SS (3) Steve Gregory, James Ihedigbo, Nate Ebner
FS (2) Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson
ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

Total players: 53

I was stuck on Sergio Brown versus James Ihedigbo. Ihedigbo is a better player, but Brown is a better ST which at the #5 safety spot that's where most of your contributions will be. I ended up taking Ihedigbo since we may need him to play again if the injury bug hits.

If Waters comes back I expect Koppen to be cut

We keep Bolden over the FB because Bolden could be used as a FB just like BJGE was his first couple years

Koutouvides makes it over White. Sucks for White being hurt Koutouvides was able to step up

I picked Cole and Moore over Dennard due to their special teams contributions and already having experience in the league. Dennard really needs to red-shirt this year to mature and work out his legal issues. Ideally that would have been on IR, but this time it will be on the PS. I could see a scenario where BB thinks he has something special in Dennard and hides him on the 53-man roster. That would make for a tough cut of Cole.

To the PS: Jeremy Ebert, Kerry Taylor, Alex Silvestro, Matt Kopa, Marcus Forston, Jeff Tarpinian, Malcolm Williams, Alfonzo Dennard

I'll start with a few assumptions.

1. The players who were healthy enough to travel but didn't play a snap are all locks. Rodak has a list, it's 20 players all of whom seem like reasonable choices to have earned their spots.

2. Brian Waters will magically reappear in the next couple of days, in game shape.

3. This initial cut to 53 is about protecting talent, first and foremost. The bottom end of the roster will be continually adjusted in response to injuries, etc. But for this cut, as long as I can comfortably select a balanced gameday 45, I'll usually lean toward keeping superior talent and potential over creating an ideal positional balance.

Here's my resulting 52:

QB (3) Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer
RB (4) Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley, Jeff Demps
WR (6) Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Matthew Slater, Julian Edelman, Jeremy Ebert
TE (4) Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, Visanthe Shiancoe
C (2) Dan Koppen, Ryan Wendell
G (5) Logan Mankins, Brian Waters, Dan Connolly, Donald Thomas, Nick McDonald
T (3) Sebastian Vollmer, Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon
DE (4) Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Jake Bequette
DT (4) Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Ron Brace, Brandon Deaderick
LB(5) Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Donta Hightower, Bobby Carpenter, Jeff Tarpinian
CB (5) Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Ras-I Dowling, Marquice Cole, Alfonzo Dennard
SS (2) Patrick Chung, Nate Ebner
FS (2) Steve Gregory, Tavon Wilson
ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Zoltan Mesko, Danny Aiken

The 53rd spot depends on the injury status of players like Chung and Spikes. Candidates include Ihedigbo, Francis, Koutouvides and Bolden.

All the rosters posted look good to me. It seems like there are going to be a few tough cuts.

We agree on 50 positions, about the same as a month ago.

For us, the bubble seems to include the players below. The first two are on your 53. The next three are on mine. The last three are not on either of our lists.

COMPETING FOR THE BOTTOM THREE ROSTER SPOTS
Ebert
Shiancoe
Bolden
Scott
Ihedigbo
Francis
Koutouvides
Moore

It would not be surprising to see the Game 2 roster include 1-3 players from other teams.

The bottom 6 or so guy are all interchangeable. Koppen sticks around for another year if Waters hangs em up.

- Sterling Moore is a lock IMO, despite the groans of some here.
- I think Ron Brace has become overrated here (for a change). Lacks balance, athleticism, and instincts. Only reason he makes it is because of Fanene's cut. I think this is his final year as a Patriot.

I was reading along until these two points, where you completely lost me. Brace has looked excellent and Moore (whom I've generally supported) has been garbage.

Looks good. I would get rid of an OL and add a LB, but for the initial cutdown with the OL injuries we have, it may be good to keep 10 to start then cut one later.

My defensive roster would look exactly the same as yours. On offense, I don't know if it's worth keeping all three QBs, since neither Hoyer nor Mallett have looked particularly great. I might just keep Brady and Mallett and pray for Brady's health.

I'm also not sure about Koppen. He hasn't looked particularly good and the only way I'd see him sticking around is if Waters doesn't return.

Well my guess at the final 53 not sure of injuries the Niko which would impact sport:

QB (2) Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett
RB (5) Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Brandon Bolden, Jeff Demps
WR (5) Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Julian Edelman, Matthew Slater
TE (4) Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, Visanthe Shiancoe

SS (2) Steve Gregory, Nate Ebner
FS (2) Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson
ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

QB (3) Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer
RB/FB (5) Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Eric Kettani, Jeff Demps
WR (5) Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Julian Edelman, Matthew Slater
TE (3) Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells
C (2) Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell
G (4) Logan Mankins, Brian Waters, Donald Thomas, Nick McDonald
T (3) Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon
DE (4) Chandler Jones, Jake Bequette, Trevor Scott, Justin Francis
DT (4) Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Ron Brace, Brandon Deaderick
ILB(4) Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Donta Hightower, Niko Koutouvides
OLB(3) Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Bobby Carpenter
CB (6) Devin McCourty, Ras-I Dowling, Kyle Arrington, Marquice Cole, Alfonzo Dennard, Sterling Moore
SS (2) Steve Gregory, Nate Ebner
FS (2) Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson
ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

Some tough cuts, some easy ones, and others I would make if a decent vet were signed:

QB (3) - Brady, Hoyer & Mallett
Neither Hoyer nor Mallett have been good enough to justify keeping only 2 QBs.
RB (5) - Woody, Ridley, Vereen, Bolden & Demps
I'd try to sneak Bolden to the PS if a viable FB/RB were acquired, because Kettani ain't it.
TE (3) - Gronk, Hernandez & Fells
Shiancoe could be a post-Week 1 signing.
WR (4) - Welker, Lloyd, Branch & Edelman
I really, really hope that Jabbah is a post-Week 1 signing.
OL (9) - starters: Solder, Mankins, Connolly, Waters & Vollmer
backups: Koppen, Cannon, McDonald & Thomas
If a viable Swing Tackle can be acquired, then Koppen can be dropped;
if there's neither a Swing Tackle nor Waters in the future, then Wendell can stay.

DT (4) - Wilfork, Love, Brace & Deaderick
The odd front is officially ovah, because neither of these 4 are 3-4 DEs.
DE (5) - Ninko, Jones, Scott, Cunningham & Bequette
Andre Carter's a post-Week 1 possibility; you can never, evah have enough Pass-Rushers.
LB (5) - Mayo, Hightower, Spikes, Carpenter, Tarpinian
Mark Herzlich would've looked really good here. Bill needs to scour the waiver wire,
because Tarp, Niko, White & Rivera all suck. I'd rather have Guyton than any of 'em.
CB (6) - McCourty, Arrington, Dowling, Moore, Cole & Dennard
As it is with Pass-Rushers, you can never have enough CBs.
S (4) - Chung, Gregory, Wilson, Ebner
I'd try to sneak either Moore or Dennard to the PS if a viable SS/FS were acquired,
because neither Sergio, Diggy or Mal Williams can play a lick of defense.

Specialists (4) - Ghost, the Zoltan, Aiken & Slater
Stay by the phone, Lonie.

That leaves one spot open, either for a vet signing/re-signing, or for one of the following:
Ebert, Shiancoe, Silvestro, JWarren, Wendell, Francis, Lavarias or Martin.

What about IRing Chung in 5 days? I was a big fan early but he can't stay on the field.

There are more places to put players than on the 53 man roster, practice squad, and cut.

For example, maybe waters stays on the DNR list until week 2 or 3. We can probably beat tenessee without him.

And Belichick is notorious for putting people in IR especially if they are young and developmental. I wouldnt be surprised at all to see a couple youngsters sent to IR as a red shirt type of year.

I was reading along until these two points, where you completely lost me. Brace has looked excellent and Moore (whom I've generally supported) has been garbage.

I stand by what I wrote. I have watched both closely, while using the DVR to go back and watch their play again.

I think Brace has looked the best he has since being drafted, but does lack balance. He is too often pushed off his position, and either on the ground, or to one knee, although less than previous seasons. He is not athletic, and never has been (like a Wilfork). And he has several plays where he is completely unaware of whether it is a run or pass play. I believe BB wants a player like him to maintain his gap discipline, and he is not natural at it. I predict he makes it this year, but won't be long for this team.

I see Moore as a lock, despite your "garbage" claim. BB will not keep him on the roster if you are accurate. I think Moore is instinctive, and still is playing the ball after a receiver makes the catch. Remember his forced fumble on Cruz (for naught) in the Super Bowl? He has got a good skill-set, proven to me last year. Camp reports have said he has done well. None of the corners have particularly shined in the preseason games. It is what it is.

I just disagree with you on the hyperbolic terms "excellent" and "garbage." You disagree with my choice of terms "overrated" and "lock."

And Dennard has a lot of support here for a roster spot, but his game last night was not impressive to me, despite the FF. I'd like him to stick (over say Ihedigbo), but predict he doesn't.

That's not what I said. I have no idea if Moore will make the roster or not. If it were up to me, I'd keep Cole (analogous cover skills, at the very least, and ST edge) and Dennard (developmental corner to groom as Arrington's heir apparent).

I do think declaring a marginal CB4/5 as a "lock" is silly.

Here's my shot at it. I'll be happy if I get 45 right! :)

Well, if Brace is "excellent," he should probably be starting. If Moore is "garbage" he won't make the team. That's all I'm saying. Reiss kept him off (for Dennard - ok - and Sergio Brown, oy vey). Rodak and Yates have him on. We'll see soon enough.
