I'd love to have a Safety w/ a little more beef to backup both spots. Chung is too fragile,
and Ebner & Wilson are too inexperienced. Diggy, however, is not that player. He put on
another clinic of missing open-field tackles last night. He, Sergio & Mal Williams should not
- must not - be members of this team by Saturday. It's bad enough that Slater will be here.
.
Special Teams contributions make up about 15% of an average team's win value (Football Outsiders estimate). If we assume that roster spots are roughly distributed to aggregate unit value, that would mean most teams would have seven or eight guys whose primary/overwhelming contributions are on special teams. The first three are easy (Kicker, Punter, Snapper), and then four or five gunners/jammers/return specialists....
And given that Slater has proven that he is a very good to elite ST-er, and a plausible #7 safety and #7 wide receiver, it makes sense that he has a roster spot.
But again what the hell does Belicheck know for he extended Slater at non-vet min money and a signing bonus, drafted him, and keeps him on the roster when we could all trust in your wonderful judgement.
