Patriots sign former Colts RB Joseph Addai

I see this as a sign of confidence in the young guys. Addai isn't here to be the starter.

I would actually be somewhat surprised if he was on the roster come opening day.

I can't really see a scenario where Faulk is still a Pat this season. He did not have a big impact last year and is getting old and slow.

How's that different from Addai, though?

I'm not a particular fan of Addai's running style so I'm not in favor of this move. Either way, good luck to him.

Faulk > Addai in my book.

This is a 'meh' signing.

I love this pick. We need a leader to act as 'player-coach' for our young RBs. Love it!!!! :rocker::rocker:

Pluse we'll get some good mileage out of him. Guaranteed.

Until we see more from Vereen, I'm fine with this signing, but hopefully this is just insurance.

Maybe 2004 Faulk. Addai is one of the best blocking backs in the league and he's a consistent pass catcher too. This is a 'meh' signing in the sense that he won't be starting and won't dramatically improve our running game, but he brings to the table some skills our RB corps lack.

Kevin Faulk can't be pleased.

Does this mean the base case is 5 roster spots for RB + FB?

I donno... I love Faulk but you gotta hope that younger players can surpass his current skill set.

Faulk is most valuable as a shadow roster player who will stay and shape to provide depth that one hopes is never needed.

AGreed.

By the way, Bedard did some, you know, reporting, and confirmed this.

huh?

Yeah, any signing in the off season is good. Either the guy is great or doesn't make the team.

That said, though, huh?

At this point it is unconfirmed.

Addai....really? :bricks:

Here's my optimistic reading of the tea leaves:

What Ridley, Woodhead, Vereen, Bolden and Addai ALL have in common is that they're equally competent on passing and running plays. IMO the best way to upgrade the Pats' ground game is with RBs versatile enough to make running plays utterly unpredictable.

Good signing. Should have drafted him over Maroney back in 06.

Men, if there is any "Meh" signing, this one takes the cake.

Why in the world do so many people think Faulk has anything left in the tank? He was toast last year and at his age isn't going to be getting better.

We almost have to keep 1 fewer defender with all the competition at the offensive skill positions.

I'm having a hard time making my 53-man work, with all these quality additions.

I've decided the best outcome for the team is trading Hoyer and Edelman for whatever we can get.

Then, we can maybe make something work...

QB (2) Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett
RB (4) Joseph Addai, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead
WR (6) Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney, Deion Branch, Jeremy Ebert, Matthew Slater
TE (3) Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells
C (3) Dan Koppen, Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell
G (3) Logan Mankins, Brian Waters, Robert Gallery
T (3) Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon

DE (4) Jonathan Fanene, Trevor Scott, Chandler Jones, Jake Bequette
DT (5) Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Brandon Deaderick, Gerard Warren, Ron Brace
ILB(4) Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, Dane Fletcher, Tracy White
OLB(4) Rob Ninkovich, Donta Hightower, Bobby Carpenter, Jermaine Cunningham
CB (4) Devin McCourty, Ras-I Dowling, Kyle Arrington, Alfonzo Dennard
SS (3) Patrick Chung, Steve Gregory, Nate Ebner
FS (2) Tavon Wilson, Sterling Moore

ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

And just to make it a tighter squeeze it's hard to imagine none of the FBs making the roster.

Competition in training camp will be fierce.

addai was always underrated because of the offense he was in
