I am not here to bash Welker or speculate on his ability or whether or not his playing time was purposefully decreased for any reason other than the game plan at hand.

I think Wes is easily one of the best slot receivers in the league and would be a huge asset to any team, particularly one with a young QB looking for a reliable safe target.

The Patriots have what is easy to see is a very explosive offense and a seemingly improved defense that IMO is one or two upgrades in the secondary away from being as close to a complete team since 2003.

The offense has evolved to where I don't think TB needs to rely so heavily on Wes anymore. We have more true receiving threats - especially inside with the TE's and seemingly an improved running game.

I think his value to the Pats is significantly lower than it was a year ago, but his trade value may have actually increased with so many rookie or 2nd year QB's starting. Given all the weapons an opponent has to game plan for when playing NE, I think Edleman would be an adequate replacement.

Trading Welker for an upgrade over any one of these 4 players: Chung, Gregory, McCourty, Arrington - would be worth it. Interested to hear what the rest of you think.

I would also assume that if Wes were traded he would be free to negotiate a new long term contract with his new team. is this right?

I think you're underestimating how important Welker is to the offense. Imagine if one of Hernadez/Gronk/Lloyd went down and we traded away Welker? Depth is so important, and people need to start realizing this.

Someone needs a reality check. Welker makes Gronk and Hernandez even more effective.

I love this board. When a player doesn't have a statistically high game, he has no value to the team and should be traded. I can only imagine what will happen on here if Ridley doesn't get 100+ yards on sunday.

In before epic Ivan meltdown.. you're an idiot!!

And for once I agree with him.

...unless his trade is integral to us getting a young, shut-down corner.. ;)

He's a huge part of this offense this year. Cut the crap.

You do realize Welker is owed almost $10M this year, and teams have already set their rosters, right?

If we're going to go wild with overreaction, we might as well go really wild with overreaction....

I am not here to bash Brady or speculate on his ability or whether or not his playing time was purposefully decreased for any reason other than the game plan at hand.

I think Tom is easily one of the best quarterbacks in the league and would be a huge asset to any team, particularly one with a young HC looking for a reliable safe triggerman.

The offense has evolved to where I don't think BB needs to rely so heavily on Tom anymore. We have more true receiving threats - especially inside with the TE's and seemingly an improved running game.

I think his value to the Pats is significantly lower than it was a year ago, but his trade value may have actually increased with so many rookie or 2nd year HC's coaching. Given all the weapons an opponent has to game plan for when playing NE, I think Mallet would be an adequate replacement.

After all, Tom only threw for under 236 three times last year.

My buddy has been saying since last year we don't need welker..he is still VERY important to this team..

I think he has a ton of value to the team. And I said at the beginning of the post that this had nothing to do with the Titans game specifically. But i think where this team is weakest is in the secondary. So if we could trade one facet of what is certain to be one of the best offenses in the league for a player that would upgrade the defense exponentially I would consider that trade.

Furthermore knowing that Welker is playing on a one year deal and is likely to be looking at the franchise tag or free agency next season as well, why not get the maximum value for him that will help the team win this year?

Has ANYONE thought that MAYBE they wanted to keep him under 4 catches so he could break TBrowns all-time Pats reception record AT HOME. Not in Tennessee.

We were all shocked when they got rid of all three of Gaffney, Branch, and Stallworth. Now we want ot get rid of Welker too?

I understand that this is a serious post, but if we ever did trade Welker I'm sure the situation woudl come up VERY quickly where we would be missing him.

yes...brandon lyold was targeted 8 times ..THREE times more than welker...lets trade him

No he can't. CBA rules forbid it. If he was traded the new team would have the same rights the Pats had. The right to tag him at the end of the season and then negotiate.

This is the biggest hurdle to trading him, the recieving team is getting a player that will be a FA at the end of the season with no way of extending beforehand.

If we trade Welker who will work the slot if Edelman goes down?:D

Ignoring thread in 3 2 1...

Not again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO, Welker will have a "fair" season this year. Considering that he is used to having around 100 receptions per season as a Patriot, if he only had about 50-60, it would be classified as fair to good, but no better.

That being said, 50-60 receptions would be a much better stat for other teams.

With the continued improved play by Gronk and Hernandez, as well as Edelman filling in nicely, there is a very good chance that a Welker trade might just happen next season.

Of course, much would depend on what the Pats get in return.

That, however, is a long way off and not worth thinking about. We have a 2012 season in progress now.
