If he's available for a 2nd round pick that has to be considered and attractive offer, that is unless you are certain Ridley and Vereen are capable of becoming an every down dual threat feature back.

I'd give them the 2nd in a heartbeat. Say no to Stewart because of Ridley or Vereen - that's laughable.

Re: Johnathan Stewart could be available for a 2nd round pick.

Stewart will make - $1,311,250 in 2012.
He is then a RFA in 2013.
Give him a 1st round tender 2.74 Million (2012 number).
We could have him for at least 2 years

If he's traded, he's going to want a new contract to go along with it. It's what happens when guys who have exceeded the value of their contract are traded.

So would I but it's difficult projecting the abilities of Ridley and Vereen as both looked dynamic at times.

I can understand your comment when it relates to Ridley, ignoring his propensity for fumbling the ball, but Vereen? We barely saw anything of him except in garbage time.

I'm going to assume you're being contrary for the sake of it. Chris Johnson is not a top 3 RB in the NFL by any measure. He hasn't even been a league average RB the last two years. 2009 was a long time ago in football years.

Chris Johnson was #4 in the NFL in rushing yards in 2010.

And you can glean something about his ability as a runner, even in garbage time.

I agree Ridley looked promising last year before his fumbling and subsequent benching. As far as Vereen, I'm not sure what people saw in him.

I'd wager to say not enough to decide one way or the other, considering it's garbage time.

Having said that, I was a bit surprised he didn't get more playing time throughout the season, eventhough he was hampered by a hamstring injury if I recall correctly early in the season.

They don't have to give him a new contract.
If he wants his year of service time, he is going to have to play !
He currently has a contract, and if he wants to increase his earning power,
a superbowl victory is a step in the right direction.

Re: Johnathan Stewart could be available for a 2nd round pick.

I would love the 2004 rushing attack back if we had the backs capable of doing it. 5200 passing yards is nice but I'd rather hold onto the ball for 35 minutes a game to give the defense a break and protect Brady.

If the Pats had the 2004 rushing attack a couple months ago, the opposing D would have to respect it & there would be four Lombardi's in Foxboro now.

Nothing dispositive, but enough to see he's a dynamic back, as ausbacher said.

He's had one major concussion in 2010 and possibly another. Too risky but a good player.

I think a good comparison for a possible trade would be when the Bills traded Marshawn Lynch to the Seahawks in 2010. Lynch was traded for a 4th round pick in 2011 and a 2012 conditional, which turned out to a 5th rounder. Here are the players stats at the time of the trade:

Lynch: 12th pick in 2007 draft. 61 games, 51 starts, 889 carries, 3502 yards, 3.94 ypc, 23 tds, 116 receptions, 815 yards, 7.02 ypr, 12 fumbles. 1 probowl and 2-1000 yard seasons.

Stewart: 13th pick in 2008 draft. 62 games, 13 starts, 725 carries, 3500 yards, 4.8 ypc, 26 tds, 81 receptionsm, 702 yards, 8.7 ypr, 10 fumbles, 0 probowls and 1-1000 yard seasons.

Clearly Stewart has the better overall stats. His obvious problem was that he shared carries with DeAngelo Williams and was never a full time starter. But if Lynch was valued at a 4th and 5th, Id offer a 3rd (95th this season) and a conditional 4th rounder (turns into a 3rd with a 1000 yard 2012 season) for him. If they are insistant on a 2nd rounder then Id see if they would throw in a 4th or 5th rounder along with Stewart. So that would be the 63rd pick overall for Stewart and the 136th (5th round, 8th pick) at worst. I think either deal is worth it and makes the Pats a better team.

The more I think about it, I would love to get Stewart. Wouldn't mind if Ridley got dealt for a future draft pick and roll with a Stewart/Vereen/Woodhead backfield.

....seriously? That's like buying a stock and then waiting for it to go down so you can sell it.

I agree. No way Id trade Ridley. He's locked up for what, 3 more years at least? Is a low cap number and at worst is a capable back up.

I think J-Stew is a perfect fit for the Patriots. Hes explosive, quick and strong. At 225-230, he is a bowling ball who breaks tackles and can catch out of the backfield. I would definitely give up 1 of our 2nd round picks for him considering we have 2 of them. We have some good young RBs but Stewart is a difference maker and is ONLY 24 years old.

I remember CJ getting 1,300 yards in 2010. that's average? I know he was very disappointing last year, but I think he'll make a comeback

I would trade a second rounder for this kid in a heartbeat. His injury history (ankle) scares me a little, but he would give us the kind of running threat out of the backfield that we havent had since CD in 04.

It'd be even sweeter if we can trade out and pick up an extra second rounder to use for him.

Unfortunately, I dont see Bill paying for elite talent at that position.
