Sorry, but I have to call BS on this. Taking 2 RBs made PLENTY of sense at the time. It's amazing how people so quickly forget what the situation of the Pats RBs was at the time of the draft.

I agree the problem was they reached for Ridley and there were better options available.

This just in: Gronk is the best TE in the NFL. Grabbing another TE to fill in as our 3rd All-Pro TE in case one of our All-Stars goes down is not going to happen. Let's move up and grab Andrew Luck, too. Just in case Brady goes down.

I know this is a bit of an exaggeration but you guys just sound ridiculous. You don't build a team on the idea of being afraid of injuries.

Who are we to say we reached for Ridley? It's a bit early to say there were better options available. The only guys taken after Ridley who have done well are Roy Helu Jr (but come on, anyone does good in Shanhan's zone blocking scheme he just needs a RB crazy enough to run in it) and DeMarco Murray. There is also Kendall Hunter but it's a bit early to go nuts about him. Ridley was a fantastic pick where we got him.

Kirkpatrick is tumbling down draft boards due to his stupidity. He is 6'2" or so and tackles and runs well.

If he is available at #27, does BB make that call? You know that BB has more knowledge of all the Alabama players and how they fit into our system than any coach in football.

Would Kirkpatrick and Hightower be a good first round for us?

It would be a dream first round for me. Kirkpatrick is the only player I like more than Barron for that safety role.

They didn't reach for Ridley. As for there being better options, who?

I Like Ridley alot and thing he will be our punishing back and vereen our faulk.

What we really need is another Wille McGinest?

I don't see Kirkpatrick playing outside CB at a high level. He'll make a great slot CB though.

I just cannot take a mock draft all that serious when I see Dennard in the 1st round. He got exposed against top tier talent the last 2 seasons and then got exposed for a week straight down in Mobile that he cannot play off coverage to save his life.

It seems as if we go through this every year with elite CBs. The mocks have them lasting until the Patriots picks but on draft day they are long gone. CBs are commodities and I have to believe that Alfonzo Dennard will be long gone by 27...never mind 31

Except that he wasn't exposed in the actual Senior Bowl since he didn't play. And, there are plenty of teams that look for press coverage corners. Someone will over-draft him.

I personally disagree. Ridley did play in the SEC but he could of been had in the fifth round. I would of preferred Murray out of this group.

Ridley was rated on one board as the 20th running back. Murray, Hulu or Hunter would of been my picks.

He can be over aggressive at times which is his issue. I'd be interested to hear your analysis on him. What I see is a guy who is excellent in press coverage but can be over aggressive at times. He has quick feet which enables him to make up the separation but he maintains contact and uses his hands extremely well in press. He held Big 10 QBs to a season low completion percentage in 2011 which is a decent achievement. So I don't get how he was getting burnt. As said, he has a knack of being over aggressive at times but from what I've seen, when he can't maintain contact and allows separation, he makes it up with quick feet. Some question his recovery speed and straight line speed, but I want to see him run a 40 before I drop him out of the first round.

here are two guys I like for the Patriots...Dennard and Trumaine Johnson. I love the way Johnson plays zone and he could be a better fit given the amount we like to play it...he seems to break on the ball so well. Not as good as Dennard in man (he struggles a little maintaining contact with his hands) and that might be a concern for some if he doesn't run well in the 40 yard dash. Again, I really want to see this guy run as if either of them run faster than expected I think you could see their stock rise considerably. Johnson's height is an advantage at 6'2"

Johnson gets no love for being a small school guy and I struggle to find enough stuff on him to really look at him properly...what I do see however I like. These two guys are ideal for us because I think they can rotate at safety and potentially play outside if required...we need versatile players in the secondary with the hybrid we like to play.

Mayock has Johnson breaking his top 5 right now and he sees a lot more tape than we get to.

A heist. I anticipate Kirkpatrick runs too well at the combine and moves backup to the middle of the round. Teams seem to forget all out character issues if the stop watch is favorable. If Hightower was to run in the 4.6's the same will hold true for him. I imagine he'll run 4.75-78 but imagine if he pulls a 4.6X out of his @ss.

Oh come on. After the 2nd round it's a complete crapshoot in regards to draft boards. Hindsight is 20-20 but come on none of these guys are starters yet (Helu started a couple games and maybe Murray a couple due to injuries).

I'm not an expert on things technical when it comes to CB's but this video was a problem for me concerning Johnson

Trumaine Johnson vs Central Arkansas 2011 - YouTube

Watch when he drops back into coverage. Rather than backpedal, he immediately turns his hips in anticipation of the receiver running downfield. Does anyone know if this normal or preferred practice because to me it looks if he's unable to then react when the receiver stops or cuts inside or out. Maybe I'm over emphasising this problem but it suggests a lot of rawness. Any experts care to help on the technicalities of playing CB?

Let me first clarify, I am looking at Dennard purely from a Patriots defensive scheme perspective. Another team may find his aggressiveness appealing but I just have not seen the Patriots run their scheme that way. It seems the Patriots would much rather keep the ball infront of them rather than go for the big play.
Back to Dennard himself. Living in the midwest, I get to see my fair share of Big10, Big12 football and I here is what I have taken away from Dennard.
Outside the physical attributes is where I think he excels. He seems to have good instincts, is a good tackler, seems to have good speed.

On the other side I don't really see him as a playmaker for the risks that he does like to take. He only has 4 pics in 4 years. He is awkward in his back pedal and is really bad in his transition. He struggles to make the turn and run which takes away from his timed speed that he will show off probably at the combine. Does better in press coverage I agree, but I think the Patriots don't really prefer to play press coverage, and that is why having Dennard in the first for the Patriots just seems wrong.

Except Murray was off the board when they drafted Ridley and therefor wasn't available.

Who cares where Ridley was picked? After a season, he's probably the second best RB from that draft.

I like your logic and can't argue with it. One thing I do like about him is he brings a lot of energy and leadership...I agree the Patriots like to keep it in front of them, but i'd personally like to see them move away from that and would like to see a guy who can press. I personally see Dennard as more of a safety prospect. But hat's why I liek him...I think he could do a job at corner for us if we needed him to.

I will feel very good about the Corner position if Dowling stays healthy and McCourty recovers from his slump...but that's two too many 'ifs' unfortunately :/. I think we should go with one of the two guys I mentioned because if the versatility factor.
