Another great article on our favorite backup DL:

There was a time, not too long ago, when Patriots defensive lineman Mike Wright seriously considered walking away from his dream.

Wright was a junior in college with one season of Division II football on his resume and two full seasons missed due to an NCAA transfer rule and a serious knee injury.

"I almost quit before my senior year in college," Wright recalled. "I kept thinking, ‘Why would this year be any different? I'm probably going to get hurt again and then I'll have to go through all that stuff again.'"

Patriots coaches and fans are glad Wright decided to stick with it.

Yes, we are. :rocker:

Good'un 77! ...

Good post..He's a keeper...out of nowhere..I remember when they signed him I tried to get some info about him and it was hard to find anything at all..a PLAYER!!

Mike Wright is a player ... that tackle to save a TD last month will stay in my mind for a long time. Seems like a player we can have for a long time .

His neck is wider than his head.

That AWOL bum Dryheat44 had him pegged.

He's quickly becomign a fan fav. Defintiely one of my fav's. Keep on adding guys with his heart and the team will be alright. I see Wright getting more and more snaps next year and years to follow.

The guy was awesome last week. Props to Wright.

I'd say he is as good as a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Opinions on that?

Definitely passed Marquise Hill by and had 100x's more heart than Jonathan Sullivan.

Mike Wright is alot like Brady. Brady was drafted in 6th round, Mike was not. Both continually feel a need to prove themselves, much like Howie Long. A player either has heart and work ethic or doesn't.

I'd agree especially after last week's performance. If Wright continually gives performances like he did during the Jags I see this guy a regular starter in the rotation.

I was shocked he made the active roster last year much like randal gay the yr before, but they saw the player in him and his learning curve is fast.

You have to wonder what Marquise Hill's issues are. is he a slow learner or doesn't understand at all.

Richard Vershaun Seymour: 1st round, 6th pick, 2001
Ty'ron Markeith Warren: 1st round, 13th pick, 2003
Vincent Lamar Wilfork: 1st round, 21st pick, 2004

Mike Wright fitting in with essentially zero dropoff: Priceless :D

Next time someone says undrafted free agents are a waste of time, show them Wright's picture.

Patriots struck paydirt with that one - there are some real gems to be had in the UDFA market - just look at Willie Parker in Pittsburgh.

We dont hit it everytime, but the scouting division has to be one of the consistently best in the NFL over the last 5/6 years.

I hope he plays well enough that they can move Seymour to another team for a pick. He's overrated and has some ground to make up with me for stomping on that player's face. Warren, Wright and Wilfork is a nice 3 DL setup. Triple Dubya.

Are you kidding?

Not particularly, no. And I'm not trying to put some edgy opinion out there just to get internet discussion forum attention. Ty Warren is the best defensive lineman on this team and according to Wilfork the consensus best player period. Seymour is a good player but he's regularly gone for a month due to injury and good for a bonehead penalty every other game or so.

I'd really rather see Mike Wright and Jarvis Green platooning in his place and his big contract out the door.

Seymour gets a lot of praise I don't feel he deserves.

And that's why you're sittin here in front of your computer and Belichick is running the show.

high--larious!

What position do you coach on the team that gives credence to your 1787 posts that were all assuredly authorative?

We're all on the outside looking in, but going by what I see I don't think the hype meets reality with Seymour and the face stomping incident really sickened me because for better or worse I buy into all that horse**** about character.

I'm not saying that he's a bad player but if we could get the same production sans the occasional assault and battery or dip**** PF - Roughing the Passer for cheaper I'd be all for it.

Since you say you're serious, and not just w****** for attention, I'll do my best to respond seriously.

OK, that gives you four DL. What happens if one of them goes down with an injury? I'd sooner see the Pats ship out Marquise Hill; they'd be gaining something and essentially losing nothing (since they'd still have a sixth DL in Le Kevin Smith).

And good enough to draw a double-team every other down or so.

More than a little of which comes from none other than Belichick himself; Belichick meets one-on-one with Seymour before every game to discuss the plans for the D.

Short of some team being dumb enough to repeat the Vikings/Herschel Walker fiasco, the odds of this happening are about the same as the Colts winning the Super Bowl.

The face-stomping incident is not the norm for Seymour. You act like this guy is a serial troublemaker. From what I've heard most close to the team think he is a pretty stand up guy. Most people think Brady has pretty great character and his best friend on the team is Seymour, so I don't think he can be that terrible.

And lets not get carried away here. The penalty you are referring to was bad but it's not in the league of the Albert Haynesworth stomp. Even the "nicest" players have had the occasional on the field problem. I remember our golden boy Tom Brady getting flagged for a penalty after he shoved an opposing player to the ground well after the play was over. Football is a very emotional game and these things happen. If there are issues all the time obviously there is a problem, but that doesn't happen for Seymour. I'm not excusing the penalty but it happened because he was cut blocked, which isn't illegal but any defensive lineman will tell you it is their absolutely least favorite thing to have happen because each time it could end your season on career. I think you're taking the situation a little more seriously than it merits.

And I certainly don't think you can blame Seymour for most of the roughing the passer calls against him because everyone knows how BS that penalty is most of the time. The one called against him last week was a joke. Even the talking heads on ESPN thought so.

Belichick has let so many "great" players walk, such as Milloy, Branch, McGuinest, Law, Woody, and Washington, yet he not only gave in to the holdout of Seymour but he gave him an extension that made him one of the highest paid defensive players in the game more than a year before his contract was up. The only other player who has been treated similarly in the Belichick era is Brady, and we all know how important he is to the team. This organization doesn't throw money around to just anyone, and it is not afraid to let really good players go. Clearly Belichick felt that Seymour was a vital part of the defense who had to be signed. Call me crazy, but I trust Belichick.

I love Ty Warren, and he had a great year, but part of his success is from playing on a line with Seymour. Seymour gets so much attention from the other team that it clears it up for the other guys. Teams rarely run to Seymour's side. He is a leader on the defense who can alter an offenses game plan. Belichick views him as the Brady of the defense.

Regardless, Seymour isn't going anywhere. Belichick doesn't sign people to huge contracts only to trade them. If it gets as far them getting a big contract, he wants them for good.
