He says we'll likely be trading down at one of our firsts. That seems almost expected my many.

#27 Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse
#31 Harrison Smith FS Notre Dame
#48 Courtney Upshaw DE/OLB Alabama
#62 Brandon Brooks OG Miami of Ohio

NFL.com news: Two-round mock draft: No quarterbacks taken in second round

I'd be ecstatic if we could get Upshaw that late. I think Jones is more of a high second-rounder and would prefer Andre Branch. But this'll do, pig, this'll do.

I'm kind of astounded by the lack of CBs taken in the second round.

He makes a good point of the Jets looking to trade up to get SS Barron.

BTW, he has Irvin taken at #58. I can't believe that Clemson TE who is slow would be taken that high, though.

Wow Upshaw is in a real free fall. I think he'll end up as a pretty good player (can't teach motor and instincts.) Wonder if the rest of the NFL is as soured on him.

Can't see a guard in the second, although not entirely out of the realm of possibility given our needs there for next year. Still I think we'd get a developmental OL guy we can stick on the practice squad (4th or later) and get DL or CB there.

I don't know what to think of C. Jones. Seems a stretch BB takes a player like that with his first round pick (unless someone unexpectedly drops I can't figure out who we'll be taking there.)

I checked out OG Brandon Brooks of the MAC Miami, and he's like this year's Seabass Vollmer.

No Combine invite but his size and athleticism caused me to use profanity. And I'm heading to shul shortly.

6'5" 346, consistent 4.99 40, superb strength at 36 reps at 225, and three-cone is excellent at 7.37. That's beyond impressive.

My problem with a OL in the first four rounds is, could they even make the team? :D We are loaded there.

If BB keeps 9 OL on the 53:

T: Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer, Nate Solder
G: Logan Mankins, Brian Waters, Robert Gallery, Marcus Cannon
C: Dan Koppen, Dan Connolly

With prospects like Nick Mcdonald and Donald Thomas competing for spots.

Which one of those 9 would you cut for the rookie? Maybe Gallery, but he is a solid guard who got a decent contract so I doubt he gets cut.

Unless Light or Waters retires a rookie can't even make the team, let alone be drafted.

agreed. Id be a bit upset if BB drafted a lineman early, with all the defensive needs the Pats have. A guy I like is Tom Compton from South Dakota. Played LT in college but projects as a RT in the pros and can play inside as well. Lunchpail type player who excels in run blocking. Probably can get in the 5th or 6th round. Was two time captain in college.

from CBS:

Positives: Looks the part with a naturally large frame with a relatively trim middle. Best asset is his strength and disposition as a run blocker. Gives a strong initial punch. Plays with good leverage, bends at the knees and sees what he's hitting, showing the ability to roll his hips into the defender and drive him off the line of scrimmage. Physical and nasty. Has long arms (33 7/8 inches) and strong hands in pass protection. At least adequate lateral agility to mirror. Good practice week at East-West Shrine Game. Two-time captain.

Negatives: Will struggle protecting the edge against NFL-caliber speed. Dominated FCS with size and strength and has average overall lateral agility. Oversteps on his kick-side, allowing too wide of a lane back inside for pass rushers able to re-direct quickly. Has more power than quickness, struggles to re-direct and hit the moving target. Lunges too often, leading to flailing missed blocks.

Upshaw out of the first round is pretty radical. Lombardi the other night speculated on Baron to the Jags at #7 and I almost spit my drink out but then thought well they did take Tyson Alualu @ #10 two years back so even though I'd call that awful value who knows.

I don't love this mock for us and Casserly doesn't have a great track record with Patriots predictions but you have to give the guy credit for selecting Mario Williams, correctly, when the entire planet thought Reggie Bush.

Given the way his draft breaks I'd rather see.

27 McCellan
31 Hightower
48 Upshaw
62 Boykin/Winn/Martin

That would be an exciting draft. Little heavy on the linebackers though

I'm not a fan of this mock draft at all.

A lot of LB's. My thoughts:

27. McClellin

31. Still/ Reyes. I like both of these two as DTs in a 4/3, DEs in a 3/4. Reyes, I would prefer for upside, but I wouldn't argue the pick of Still. I just think this position is very hard to fill where we normally draft, and this year we have 2 strong candidates. I could see a trade back 5-8 slots, or so, for a team looking for a RB. That would still allow us to pick up one of the two, in real life, as well as this mock...

48. Upshaw. As much as I don't see us doubling up on OLBs, he is the clear upside pick here. Most of the other value picks at this spot are not positions of need for the Pats. Trade for high 3rd, 3rd next year?

62. Best available DB the way this draft unfolds. Depending on the way the actual draft plays out, I might also look for names like Wolfe/ Chapman as I don't see them available at our pick in the late 3rd.

Charley Casserly's picks for the New England Patriots are a joke.

I'd rather go the following route:

#27 Dont'a Hightower
#31 Kendall Reyes
#48 Ronnell Lewis or Bruce Irvin
#62 Alfonzo Dennard or Jamell Fleming

Now that is a VERY nice draft. Nice to see someone else recognising Ronnell Lewis in these parts, thought I was the only one.

I just posted my final mock in the Ye Official 2012 Mock Draft Thread. If McClellin is not available at #48 (most likely won't be), I'll take Ronnell Lewis or Bruce Irvin as a consolation prize.

Have you ever seen Tyson Alualu play? The Jags picking him looks better and better each and every game. Alualu is a prime example of NFL teams and scouts knowing way more than Mock Drafters.

Casserly is a joke. If the board actually fell in this demented way...

#27 McClellin
#31 Hightower
#48 Fleener. I don't give an F how many TE we already have. He won't last that long anyway.
#62 Crick via a slight trade up.

We're always looking for LB's, take the damn linebackers!

Upgrades the front 7, gives me one of my binkies in Fleener, and we can go DB in the 3rd.

Suck it Casserly!

They still could have traded down and landed him 20 picks later and although a decent player I still don't know that I'd consider him living up to a top ten talent.

Casserly has to have his toupee on backwards if he thinks that Courtney Upshaw will last into the second round...

I don't know. After watching a lot of Upshaw video, I see a guy who relies heavily on his bull rush. He doesn't have an advanced reportoire of pass rushing moves, and gets blocked fairly easily. He won't be able to take advantage of his physical ability as much in the pros.

Casserly isn't too far off in my opinion.

He's started every game of his two years in the league and is arguably the single bright spot on that Jaguars defensive line. Idk about you but there's nothing better than an immediate starter out of a top 10 pick, especially at DT/DE.

The remaining question I have for Casserly is this: Why the terrible toupee Charlie? We are all guys here; do don't care it you have a shiny dome--it would look better than that rug. Combine the rug with his truly dreadful voice (New Jersey accent?) and he is hard to watch/listen to.

The draft is not for just 2012 though. There is a good chance Light or Waters retires, most likely Light IMO. They like Cannon as a RT so far, so swing OT is covered if that happens.

The 2013 OL looks like this currently and some younger guys are needed.

T: Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon
G: Logan Mankins
C: Dan Koppen, Dan Connolly
