Welcome Alfonzo Dennard

I would've said pretend as if we drafted Dennard in the 2nd and Wilson in the 7th, but then people would be complaining how "We just drafted an insane guy who punched a cop." Randy Moss did that one time, didn't he? I think he worked out. ;)

Not to throw cold water on everyone, but an arrest, a fight, and poor performances on big stages are a fairly sizeable collection of red flags. Wouldn't be the first person to turn over a new leaf (and our locker room I think has stabilized to the point of harboring these kinds of personalities), but I don't expect more of him than I do any 7th rounder, I've just lowered the expectations due to character concerns rather than lack of talent.

But some draft experts considered him to have 1st to 2nd round talent. Both fights indicate some immaturity or stupidity, but nothing that can't be overcome with good coaching and a strong clubhouse. The recent poor performances are troubling, but it's a small sample size in comparison to his entire body of work, which apparently had him in the late first round on some mock boards. Personally, I've never gotten so excited about a 7th rounder...

Dennard...good talent at where they go him from what i have been reading

He drove his car into a meter-maid I believe.

I wanted no part of him well before the punching a cop thing. If you can find some footage of Dennard during Senior Week watch it...and try not to cry. :(

Well, at least it only cost us a 7th.

I agree. Hill comes from a triple option offense. He has a lot to learn about a Pro style offense. I wonder if he can take on the double team which he rarely saw in a triple option offense. He has questions about his hands and he didn't catch the ball all that much in college.

Until Hill can show he can adapt to the pros and run routes, I am not worried about him. He is a boom or bust prospect.

Given what we have seen of the WRs, and the offense in general under Rex Ryan, you must question who is actually there that can teach him.

Sometimes players with 1st round talent who actually get taken in the 1st round don't pan out (Vernon Gholston comes to mind). I'm rooting for the kid, I'd love to add a top talent to the CB group, but his issues were enough to drop him 5 or 6 rounds. That's not Hernandez dropping a round or two for pot, it's a bit more troublesome than that. I'm just saying, expectations shouldn't be raised for him just because he has first round talent.

From the video, Alshon started it with the first punch...

Based on that video I think we can conclude that dennard is a ******* animal and woulda ripped alshon a new one if that was allowed to continue. Welcome to the pats buddy

Although Dennard got beaten once deep in that game, that was a titanic struggle between the two. Really enjoyed it live. I want that feistiness on the Pats.

However, as an ex-cop, less of that please Alfonso.

Theres a reason BB can take afford to take a player with character concerns. Denard will be surrounded by Wilfork, Mayo, McCourty, Chung... All high character guys. There is a lot of good leadership on our team. Plus Foxboro is a docile place compared to say, Miami or New York where theres lots of distractions and opportunities for players to get in trouble. Denard will either submit to the Patriot Way, or he'll find himself unemployed in a few months.

If he has any sort of intelligence, he'll take this as a blessing to even be drafted and appreciate the chance to play for a Superbowl contender. It could be a huge steal for the Pats.

The problems arise when these guys with character issues go to teams or environments that allow them to continue their immature bullish*t.

Kind of reminds me of the Baltimore pick last year (db). Character issues and worked out for the Ravens. Lot of people here wanted to sign him as a FA.

Some swagger and nastiness in the backfield. We've been trying to recapture that since Rodney retired. Call me old fashioned but I like angry ants (well, those who can control it).

The big problem, is that if he is found guilty, he may be going to jail.

Oh dear god, 5'10? He is going to get abused by the 6'4 Stephen Hill

He shut down 3 larger receivers:

Blackmon 6'1" 207
McNutt 6' 3' 226
Cunningham 6'1" 211

That's very Ty Law-like, who was admittingly tougher vs the larger folks.

Dennard is half crazy.

He's faced some good talent too: Blackmon, Weeden, Gabbert

Yeah, he and Jeffery got tossed out of the bowl game. Tough kid, but have to play smarter in your bowl game -- the team needs ya.

Also, for those concerned about draft projections and rankings -- here you go:

Three Top 100 lists - Alfonzo Dennard:

Brian Billick - #72
Mike Mayock - #78
Nolan Nawrocki - #85

doubtful it's for a full season. he may miss a bit of training camp though. hopefull they just give him probation.

One thing you can guarantee is he won't be punching anybody that lands him into trouble off the field anymore as long as he's a patriot. I don't remember many troubled athletes coming to the pats and not buying into the patriot way once they see what a calm and pleasant environment it is to work in.

BTW guys Lardarius Webb is 5'10 just like Dennard. And I think a LOT of us would love to have Webb on the roster. Dennard is a talented kid no doubt. I think his possible character concerns are what dropped him. But this late in the draft, it's a no-brainer to take a roll on the high ceiling talent.

Also if Dowling is healthy, I see him as the corner that gets matched up against Hill and any other tall wideouts we see next year.

I hope he turns out to be better than his former teammate Prince Amakumuru, who was overhyped and did not impress last year.
