Patriots backup QB displays new polish

Hoyer's the perfect backup right now, but Mallett is the kind of guy you groom for the franchise's future. I can only imagine what it's like watching his fellow draft classmates like Gabbert and Locker, who are far worse than him, stink it up as starters while he sits in complete anonymity. Being patient, working hard, and doing everything to position yourself for your best opportunity either in NE or elsewhere is going to make him a better pro.

Jake Locker isn't a starter and the games he did play, he did pretty well:

TD–INT 4–0
Passing Yards 542
QB rating 99.4

+ 1 rushing TD

The one thing I don't get about you is the overweaning need to inject a Gisele reference into every Brady discussion... Because you otherwise seem like a pretty savvy and well adjusted fan...

I agree. I think he's jealous. He thought he had Tom Brady all to himself and was shocked when Tom fell for a a six-foot, leggy blonde supermodel. Ian ought to send PatsWickedPissah a copy of The Serenity Prayer and a worry stone he can rub when the frustration gets really bad.

Ryan Mallett might be available and if he acts now, PatsWickedPissah might be able to fend off any future supermodels who might come along when Mallett takes over the starting job in a year or two.

overweaning? that's quite a Freudian slip and fall off a 1000 foot cliff....the idea that PWP may want to affix his lips to a certain part of Gisele's anatomy and "inject" a point of reference coincides with the fantasies of a large percentage of well adjusted Patriot fans..unless you are some kind of celibate monk....hmmmm...MonkLewisrocks...poor Abbey Normal.

huh?

worry about keeping your own nose clean.......he's been a model citizen since he's been here.......

truthfully, only one backup has starter potential......it ain't hoyer

I can remember a lot of people saying that Cassel didn't have "starter potential" either and were calling for him to be cut in TC. The Pats didn't cut him and he ended up becoming a very good starter for the Pats and netted them a 2nd and $18 million in cap relief for it..

Pick yes, cap relief no. They only had the hit because they had t tag him in order to get anything more than a comp 3 in 2010.

so...........hoyer is unconditionally connected to cassell?

like I said.....talk to me when it actually happens

I think PWP's problem is that he's smart and hilarious.

Actually those are two problems.

He's simply noting the undeniable truth that Brady's Sugar Momma is bringing home the big bucks so that he can play games in his spare time.

TB12 should keep it real and come out wearing Bundchen on the back of his jersey. Still TB baby.

Wait! Mallett is Polish!? Who knew?

its not even worth acknowledging

Does anyone else thinks he looks ill in those 2 pictures? He just looks far too skinny for his size.

Yeah, I just hope he gets off the crutches soon. ;)

Way to nail the not so obvious comment! ;)

He's NU Polish.. which isn't actually Polish. Kind of like NU Metal isn't actually metal.

You mean he's GNU Polish.:) (That is open source Polish from way back in the day when anything with GNU affixed to it was freeware. I said it was a joke, I did not say it was a good one.)

Back the point of his game though: If he learns how to control that cannon of an arm he's got and learns when to use it and when make a touch pass, he will be a very, very good QB. From what I've seen of him in college and pre-season when he panics or can't see an open receiver he tends to "do a Favre" and just back his arm.

Rocket-armed QB's are so often like that though.

"Gun it!"

INTERCEPTED!

I thought he'd be a great fit in Cleveland. Before you say WCO, Brandon Weeden isn't exactly nimble. Mallett had a year under his belt learning an NFL system. Is 6 years younger. And, played better in college. He's a much better prospect than Weeden. They used a 1st round pick on him. I think BB would have taken their 2nd rounder for Mallett if it was offered.

I tend to doubt it.

Mallett has been a model Patriot citizen, so far. He is allaying the unsubstantiated rumors about him. There has never been a question about his rare and elite athletic abilities, save perhaps being slow a foot, in the pocket. His game like Brady's, will never be a as a scrambler or runner.

Like Brady he needs the ability to shuffle and sidestep in the pocket, and he displayed that at Arkansas to a fair degree. His off season, seems to be doing exactly what the Coaches would have wanted him to do, physically. Get fit and get faster.

We shall see what he has learned between his ears, as that is where the art of quarterbacking is mostly played. He had a good Wonderlic and Belichick quizzed this Coach's son about understanding football; and he passed with flying colors, before he was drafted.

But I seem to recall that he won a couple of Black Shirts for doing a yeomen's job on the Scout team, last season. I am sure the Coaches noted that.

BB felt comfortable with Hoyer as BU QB and now he stole Mallett in the draft.

Nice position to be in, and if BB liked Hoyer enough to keep him as the only backup with no vet behind him, I think he'll do just fine until Mallett can prove himself.

One comparison I thought was fitting for Ryan coming out of college was Jay Cutler. Favre works, too, since it's for the same reasons. But yes, even in college Ryan had a tendency to try and rifle a bal into thick coverage when a receiver wasn't open. He did get away with quite a bit because the pass was too hot for the defender. Hopefully this time of sitting by Brady and watching and learning will help in the decision making department.

I can understand the character concerns coming out, to an extent, although I do feel some of it was way overblown. The criticism I never understood was the knock on his dedication to the game. He may have been the hardest worker on the team while at Arkansas. Petrino raved about how wiling he was to learn. You got a glimpse on how well versed he was in the offense during his Gruden QB camp show last year. I mean he was voted a team captain at Arkansas..TWICE!! The first time came before he ever played a down. His teammates saw something in him during his transfer sit-out year and in the spring and summer practices leading up to the 2010 season to vote him as a team captain.
