our safety play is horrible. The only possible exception to that has been the suprisingly decent play of Wilson.

That's how I see it, too. Wilson seems to be coming into his own, and in today's NFL I'm not a big fan of safeties who can't cover. Pats would still go into the offseason needing another safety, but that bridge can be crossed when we come to it.

If Chung had played 20 years ago, he would have been a lot more valuable than he is today.

Are you also assuming that Vollmer returns? If not, OT might warrant a place on that list, although if the Pats are totally sold on Cannon as RT then who knows.

You forgot the Falcons.

Yes, I am. I don't see him breaking the bank at this point, although things can change moving forward.

The fact that Chung is in a contract season and the Pats have made no gesture to sign Chung to a 2nd contract speaks volumes.

I suppose Chung could recite your litany of excuses to BB and company if they ever sit down and talk contract.

I've never been high on Chung because he'a always a step late and continues to make the same mistakes week in week out. Wilson look good where Chung and Gregory do not. As Deus points out, Safety is a massive need either in Free Agency or through the draft.
