It sucks when them overrating a player sets the price for everyone else, too.

In this case, though, it's late in the free agency season, and the cap staying relatively flat again next year will keep CB salaries in check. Now, if they'll just pay Flacco as if he's the best QB in the NFL....

It's always good when the tougher competition overrates and overpays players, so I'm happy with this signing.

I think the guaranteed money was a bit much, but when you look at the totality of the pact (6 years), does 8.3 million average per seem all that much for a guy of his caliber with a 1st round tender?

I think it is more than he's worth, but then again it may not be too much more. If he had gotten 7 million average per, there'd have been many saying that it was a steal.

I suppose they felt he would command somewhere in the 8 million+ range, so they decided to overpay for him a bit.

Just watched a piece on Total Access about Ed Reed not happy that he is getting 7M this year when younger guys are getting PAID. I think BB would be chopping at the bit if Reed was ever available. I am not saying that the Ravens would let Reed go but BB loves this guy and makes this D better day one.

And along those lines, I think a little under $8M is the limit for any incoming Patriot that hasn't been a Pro Bowler multiple times or something like that. That's what Wilfork got and just under what Mankins got. Belichick's not going to do to them what the Ravens just did to Reed.

Didnt I just read that the Ravens only had 1.7 mill of cap space?

His tender was already taking some of that cap space, a little restructure here and there, and voila.

They already had him tendered at 2.74 right? That's almost 3 million right there already accounted for.

With a 10 million signing bonus and a somewhat cap friendly hit of between 4 and 5 million this year, it could be done. There's the difference right there--only a million or possibly two.

There's also the possibility of the projections of them being 1.7 under the cap being off by a million or so, whereas they'd still be able to fit his cap hit this yr in even if it were almost 6 million.

In the coming days or weeks we'll hear of a restructure or long term signing or 2. It took a few weeks for Brady's restructure to become public if I remember correctly.

I'm sure that you're right. There's the chance that the contract will not even go in front of the league/paperwork until early to mid next week too, so that will buy them another 1/2 a week or more.

Regardless, they can actually afford it right now, as long as this yr's cap hit for Webb is not more than about 5 1/2 million--which is certainly realistic.

Webb is a terrific player, I think the Ravens and their fans will be happy with the money they've paid.

Umm... who was this guy before last season?

Wow. HUGE money. I hate the Ravens and I hate the city of Baltimore, so hopefully last year was a fluke and they totally overspent.

As did McCourty's in 2010.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

If he has as good of a season as 2011, this is an excellent signing for them. If he regresses, then the money is spread out over a long period of time and isn't as much of a financial back breaker as it looks like on the surface.
